We've collaborated a number of times over the years to great results and I humbly submit that this one is no exception! I was so glad when he took up the project because I felt like the original hadn't reached its full potential, but also that I had taken it as far as I could.

Not sure I want to dissect this one all that much. Sometimes I don't know where these tunes come from and looking back they seem very foreign to me.

Serpentine Vision

This track was made for the "Solar System" compilation by Mind Experience Records, released for free on ektoplazm.com in April 2012. Since Mars is our closest neighbor, I thought it'd be okay to give some earthly flavor to this one along with the space sound. I was considering Mars also as the Roman god of war in my choice to use all these hard hitting tribal drum samples. All in all, I think this fusion of psytrance, 8-bit, and African music came together as a cohesive tune. When I listen to it now, I imagine being abducted by aliens while hanging out eating shrooms with Terence McKenna on the African plains and then taken for a brief tour around Mars before being gently returned to Earth.

Mars

I had this melody dancing around my mind for a while, conjuring images of a peaceful fantasy world. I love when a melody has been with me for some time before I commit it to recording because it makes the production process almost effortless. I like to imagine my inner child laying in the grass at the edge of the pond on a warm summer day in Maine, drawing pictures in the water with my finger.

Real Church

This is up there as one of my favorite tunes I've written. I was thinking about Led Zeppelin's "Over the Hills and Far Away" when I came up with the guitar riff, hence the title. This track really showed me how much further I could go blending psy electronic music with analog music. I was living on a beach in Massachusetts at the time, surfing every day that I could, and drew a lot of inspiration from the ocean. Those were some of the best years of my life.

Across the Oceans (and Far Away)

My friend and I interviewed the late great visionary artist Paul Laffoley on a local radio show we were producing. 

I forget if it was the anniversary of his father's death, or if it was his father's birthday, but he wanted to channel the spirit of his father through mediumship to ask him what was in the notes of Leonard T. Troland that had been lost due to having been written on non-acid free paper. 

His father worked at Harvard and had known Troland, had access to his work, and Paul believed it had something to do with what he called "mind physics." Paul, a lifelong Bostonian, and his family had a long history of involvement with the Spiritualist church; a new religious movement with a strong focus on mediumship and seances with a significant concentration in New England.

So that's where I pulled this sample from. It was truly one of the strangest experiences in my life.

Channeling a Riddle

This song was initially produced on the heels of the great dubstep wave in the early 2010s, running utterly contrary to the popular sentiment in electronic music at that time.

I felt a very strong pull toward more classic sounds, so I made a point to fuse rock drums, guitar, and most importantly bass guitar, into a predominantly electronic package. Tapping into positive forces the best I could, my intent was to create an uplifting feeling that could be communicated without words. After remixing/remastering the track in late 2020 and reflecting on the pain and hardships we have all undoubtedly experienced in recent times, I’ve made a bold decision and dared to hope again.

Hope for love, for health, for peace, and for fellowship as we emerge from this darkness with a newfound wisdom. Despite my reluctance to hope, for fear of disappointment, I would rather muster up the courage to push through the fear and reclaim that positivity I discovered all those years ago. I hope this tune finds you well and that you might shift your gaze along with me toward Brighter Days.
