Originally hailing from the Dutch eastern border, Utrecht-based producer Tala Drum Corps (real name Tijmen Lohmeijer) provides BAKK six tracks where his love for futurism and nostalgia collides. Coming from an adolescence of modern dance, Lohmeijer continually seeks a sense of bodily movement in his work - an elementary scenic approach that stems from an urge to bring imagination into life. Ditching outer ends where club tracks are often approached too seriously or ironic, this mini-album takes on another route that feels mature while simultaneously oozing a child-like joy. 

On Parade, the listener strolls along a shimmering motley landscape.

Slowly slipping away in a crystal vortex via its vocal, ’Clear Fall’ shows the art of juxtaposition when its panning drums propel the track straight against its own gravity. Setting the tone for exploration, ’Refraction-S’ provide calm pace with its crisp gridlocked snares and melodic sonar pulses. Continuing a path of hypnotism, the album takes a deep plunge with ‘Lake Technium’ - whose rolling acid line hints to the essence of rave without obvious tendencies. On the flip side, ‘Frog Marches’ recalls emotions strongly akin to the LP opener, but walking a darker introvert thread. Spacious drum programming flutters around a haunting ambience on ’Sp00n’ - showcasing Lohmeijer’s ability to create intricate ear-worm structures. The producer offers an energetic closure with the break-inspired club tool ‘Modernity (Poisoned)’. 

All in all, Parade makes up a multifaceted play that appreciates sonic aesthetics of the recent past but re-appropriates those in a daring and dreamy context.

As a linchpin of Rotterdam's deejay culture, one can hear technoid elements of his homebase fluctuate along an axis of Detroitesque electro. Naming afrofuturism as a major source of influence, this release locks you into RAFF's world through its emotional touch and technical precision. The fourth Plafond sees fine-crafted contrasting pieces complement each other in courtesy of Ulla Straus and Oceanic. Along the wide arbitrary landscape of listening or 'ambient' music, it is a delight to have two artists, separated by the vast Atlantic, contributing quite opposite interpretations of such to the series. Perceptual time feels as a recurrent theme which binds them, albeit in a whole different modus operandi.

In her iconic tactile productions, Straus excavates levels of advanced musical complexity in the seemingly most simple. Throughout two tracks her crude and beautiful technique riffles, compositions that remain prone to the transient, combining field recordings with morphing saxophone and guitar. This is deeply evocative music that turns its recipient into a mode of contemplation. ‘I Forgot to Take a Picture’ breathes melancholic romanticism, ‘Becoming Warm’ feels lorn yet hopeful. Pastoral haze over a rouge-tainted barren, the crackling insides of a wooden forest house. Picturesque and minimalist, Pennsylvania’s Straus manages to temporarily stop the sand from gravitating downwards.

Oceanic antagonises Straus with the triptych ‘Three Sides of a Shell’, recalling different emotions adhering to the fourth dimension. As a performing artist, Oceanic masters the element of suspense. Here, over the course of nineteen minutes, a three-note sequence is explored within the producers imaginatory, chapterised, providing moments to navigate through his fictitious galaxy. Stuttering melodies across azure waters, synthesised bleeps as flickering stars over a moonlit mountain pass. Oceanic’s music feels advanced through actively incorporating contemporary futurism, whilst never losing the glacial glance that is so familiar to its early nineties foregoers. It is as if listening to ‘Three Sides...’ heightens the senses, towards possibility, innovation even, triggering illusions of time dilation, shattering the hourglass.

Radically shapeshifting and surrealist, as spinning sonic prisms taunting the ears, ‘Cercle Vicieux’ and ‘Cercle Vertueux’ channel Fluxus artistry, straying past jazz-licked drones, avalanching low end and blood red scatting. Scenes both condescending and anxious —  this release is carried by its interwoven conflicts, where strange attractors reveal knots at each listen.

The fifth Plafond is a special joint project tying the synchronicity of two contemporary minds. Both Zoë Mc Pherson and Rupert Clervaux are known to actively transgress art forms, reconstituting production methods through respective audiovisual and literary pursuits. The listener is relocated in their musical interzone, bordered by avant-garde experimentalism on one side, and bass-heavy club mutations on the other. This ambiguation lays out a gateway, one through which modern producers can re-adopt the revolutionary energy of those who unraveled conventions on music and sound in the first place — a ‘Cercle Vertueux’, indeed.

As winter strikes, the summery SFV Acid reappears fully-fledged with some sluggish San Fernando Valley funk and his signature acidic aesthetics. Plafond enters its second decade with Cucina Povera and Haron fusing the folkloric and futurist. Maria Rossi and Haron Aumaj (real names) honour musical cinematism on ‘Riffittelyä’, which slowly unfolds during a twenty-two minute trail of exploration, angst and redemption. Meddling voices pinch through an aural mist, Kubrickesque strings impend and cathedral organs relevate. Most striking is the compatibility of Rossi’s tangibility and Aumaj’s computerisation, seamlessly forming a renewed dynamic, as granular as it is loose in texture.

During this unique first collaboration it can be quickly forgotten both artists have highly distinctive styles. We are reminded of these singularities on the other half of the record, featuring two solo works, both rich yet contrasting in their colour and emotion. On ‘Maandag, Spiegeldag’, Aumaj sketches in orange chromatics, a featherweight composition that feels far away from the greyscale fragility that Rossi portrays on ‘Ajatus’. Showcasing two minimalist artists catapulted by their stunning debut albums, this sixth Plafond keeps the listener in constant awe, pointing us to the endless potential of spontaneity.

Comes in Pantone printed outer sleeve with deep red and yellow topped with a silk screened black and a soft pink inner sleeve, wrapped in a dreamy blue Obi-strip printed with white and black, by the BAKK Fuzz Factory.
