Meshell Ndegeocello will be performing four shows on the West Coast next month: March 3 and 10 at Café Largo in Los Angeles, March 12 at The New Parish in Oakland, and March 13 at the Independent in San Francisco.
For the March 3 date at Largo, Meshell will be performing duets with Chris Bruce and playing songs from throughout her career, including her most recent release, Devil’s Halo.

The March 10, 12 and 13 shows are billed as “Gett off: Meshell Ndegeocello covers Prince”, with Meshell performing songs written by the purple one, including classics such as “Little Red Corvette”, “Lady Cab Driver”, and “Pop Life”. A full band will be accompanying Meshell on all four dates with Chris Bruce on guitar, Deantoni Parks on drums, and Keefus Ciancia on keys.

Thanks to that particular song (written just before coming to New Orleans), this recording became something truly precious. Hermeto dedicated it to the Mississippi River, and also to all the musicians from New Orleans (because he imagined them swimming in this river), and left the score for local musicians to play. Probably it was the only time that Hermeto and his Grupo played this beautiful song, which somewhat reminds me of "Vale Da Rebeira", one of my all-time favorite Hermeto comositions. - Papagaio

JEMS is delighted to present a new master cassette transfer of this oft-rumored soundboard recording of The Jacksons live in Memphis, November 25, 1979.

The concert was part of the long Destiny tour, named for The Jacksons 1978 album of the same name. By this point in the run, Michael had released his breakthrough solo masterpiece Off The Wall, which dropped in August 1979. The success of its first two singles, "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" and "Rock With You," turned Off The Wall into a monster hit and also forced a change in the Destiny tour setlist to incorporate the two songs, both of which are featured here along with recent Jacksons hits and a taste of the group's Motown classics.

To understand the impact of Michael's newfound success, The Jacksons had already hit Memphis in May, playing the 2300 seat Orpheum Theatre, but came back in November to perform at the Mid-South Coliseum which holds over 10,000.

Rumors of this soundboard recording have swirled for some time, and inferior or incomplete audio of the show has appeared on YouTube. This is the first optimized transfer of the master cassette, correcting azimuth, AC hum and other issues. The board tape is not flawless, but it is nonetheless a remarkable capture of a compelling performance, especially the early live renditions of Michael's solo songs.

Notes: Recording quality is subpar for me. I tested a new small recorder (Deity PR-2) that added distortion when I took the levels too high. The last 1hr45min suffer from distortion, and the last 65 minutes are worse. However, I was able to restore it pretty well with an ExpressFX Audio Restoration plugin. Enough to make it listenable. Lesson learned, don't be spooked by "clear bag" policies and keep using my hefty Zoom H6 essential, which clearly has much better pre-amps. FYI, the only other time I used the Deity PR-2 was at Beck with Cincinnati Pops Orchestra on July 21, 2025.
