2023 has been a great year for Bradley Hutchings aka Guava. Alongside many successful dance singles and remixes, his self-released debut album ‘Out Of Nowhere’ is a gorgeous blend of indie electronica that steps away from his typical club focussed productions. 2024, however, sees Guava move back towards the dancefloor with his latest EP Afterglow, which drops on Faux Poly on March 8th. Since rooting himself in Berlin, Guava has drawn inspiration from across the different facets of the city, something that is strongly reflected in this release.

The opening track ‘Angel’ is a dark trip, born out of experiments with reverb and guitar harmonics influenced by UK Bass and Dubstep, an ethereal techno track described by the artist as “guitar music for Berghain”. Next up is ‘140 Drums’, an essential DJ club tool, a chopped stuttering break and hoover bass roll through a restrained but surprisingly heavy hitting finale to the EP. 

‘F641’ accelerates with continuously pitching synth stabs and a rumbling low end. Inspired by F1, the track hits hard and never stops ramping up. Finally the title track ‘Afterglow’ brings a lightness and warmth to the release, delicately catchy and rooted with a bouncy house beat, the sound of Berlin in Guava’s productions is unmistakably clear.

DJ Polo returns to Livity Sound with an EP that moves beyond the UK funky styles he established alongside Tribal Brothers on The Link Up EP in 2021. Through his productions and steady online radio presence, the Bristol-based producer has been flying the flag for lean, punchy rhythms with a low-end focus, but on If The Glove Fits Polo has branched out to explore different tempos and sounds taking influence from gqom, techno and Afrobeats. 

Much like his approach to funky, this isn’t a set of genre exercises but more a celebration of the shared qualities which bind together dance music from different parts of the world. The result is four sharply-defined club workouts unique to DJ Polo that balance tension and release, flair and subtlety and a consistent physical weight true to Livity’s emphasis on soundsystem suitability.

Four distinct traxxx going from full-blown seismic tremors to lithe, dreamier fare. A love letter to the halcyon days of ‘90s hardcore, perhaps?

Synths darting (just how we like ‘em), ragga vocal samples enhancing that UK kinda feel. First track sounds a bit like something you might have heard in some disused airplane hangar circa ’92.

Kicking off with a trio of straight-to-the-point accelerators and closing on some lush, levitational gear. Hi-octane rave utopia or blistering ride into oblivion? You decide.

He said not to mess with his breaks. Nuff said really.

Hessle Audio welcome Laksa to the label with three tracks of rowdy and forward-thinking dance music, following his last release on Timedance in September.

On the A-side, ‘Fire Kit’ sees the London-based producer and DJ approaching his sound from a different direction, with dancehall infused percussion offset by enveloping layers of sub-bass warmth at 95bpm.
The B side jacks up the tempo with a raucous energy as the temperature drops to below freezing. Basslines rumble in ‘Belly Brocka’ and ‘T’s Tent’ like an approaching storm and snares lash through the mix like ice picks, with the broken rhythmic energy driving the dance forward in 2021 and beyond.

Running the club night and monthly NTS show ‘re:lax’ with re:ni, Laksa has been consistently pushing bass mutations since his early EPs on Beneath’s Mistry label. A Bristol bass bobbler at heart, his hybrid sound has found a home on many respected labels such as Timedance, Ilian Tape and Whities, cementing his place amongst the latest UK talent.
