Why Do We ?

These songs were recorded in a rather primitive fashion with the help of two of my longest musical companions and one3 enormous Roland keyboard, during one of our regularly debaucherous (yet still productive)road trip adventures (read: hazy pilgrimages) to Bucknell University in the middle of PA. "Find Another Way" was produced, written, and performed by Will Hopcraft (Guitars, Backing VOX) and myself, Luke Fragnito (remainder of instruments/Lead VOX). "Somethin' to Call My Own" was engineered and co-produced by Michael Lloyd (A.K.A. MRZL)and myself over the course of a single 4-hour sprint from tuning to tracking to mixing and printing. At this time in our musical educations, we hadn't yet discovered such fine and efficiency-increasing luxuries as punching-in, digital cross-fading, ProTools, auditioning takes, etc. It was like we were cutting and glueing 2.25" reel-to-reel tape back together like it was the 1950's/60's all over again. (Fun fact, I've never performed this song since we recorded it that fateful day, simply due to the very real fact that MRZL can't recall the tuning that he set his Martin to that morning, which is not an uncommon event if you've ever had the pleasure to know my friend Mike for any length of time. They say, that to know him is to love him...and also to lose your goddamn mind). Mais, c'est la vie! The last song on this short little EP, "Forest Grove," started out as a parody Gospel piece, and ended about five minutes later in a very fun and, in my opinion and anyone who is hip to the references, a pretty touching little ode to my childhood and my friends along the way. This song is special to me because I perform the parts in what we fondly refer to as the old "one-take-cake-let-me-out-of-this-crate" improvised performance style of recording and writing. All of the words, the piano parts, the melody, even the key I'm sure, was just one of those lucky spur-of-the-moment improvised shots - the kind that make my gambling half boast a resounding "I told you so" to my slightly more conservative approach that is de rigeur in terms of tracking styles in most of the studio sessions I'm a part of to this day. Oh well, just grab the bowl and meet me in Forest Grove. Cheers...
