Rap Hundred and Thirty-One: Each of us is Quite A Few Things

Perhaps the first vinyl I ever treasured was my shaped Ghostbusters logo picture disc, with the instrumental on the b-side.  When I spun it at 33 1/3rd, it sounds extra tough like all 45s do.  I've meant to play with the grittier sections for a long time now.  This is a clumsy stab at that, with layers blended in from other songs off the first and second soundtrack.

My original plan was to rap on it myself, and maybe I still will, but for now here's a version just to celebrate the last day my limited edition t-shirt is available.

To celebrate 3000 facebook likes on the rap legend Jesse Dangerously fan page, I revisited a song from the album that taught me almost two decades ago that rap could be ANYTHING YOU WANT and still incredible.

Jesse Dangerously releases his new single, Pumpkin Spice Illuminatte, a hilariously catchy celebration of Autumn’s favorite flavor, produced by Seattle-based producer, Spekulation. The song is a bass-heavy hip-hop track featuring Jesse’s trademark lyrical precision, this time with a more lighthearted twist. “All of my other songs are either about being incredible at rap, or my emotions about politics,” says Jesse. “So this is notable in being the first song I've recorded in a two-decade career that anyone has enjoyed listening to at all.”

“What really inspired me about the song was how well written and rapped it is. It’s pretty rare I get handed a project that has it all, including a sense of humor, and I just get to have fun with it,” says Spekulation, who is best known for his viral hit, "Bout That Action" (“Probably the best song I’ve heard in 2014” - Pitchfork). Jesse Dangerously wrote the song during a 2-hour break in-between shifts while scraping by as a rapper-slash-barista in Canada's capital. “I had just come home from a tour in the US where I'd seen pumpkin spice iced coffees at Dunkin Donuts and I snapped.  I just wanted to make my coworkers laugh… I did not expect it would make everyone think I was just so excited for PSL season.”

"Pumpkin Spice Illuminatte" is available now through Bandcamp and Soundcloud. It features cuts by Seattle's DJ absoluteMadman, and backing vocals by KL the Mayor of Ottawa and Nolely Nole. For the rest of the year, Jesse is laying down banjolele parts and wrangling influential Canadian guest spots for an album called I Promised Myself, while Spekulation is locked in his studio preparing his own upcoming album, due Summer 2016.

@EddieQuotez blessed me with another great verse, this time about how we are each respectively a anime.  We describe our daily lives and routines as magic school girls, coming to grips with our powers and our talking animal friends and the meaning of how true friendship can explode the wicked.

Backing vocals are provided during the hook by Cajun Texan English language localization VA legend Brett Weaver, whom you may know as Toji Suzuhara or The Great Damaramu or various beefy roles from Bakuretsu Hunters and Slayers and Nadesico and Those Who Hunt Elves and Macross and Dirty Pair and All-Purpose Cultura Cat Girl Nuku Nuku.  He is also my FRIEND and he is A ANIME as well.

The beat was originally made by @f1rst-source, who produced my Labyrinth song "A Secret Gay Film On Its 30th Birthday" but he had a massive hardware failure in the form of some jackass stole his hard disk, so he quit music for a few years.  During that time, the great and powerful @BadddSpellah  helped me protect  this song from dissolution by remaking the beat with extreme faith and precision.

This song is from 2003, originally slated for an album that was never finished called "The So-Called Solo Project" which was supposed to be funny because I was working with one producer for each song so the personnel was going to be way more than what I'd been doing alone til then.

The incredible beat was produced by DJ DMO, who I'm having trouble getting in touch with again after all these years. Last time I spoke to him he was still happy to see the song come out, so I'm hoping nothing changed that? I know it was made on hardware, and last time we spoke he couldn't find the MPC disks to make stems, so I recorded my vocals over the original stereo mixdown he sent me with scratches in place back then.

This song is a tiny bit complicated for me because I'm still very proud of the craft of the lyrics, but I wrote it when I was 23 so I cringe a little at the self-importance and how deep I thought I was being. There are a lot of lines that don't mean as much as I wanted people to think they did at the time.

I still do feel overall that trying to live as though life will never end has risks, and also that it's kinda too scary to really face the alternative. So at least to that extent it's OK.
