James Heather is a pianist, composer, and publicist for Ninja Tune that has appeared on these pages on numerous occasions. James and I have a mutual passion for sharing the music that we discover. A few years ago, he’s made an ambient focused Headphone Commute Mix for this very same podcast. Today I’m syndicating his selection originally appearing on his very own Moving Sounds program that he runs on London’s Soho Radio. This monthly show “was born out of the long-running playlist of the same name created by James that explores spaces between classical, electronic, ambient, soul, jazz, drone, film soundtrack, folk, field recordings & other transporting sounds from the past but mostly from now.” This particular mix is featuring many of my favourite composers whom I am honoured to call friends, and I was even happy to contribute a track of my own. Ten years after the transcendent syncopated debut ‘Progress Chance’, Ricardo Donoso returns with a pulsing retrospect of rhythmic determination and wide-eyed wonder with ‘Progress Trap’, his new album for Denovali. As is customary with Donoso, the moods on these electronic miniatures vary from piece to piece; some somber, brooding, and laden with mystery, others starry-eyed, tinged with sci-fi, and hungry for adventure.

Connections are finally forged between Donoso’s early hardware synthesizer arpeggiation experiments, his darker and more abstract work with an emphasis on synthetic textures, pulsation, and sound design and the more recent extreme full throttle electronic mayhem and prog inspired technical opuses found in the Calibrate/Re_Calibrate/Content era. 

Progress Trap is as harmonious as its predecessor allowing dissonance to subtly seep in, providing mere hints at the undercurrent of threat hidden beneath the music's smooth surface. If ‘Progress Chance’ was naive and innocent, ‘Progress Trap’ is mature and calculated. Perhaps some of the optimism has extinguished, but there is a stalking exhilaration which threads through the entire album, taking on merely different shades between sides – as with most of Donoso’s work something verging on a deep longing always lingers heavily as an aftertaste. There's a lot to digest on Progress Trap, as with Donoso’s entire canon, but as always, the effort is repaid.

Chapter http://joinchapter.com has teamed up with Rayna deNiord of San Francisco's artist platform, Modyfier http://modyfier.wordpress.com to launch Chapter's new music series, COMPOSITION_DISORDER. Based upon the blending of disciplines of similar mind and direction coming together as an inspiration of sorts, COMPOSITION_DISORDER features the artist's own uniquely conjured interpretations of dark, distorted but emotionally powerful ambient sound. By creating irregularity in compositional spaces the perspective of scale and the listener's place is shifted.

The first of the music series, Shadows Fall, is provided by The Sight Below http://ghostly.com/artists/the-sight-below, an alias of Rafael Anton Irisarri http://irisarri.org. He is an American composer, multi-instrumentalist, curator, producer and interdisciplinary artist based out of Seattle. The music of The Sight Below conjures half-remembered dreams and soft-focus sentiments with elegiac beauty; his compositions are emotionally spacious and mesmerizing ambient soundscapes intertwined with subtle pulsations. As a producer, he’s had remixes commissioned by The Naked And Famous, School of Seven Bells, and Pantha Du Prince. His original recorded works are widely published in over a dozen labels scattered across the globe, most notably Ghostly International (USA), Morr Music (DE), Touch (UK), and Room40 (AU). 

“Shadows Fall” was inspired by Chapter's own take on the potency of minimalism.  Interweaving layers of melancholic guitars and raw bass tones to ritualistic percussions, it focuses on the power of early industrial and post-punk aesthetics, amplifying and echoing Chapter’s own design inspiration.

Jóhann is a figurehead in a dynamic and developing scene of composers who move freely and inventively between film scores, minimalist classical, ambient and electronic music. He is equally at home writing commissioned works for the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra, Bang on a Can and Theatre of Voices ensembles, as he is collaborating with Tim Hecker, Hildur Guðnadóttir, Pan Sonic, CAN drummer Jaki Liebezeit, Marc Almond, Barry Adamson, and Stephen O'Malley of Sunn O))).

Requests from filmmakers to use Jóhannsson’s music in their films has led to a flourishing career in writing original music for more than a dozen movies. Jóhannsson was awarded a Golden Globe in January 2015 for Best Film Score for The Theory Of Everything, directed by James Marsh, whilst his music for the film also earned him both Oscar and BAFTA nominations for Best Original Score.  Jóhannsson’s score for Denis Villeneuve’s Sicario was similarly honored with a BAFTA and an Oscar nomination in 2016.  

This year will see two major films featuring Jóhann’s original music: Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival starring Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner, and James Marsh’s The Mercy starring Colin Firth and Rachel Weisz.
