The book is a testimony to some of the great Australian architects over the last 150 years and the value competition made to their practice as well as the community-at-large. For over a decade and a half, Sarah Leah waŹqq in the leadership of Human Rights Watch - where she served as executive director of the Middle East and North Africa division of Human Rights Watch. Sarah Leah has now taken up the role of executive director at DAWN- Democracy for the Arab World Now – an organisation advocating for democracy and human rights in the Arab world that was originally conceived by Jamal Khashoggi - the murdered Saudi journalist and rights activist. Prior to her human rights work, Sarah-Leah worked for Goldman Sachs as an investment banker and as lawyer for a prominent New York law firm. Sarah-Leah is a graduate of University of California, Berkeley and Harvard Law.

ICAN won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2017 - and led the push for the drafting of the Nuclear Ban Treaty -- which is likely to attract enough countries' support to come into force either this year or next.

Jonathan talks with Maha Abdallah an advocate and activist for the protection of human rights for Palestinians and more broadly the people of the Middle East. In 2020, Maha assumed a new role as international advocacy officer at the Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies, to be based in Brussels. (alas, Covid travel restrictions has not allowed her to make it there, so she is currently working from Jerusalem).  

Maha was formerly a senior legal researcher at Al-Haq, focusing on business and human rights and corporate accountability in occupied territory and conflict-affected settings. She was focused primarily on the role of corporations in the unlawful exploitation of natural resources, complicity and involvement in human rights abuses. Maha was also elected to the ESCR-Net (International Network for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights) Board in 2018 and serves on the Project Advisory Group of ESCR-Net’s Corporate Capture Project and on the Conflict and ESCR Advisory Group. She received her LL.M. from the Irish Centre for Human Rights and B.A in Political Science from The American University in Cairo.

She specialises in commercial and investment disputes and has over 20 years of experience in commercial and investment treaty arbitrations in a wealth of different industries and has acted as counsel or arbitrator in more than 60 arbitrations.  

Lucy is a Chartered Arbitrator, a Member of the State Bar of Texas and a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales. Her extensive experience includes: arbitrations involving energy, oil and gas disputes - fracking and water rights, land disputes, major construction and design issues, coal mining and power plants, Lucy is listed on the numerous arbitrator panel rosters including the WIPO, ACICA (Australian Centre for International Dispute Resolution) HKIAC (Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre), Asian International Arbitration Centre and the Singapore International Arbitration Centre.

Jeyashree has worked for various United Nations agencies and offices – including the Office of the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Armed Conflict, the Office of the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Children in Armed Conflict, the UN Children’s Fund – UNICEF, and the UN Development Programme – UNDP. In those roles she’s worked on protecting women and children, and civilians more generally, in conflict-affected areas and conflict zones themselves. She has done so – in the field – working with reintegrating children in the Philippines after the signing of the Bangsomoro Peace Agreement on the island of Mindanao,

Jonathan speaks with Sarah Holewinski. Sarah is a 2020 Jennings Randolph Senior Fellow at the U.S. Institute of Peace, advising the Institute on security sector reform strategy. She was most recently senior advisor on human rights to the Office of the Chairman of The Joint Chiefs. Prior, she was deputy chief of staff for policy for Ambassador Power at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations.  

For nearly a decade, Sarah was executive director of Center for Civilians in Conflict (CIVIC), leading efforts to advise warring parties on civilian protection and responsible use of force. In that role, she worked extensively with the U.S. military and its allies and in Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, CAR, Burma, and elsewhere.

After a stint in commercial law, Yvette now spearheads a Red Cross team charged with advancing international humanitarian law - the "laws of war" - within Australian society. International Humanitarian Law is a set of international laws that set what can and cannot be done during an armed conflict. Their main purpose is to maintain some humanity in armed conflicts, saving lives and reducing suffering.

This presentation explores the politics of social justice and young people in the contemporary era from the perspective of feminist debates about ‘affective equality’, the ethics of care, and relational responsibility. It argues that there is an urgency to reposition responsibility as a productive orientation and practice, especially in light of the rise of the neo-liberal, self-responsible individual and associated critiques. It outlines some approaches for rethinking responsibility, drawing out its fundamental link to social justice as a relational and affective pursuit and practice. 

The social circumstances of precarity bring new challenges into view for how educational institutions and the youth sector might address the multiple dimensions of social justice and respond to a pervasive sense of vulnerability, including the accompanying opportunities and demands for care, interdependence and responsibility – towards others, not only the self – that this calls forth. 

Julie is the Deputy Director, Melbourne University Social Equity Institute, a Professor at the Melbourne Graduate School of Education, and an Australian Research Council Future Fellow (2012–2016). Her research areas encompass youth and gender studies, curriculum history, feminism, gender equity and education. She is currently working on a genealogy of adolescence, citizenship and schooling (1930s–1970s) and a history of school design and pedagogical innovation.
