Featuring dancehall legend Capleton, this standout track from Migs’ recent full length Outside the Skyline captured the attention of none other than dub legend Mad Professor. Where Migs created a beat-driven, progressing tune, Mad Professor halves the tempo, saturating the track with space reverb and dancehall stabs. Then the Prof takes things one step further with the dub – a stable hi-hat ride lights the way through an absolute haze of echo and vocal chops. The second half of the single sees the triumphant return of the Petalpusher moniker for a deep Salted groove, followed by a building synth progression courtesy of Thievery Coroporation’s Rob Garza. Rob Paine rounds out the remixes with a bouncing pool party clatter behind Capleton’s alternating growl and croon.

This might be the most leftfield release Worship has put out since those early years of releases. Who would have thought that these two unruly producers would have linked up for a collaboration like this? We did, and we present the musical evidence to prove it right here with their debut release entitled ‘Number One’.

Tanner Ross (Dirtybird, Freerange, !k7, Soul Clap Recordings) and Rob Paine (Worship, Leftroom, Sha-boom, Large Recordings) met upstairs from the Worship Recordings home base at a goodie warehouse event they both performed at. Burning the midnight oil into the breakfast hours together they created a foundation for a friendship that is still going strong 3 years later.

The original mix of ‘Number One’ was created only a few months after Tanner & Rob’s first encounter. Both in foreign territory never working together in the studio, they didn’t know where this was going to go at first. But they both left their egos at the door and learned to trust each other as the ideas and techniques soon developed. Knowing the styles each other has from their previous releases, you can easily hear the influential tones of both of these artists on this track. Big ups to the Don Gorgon DJ Ninjaman for his contribution.

‘Number One (Dub)’ keeps that same dub driven bass line and tight punaany drums the original possess but gives Ninjaman a break on the vocals and dubs out the drums and hits weaving in and out of the track. This rendition still gives you that same crazy fucking horn lick (no other way to describe it) and glorious tech stabs at the half way point. Intended for the heads who aren’t so much into reggae vocals but love the feel of dub.

For the purist, we had to include the ‘Number One (Version)’ track to seal up the trinity. If you know reggae music then there is no need to read any further. If not here is the Urban Dictionary definition of ‘version’: “An instrumental ver-sion of a reggae song often dubbed onto the B-side of a single. Sometimes DJs would rap or ‘toast’ over top of these versions. Through the studio manipulation and experimentation of such figures as King Tubby, Augustus Pablo and Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry this practice grew into the reggae subgenre known as dub.”

All we ask is that you go into this one with an open mind. It will make you smile if nothing else. ☺

After a short break from releasing, Philadelphia’s Worship Recordings moves forward with the next installment from the CIRCLE crew. Focusing on the groovy techno sound, the Circle gents have out- done themselves with the ‘Dark Waves EP’ that will be released corresponding to their debut EP for Matt Tolfrey’s Leftroom Recordings.

‘Rise of The LFO’ has been working the dance floors this year on dub plate to selective audiences. The track captures the floor with a heavy and moody bassline layered with a hypnotic synth that rises and opens-up as the track progresses. Even though this is a rather dark track, the house heads won’t be able to deny its impact when played in the right situation.

‘Machine Dub’ delivers on that timeless dubby sound that put Worship Recordings on the map back in 1998. The track samples a predication from Jim Morrison envisioning how music would be created in the future. Well it is safe to say he hit the nail on the head with that one - even giving Nostradamus a run for his money. Plenty of bass and eerie textures accompanied by a original 808 drum pattern get the heads into this one. Just ask Jay Haze or Someone Else how they have fused it into their sets.

And finally, “Move IT” brings back together so many elements of a sound CIRCLE is establishing for themselves. The track weaves eight minutes of techy - and at times funky - percussion together with layers of moody synths, bells and a haunting vocal sample from the past. Like the other tracks in this EP, this will no doubt appeal to both house and techno heads.

TRAXSOURCE LIVE! Sessions #185 - Rob Paine & David Marston

Rob Paine's roots run deep. From the moment he heard the deep dubby sounds of Reggae as just a youth he knew he had found his sound. His love for the heavy Reggae sounds grew into a forward movement and soon took on a life of it's own by using the foundation of reggae music as his center piece for all his house & deep techno productions. In 1993 Rob began DJ'ing and throwing events with his crew, "Circle Productions", who were responsible for the most popular parties and weekly club nights in Philadelphia throughout the 90's. During this time Rob started producing a broad range of reggae and reggae influenced music including house, deep techno, broken beat, dub, and down-tempo. His unique sounds were soon being released on labels like Large, Tango, Shaboom & Greyhound just to name a few. Following the success of those tracks, his music was licensed to labels like Bedrock, Fabric & NRK. In 1998 Rob formed his own world-renowned imprint, Worship Recordings. 

The Shakedown events were soon developed as an outlet to showcase his productions and the artists signed to his label. Twelve years later, the Shakedown is still going strong.

Over the years Rob has performed at some of the most exclusive clubs and events in locations like Canada, Mexico, Jamaica and London. He has played the infamous Fabric, PS1 in NYC, and Francois K's Deep Space event. He has held monthly residencies in San Francisco, weeklies in South Beach Miami, performed year after year at the Shambhala & Soundwave festivals in BC, and is currently holding down residencies in DC and Philadelphia. When we asked Rob about holding it altogether he said "It's really exciting to be able to switch between the two genres of house & reggae... always keeping a fresh perspective on both genres and pushing the limits with new sound elements."

Rob produces the majority of the projects released on Worship. In 1999 he was awarded the 'Most Innovative Producer' by the Philadelphia City Paper. His 'dub house' style of production marked him as a forward thinker, blazing the path for future infusions of dub and house sounds for years to come.

He recently released 'What You See' EP on Matt Tolfrey's LeftRoom Records under the name Circle with partner Keith Landis & Gerhardt Koerner (Rise 8) that is doing extremely well. Being selected by Maceo Plex for recent mix compilation. Circle also released the Dark Waves EP on Worship in January, 2014. And a 45 for the vinyl only dub label ZamZam Sounds with his bredren Ras Heights under the name Heights + Worship. You will see a lot more releases from Circle and Rob Paine's other projects including a full length Rise 8 album and a EP on i Records.

Rob Paine is an innovator, visionary & one of the cities most prolific DJ's, producers & musicians. He continually pushes the elements of dub into house and techno music. He has created a world renowned studio & sound system with his full commitment to the city of Philadelphia's ever continuing music mecca. His talent shines furiously every time he performs whether it is House or Reggae or somewhere in between. Rob Paine does not disappoint. Pure quality every time.
