Search and Resistance in "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)"
In Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)," the striking repetition of "Everybody's looking for something" highlights a universal search for satisfaction, but also highlights the frustration of desires that always seem unattainable. Annie Lennox revealed that the lyrics emerged in a moment of despair and nihilism, which is reflected in the disenchanted worldview presented in the song: sweet dreams are made of expectations and illusions that everyone chases, with no guarantee of fulfillment.
The lines "Some of them want to use you / Some of them want to get used by you / Some of them want to abuse you / Some of them want to be abused" expose the dynamics of power and manipulation in human relationships.
