PREMIERE - Doug Cooney - Mechanical

Ádhamh is a DJ/Producer currently based in West Clare. After spending many years in the club circuit in Galway, he founded an independent record label, Faoi Thalamh Records in 2020; the vision of which was to establish a community of underground artists that work primarily in electronic music. His latest release ''Nebula'', has recently premiered on Four Four magazine. The track is a love-letter to old-school sci-fi inspired techno; Taking inspiration from titans such as Jeff Mills and Basic Channel, Ádhamh wanted to capture that signature sound of the Detroit-Berlin fusion that began to emerge in the 90's. 

For this iteration of the RLSD podcast, Ádhamh provides us with a 100% Vinyl mix, toeing the line between spaced out Detroit classics and modern hypnotic techno: ''I wanted to explore a psychedelic/hallucinogenic side of techno for this mix, with the flow of the music mirroring the different key stages of a trip. Spaced out techno for the onset, more challenging atmospheres for the peak and a nice break of tension for the return.''

Offtrack's 8 track LP, A journey through loop-driven hypnotic techno with a 90s taste. Each track showcases Offtrack's masterful production skills, combining rich intricate rhythms and pulsating basslines to create a immersive listening experience.

"Discolouration" sets the tone for the album with its driving beat and swirling stabs. The looped synth melody, pulsing bassline accompanied by vocal hook creates a sense of tension and urgency that draws you deep into its groove.

"Movements Within" features a hypnotic rhythm that is augmented by intricate percussion patterns and atmospheric textures. The track gradually builds in intensity, adding layers of sound and complexity as it progresses. Most definitely an early morning stepper.

"Optimism" is a meditative track that emphasizes Offtrack's use of fm synthesis & subtle melodies. The aggressive percussion and raw textures accompanied by a vocal loop somehow comes full circle adding layers of depth to this track.

Track 4: "Searching" bridges the gap with some beatless ambience, it brings some level of emotion to conclude the first record on the LP.

"Accustomed to Minimal" a minimalism with emphasis on the sparse percussive elements and atmospheric textures. The track creates a hypnotic soundscape that is both intricate and minimalistic.

"Step into This" features a hypnotic, loop-driven polyrhythm that is augmented by intricate patterns and atmospheric textures. The track gradually builds in intensity, adding layers of sound and complexity as it progresses.

"Imperfections Running Deep" a haunting track that showcases Offtrack's skillful use of atmospheric pads and soundscapes. The pulsing bassline and subtle stabs that build throughout, use methods of call & response create urgent senses of tension for the dancefloor.

"Call for December" brings the album to a climactic close with its bassline and ethereal synth textures. The track leaves the listener on a high note, eager to dive back into the hypnotic world of Offtrack's techno soundscapes.

Overall, Offtrack's the LP is a must-listen for any techno fan. The album's seamless blend of rhythm, atmosphere, texture and hypnotic melodies creates a captivating listening experience that showcases Offtrack's skill and taste for the genre.

A fellow fan of the vinyl format, Doug presents a killer techno mix that is relentless from start to finish, displaying an end product that shows, in exemplary fashion, his dedication to the craft of vinyl mixing.  

Doug is best known as one of the main guys behind the RLSD techno label and is a highly respected music production (and DJ) teacher in the Bray Institute Of Further Education, alongside Sunil Sharpe.

Doug has released on other respected labels such as Orbis, GND, Gynoid, EFR, Bastardo Electrico, N&N Records, Research & Orgone, alongside RLSD Records.

I have been a huge fan of Doug's productions for many years and we spoke many years ago about getting a record out on WMR, so it is great to have accomplished what we set out to do.

Delivering his implacable two-hour missive through blends of breaks-laden rhythms, frenzied machine talk and murky, weatherbeaten ambiences, Sunil Sharpe boggles the mind and knocks senses askew, not letting loose on his astonished prey - understand the odd raver bracing themselves for the blast incoming. Unless they’ve already bashed their skull in the system’s facade and got to taste the visceral high of sound flowing through their body. You think it’s an image, but the man is a literalist.
