This song is for New Orleans and the French Quarter. It was written on the way home from staying at the Empress Hotel the summer before Katrina hit. The hotel is on a one way northbound street less than a mile from the french quarter. It describes the surroundings while i was there, Fat Tuesday and Ash Wednesday. when you left the hotel you had to leave your key, so it became the basis for the chorus. The hotel is still there today.

Some of these songs are studio recordings from an earlier version of the band, The Radiant Mind. Some are recorded at my house, and a few are live performances of me at an Open Mic.  In 2009 "Empress of Old Orleans" was named song of the year by the Houston Songwriters Association.
