Techno\Electro\Minimal

When I came to London last year to join fabric and head the A&R for the artist led label Houndstooth I got dragged down to Hackney Wick for what was going to be a life changing techno event of the rawest level. This happening is what has inspired my series of Warehouse Sessions, where I have reached out to my favourite techno artists and asked them to get inspired by that unique thump thump betwixt concrete sounds that industrialised techno spaces always provoke and provide a suitably banging mix for my Electronic Explorations podcast series.

This week I've kicked off another round of mixes lead by Our Circula Sound man Sigha, London resident Ø [Phase], Semantica Records boss and Spanish producer Svreca, Italian producer and co-owner of Repitch Records Shapednoise (One half of Violetshaped) and finally a US producer who has released on Sandwell District & Stroboscopic Artefacts, Rrose.

December 2012 brought mixes by USA producer Skirt, UK producer Truss aka MPIA3, Stormfield & myself, Irish and Greek producers AnD and French producer Kangding Ray (his being voted EE mix from all shows in 2012)

Though relatively small in size, the Finnish scene has provided the internationale of techno with some key players over the years, including our next RYC show guest, Samuli Kemppi. Having stacked some impressive releases for the likes of Ostgut-Ton, Mote Evolver, Nonplus, M_Rec and more, the Helsinki-based sound architect’s name has become synonymous with top-of-the-range deep and hi-impact 4x4 DJ wares. Dwelling the subliminal frontier betwixt pitch-dark ambiences, laser-precise rhythmic mastery and an ever-astoundingly minute care for sound design, Samuli’s trenchantly hypnotic style sure lacks no floor-enslaving potency as his new mix for us attests to. Surrender to the Scandinavian wizard’s entrancing masterclass.

Proud Brooklynite Adam X is one of the most pivotal figures in techno. As a founding father of the US rave scene with his brother Frankie Bones, he played hard and fast in the early years before losing himself in industrial. Having very much driven the revival of interest in that style, he remains at the sharp edge of the scene from his current home in Berlin, where he continues to turn out raw and visceral sounds on his Sonic Groove label.

It is a timeless two hour selection that covers deeper techno as well as the sheet metal synths and hammering beats Adam is known for. Strobe lit, sweaty and grimy, it oozes the sort of realness that has always separated him from the crowd.
