It was about 1:15am on a gorgeous playa night. The amazing Airpusher art car dropped me off near Slutgarden after playing for nearly 2 hours (thanks for having me DJ Cue!). I was exhausted from running a 50K earlier that day and already playing 3 sets after that. As the Art Car sailed off with my mentor and friend Mr. Bounceman Jeff Peters rocking the decks, I strolled a few hundred yards away from the esplanade mania. I gazed back at Slut Garden and took a deep breath - the crowd was thick, the lasers were insane, the sound system was thundering. The DJ was absolutely slaying it to a teeming dance floor of frothing burners. “Holy shit, I’m next” I thought. I walked back and joined the revelers on the dance floor and my blood pressure began to rise. Moments later the backstage gatekeeper smiled and guided me up the stairs after I told her I was a DJ. Hell isn’t everyone a fucking DJ at Burning Man? But I, I was next. I was happily greeted by Tig Playafied and hugged warmly. Instantly I felt relaxed, comfortable and welcome. The moment I had been working towards was now upon me. Every mistake I had ever made on the decks flashed through my mind and I felt grateful for them all. I knew that each one had served me well; and without them I wouldn’t be equipped to pull off the performance I had been visualizing for months. I had my first track ready to play; but as it often happens, plans can change in a heartbeat. DJ Skwarczek winded down the volume on his track, pulled out the mic and told the crowd he wanted to take them back to their first Burn and brought up the classic “Children” by Robert Miles. I’ve always loved that track. I thought to myself “ayyyye I got just the right track for this”. He asked me if I wanted him to fade it out and I said “no way brother, let that shit go - imma let it ride and then mix in at the end” and plugged in my sound recorder. Thank you Brad for the incredible opportunity. This is my story. And this is my set:
