In 1987, a string of armored truck heists swept through the West Coast, brutal, surgical, and unsolved. The media dubbed the crew The Silverbacks because they wore heavy gray jackets, gas masks, and moved like soldiers. The take? Over $3.2 million gone without a trace.

No fingerprints. No witnesses.
Just security footage showing a hand-scrawled symbol on the back door of every robbed vehicle, a primate’s skull with a single eye missing.

Here’s where the story gets strange:
A year after the robberies stopped, one of the trucks was found deep in the Angeles National Forest, burned to the frame, doors ripped open from the inside. Inside the cab were cassette tapes, half-melted. When the police reconstructed some of them, the recordings weren’t voices or music, just distorted basslines and rhythmic pounding, like someone banging metal on concrete.

Locals near the area still claim they hear it, the “jungle rhythm” echoing through the canyon after midnight.
