My first truly public original song.  This song is about all those feelings that arise when you see someone beautiful and new for the first time.  Excitement, trepidation, and joy show up here.

Tell Me

The second original song I’ve released on here.  This song tells the story of someone giving their heart to another, having that person reject their advances, then suddenly changing their mind.  

As I wrote the lyrics, I couldn’t help but feel that the accompanying music should emit fire.  From there, the ascending pre choruses alternating between thirds and seconds of the melodic minor scale and the tritones in the verses came naturally.  The string bass and the piano represent the allure of the other person invading the singer’s thoughts, distracting them from moving on.

My goal was to bring the text to life with driving, jarring music that boils as the song goes on.  The later entrance of the string bass and cello serve as the other’s last attempt to bring the singer back to them.

Back to the basics with this one - just piano and voice.  A This song explores someone's mind when they feel tentative to trust and love someone else.

I thought I would take a trip back to my roots of my YouTube channel with this one-man a cappella cover of "Infinity," by One Direction.  My version takes a more subdued look at this song, really interpreting the lyrics in a different light.

The song is fantastic - I listened to it on repeat for basically the entirety of the day 1D released it.  I am a big fan of One Direction and wanted to get a cover of theirs on my channel.

I made all the sounds in this cover!  I did not use pitch changing tools to hit the low or high notes, nor did I ever use autotune.  I recorded this on a Blue Snowball mic in my closet.  I mixed this track on GarageBand.

Infinity - One Direction Cover (A Cappella)

At first, I wanted to cover "Light in the Hallway."  Then, I wanted to cover "Ref."  Then it was "First Things First."  So I thought, why not cover their whole album?  

Pentatonix gives me such amazing musical inspiration.  I am lucky to have the chance to showcase their brilliance in four and a half minutes.

I chose the order of the songs and words from each with specific intent.  Viewed in a certain light, I realized that the songs on this fantastic album could tell the story of someone falling in love, residing in it, falling out, then coming to a resolution.

I pre-recorded all the tracks (except for beatbox), so the video is my best attempt at lip-syncing with them.  However, my iPhone video records with some latency, I found out after the fact *sigh*.  Therefore, I had to continually split the video clips in iMovie to get them close to matching with each part, rather than just letting them run and having the video be behind the audio by the end.

PENTATONIX

I think JT makes some of the most intelligent and complex mainstream music today.  His music brings such a welcome respite from the monotony of top 40 songs.  He inspires my own musical thought and songwriting in many ways.  

SO, I wanted to pay tribute to his legacy the best way I know how... By making a 5-part a cappella arrangement of his biggest hits and then putting my face in five different places on the screen.  ;)

The order of the songs I chose is based chronologically based on album.  Within each album, I put the songs in whatever order I wanted to get the best transitions.  The rundown of songs is below:

I just used GarageBand to make this.  I didn't use any pitch altering tools in this video.  That low bass at the beginning came as a result of me rolling out of bed and right to the mic.  I hope you enjoy it!

EVOLUTION of JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE

Rather than cover one of his more popular songs off this album, I decided to arrange a mashup of the whole thing.  Then I sang, beatboxed, and brought to life an idea that had been a long time coming.

I chose the lyrics from each song with the intent of telling the story of a relationship.  It begins with the uncertainty of meeting someone new, then falling in love, hitting a rocky patch, falling out of love, then coming to a resolution.  If you've listened to PENTATONIX, then you might notice that this narrative arc is almost exactly the same as that one.  However, thematic similarities between different artists' music is another topic altogether.
