Wow, this trio is a brilliant testament to your composition, orchestration and arrangement mastership, which you have perfected it to the maximum. Great innovative usage of solo violin and chello elements in conjunction with the singers. Absolutely original and uniquely signature classical music!

Wonderfully complex composition and stunningly performed.  Those opening chords really set the mood for the piece, but it's the strings that really grabbed my attention.  There's so much variation in the attack and dynamics that make the strings so "vocal".  Very beautiful and, at the same time, unsettling.  Lovely work

Very dramatic - truly night-time music. The way you bring the interplay between piano and strings is so interesting. It's somehow a very visceral experience.

I like the intense piano melodies and the strings as well for this song. It is full of expression and the performance is simply exceptional! ✨

Some of the chords are simply gorgeous. Nice use of extended technique. I like the mixture of consonance and dissonance.

Love the harmonic side to this, makes me think a lot of Takemitsu in parts, Szymanowski in others. The harmony and textures really make this a psychological journey. Thank you for the share.

Spheres features one of America's greatest piano trios, the Claremont Trio, and consists three trios by Robert Paterson: Sun Trio, Moon Trio and Elegy for two cellos and piano. The Claremonts are joined by their former pianist Donna Kwong on Sun Trio, and cellist Karen Ouzounian on Elegy. The entire album was recorded at the Academy of Arts and Letters in New York City and produced, engineered, mixed and mastered by legendary producer and engineer Adam Abeshouse.

Robert Paterson and the Claremont Trio first became acquainted through Adam Abeshouse. Paterson asked, "which is the best piano trio you've worked with recently?" Without hesitation, Adam said, Oh, Rob, the Claremont Trio, of course." Paterson then contacted the trio, sent them a copy of his Sun Trio, and waited to hear back. Fortunately, they liked his trio, and agreed to record it for this album, but at the time, Paterson had no idea what the other works would be on the album.

After recording Paterson's Sun Trio, the Claremont Trio suggested the idea of Paterson composing a brand new trio especially for their ensemble, and for this album, which ended up being Moon Trio. To round out the album, Paterson suggested his Elegy for two cellos and piano. All three of the works on Spheres are inspired by or have something to do with celestial bodies—the sun, moon and the cosmos.

American composer Robert Paterson is a true New Yorker—born and bred in Buffalo, he lived in Rochester and Ithaca for over ten years, in New York City for over twenty years, and now lives in Saratoga Springs, near the Adirondacks. Paterson’s colorful music embraces a wide variety of themes, everything from goddesses and online dating to mathematics and the environment. His music is filled with emotion and fierce rhythmic energy, marked by elegance, wit, and meticulous craftsmanship. Named Composer of The Year by the Classical Recording Foundation at Carnegie Hall, Paterson is the winner of the Alfred I. DuPont Award, and his opera Three Way won the Grammy® under Best Classical Producer of the Year. His music is often a Best of the Year pick on National Public Radio. His orchestral tone poem, Dark Mountains, regularly airs on NPR’s Performance Today. Three Way premiered with Nashville Opera, then BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music), and across the United States. Minnesota Orchestra, Louisville Orchestra, The Oratorio Society of New York, Buffalo Philharmonic, Albany Pro Musica, Albany Symphony, Musica Sacra, Austin Symphony, Vermont Symphony, and ensembles worldwide perform his works.
