Children’s Fairyland to host after-hours music festival in Oakland. Here’s the lineup

Oakland’s historic amusement park, Children’s Fairyland, is set to play host to an eclectic after-hours music festival this fall. 

Curated by Spellling, the experimental music project of Bay Area producer Chrystia Cabral, in collaboration with travel website Atlas Obscura, the event promises a blend of avant-garde, experimental and genre-pushing performances.

Dubbed “Through the Looking Glass” and scheduled for Sept. 16, the outdoor event boasts a diverse lineup of talented artists, including the psychedelic jazz ensemble Sun Ra Arkestra, led by 99-year-old Marshall Allen. Joining them is Los Angeles electro-indie-rocker Sasami, alongside the Australian musician and professional whistler Molly Lewis.

The festival will also feature Bay Area improviser and conductor Zachary James Watkins, a Mills College alum; 80-year-old Philadelphia multi-instrumentalist Laraaji; Los Angeles harpist and composer Nailah Hunter; and the Ugandan recording artist AroMa. 

“Join us for a transcendent evening filled with magic and wonder, featuring avant-garde, experimental, and genre-pushing musicians and artists from the Bay Area and beyond,” the festival website says.
