For SATB chorus, a cappella. The term Missa brevis translates as “short mass.” It is derived from the mass of the ordinary (Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei) but with some movements removed. Many composers from the renaissance to the modern era have composed settings of “short masses.” The nucleus of my setting, the Kyrie, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei, is taken from the Missa XVII Adventus et Quadragesima (Mass for Advent and Lent). Each of these three movements includes an incipit (intoning chant) before each phrase mirroring the original chant. Regardless of differing performance practices, the diamond shaped notes of the incipits should be sung slightly faster than the round notes. All three movements contain changing meter but the measures have no written time signatures. This should help to visually create fluid chant-like phrases without always feeling a strong beat at the beginning of each measure.

The bookends of the mass, Rex, Requiem and Bless, O Lord, Us Thy Servants are identical musically except for the Amen section of the latter. Both movements were composed in memory of a mentor and dear friend of mine, Dick Young. The text Rex, Requiem, originally titled Epitaphium Angilberti (The Epitaph of Angilbert), was written by Angilbert (c. 740-814) for his own headstone. I have substituted the name Angilberti for the Latin translation of Richard, Ricardus, to pay homage to my friend. Although this mass was not intended to be a requiem, the first movement lends itself to that genre. One can personalize the Rex, Requiem by replacing a different name as I did, or the movement can be omitted altogether.

The Anglican-chant style of Psalm 23 and the anthem, A Prayer of St. Benedict, compliment the overall ethos of the mass. All the movements are quiet reflective settings that can be sung individually but are best performed together. This Missa Brevis is suited well for a liturgical service and equally for a concert performance. The vocal lines are fluid, and the ranges are conservative making this an easily accessible work. Your choir will thoroughly enjoy singing this reverent setting.

I wrote "Weep You No More" over the course of about 9 months, constantly revising and editing. I felt so drawn to this text immediately (author anonymous, 15th century) as it spoke of peace, reassurance, and calmness- and in fact I wrote the opening section in under half an hour, as it seemed to flow so effortlessly. The text is as follows:

"Weep you no more, sad fountains; 
What need you flow so fast? 
Look how the snowy mountains 
Heav'n's sun doth gently waste. 
But my sun's heav'nly eyes 
View not your weeping 
That now lies sleeping, 
Softly, softly, now softly lies sleeping. 

Sleep is a reconciling, 
A rest that Peace begets. 
Doth not the sun rise smiling 
When fair at e'en he sets 
Rest you then, rest, sad eyes, 
Melt not in weeping 
While she lies sleeping, 
Softly, softly, now softly lies sleeping."

Track from some time in the late 1990s recovered after being lost (in my house) for close to 20 years! Original recording was on cassette; I apologize for the sound quality. Performed by the Gregg Smith Singers, the Adirondack Festival Chorus and the Adirondack Chamber Orchestra conducted by the composer live in concert in Saranac Lake, NY.

Originally composed for an Earth Day service for Central Baptist Church, Wayne, PA in 1993 (& partly as a way to decompress from doctoral exams).

The text is by visual artist Joe Miller (not "Jim," as only a few of the mis-attributions have it) written in 1975 (originally laid out in the form of a sphere). It constitutes the full text of a children's book by him entitled "If the Earth...Were a Few Feet in Diameter" published in October, 1998.

The singing text differs slightly from the original version; the final words added by the composer:

If the earth were a ball only a few feet in diameter, floating above a field somewhere, people would come from ev’rywhere to marvel at it.

They would walk around it, marvelling at its pools of water, and the waters flowing between the pools.

They would marvel at its features and the very thin atmosphere surrounding it.

They would marvel at all the living creatures moving on its surface, and swimming in its waters.

The people would declare it precious, because it was the only one, and they would protect it from all harm and danger.

The ball would be the greatest wonder known, and all would come to behold, to be healed, to gain knowledge, and to wonder how it came to be.

People would love it, and defend it with their lives, because somehow they would know that their lives and their own wholeness could be nothing without it.

If the earth were a ball only a few feet in diameter…
