‘She Walk Indigo’ meanwhile drops the energy back down to earth as Kevin’s trumpet drives a loose-limbed finale that almost floats into your ears, so light is the playing and atmosphere. 


‘Fluke’ then follows with double-time drums pushing a widescreen pop sound and plangent pianos into overdrive, almost creating some new jazz/funk/indie/DnB hybrid! 


The album closes on ‘Everything Was’ as Kevin’s mellow trumpet solos sit astride a gloriously shuffling dreamscape that sounds like early Groove Armada at their hazy sunset best. 


The album was mastered by Graeme Durham who’s worked with Sigur Ros, Seasick Steve, Grace Jones, Prodigy and more.

Initially released nearly a decade ago, ‘Beluga Lagoon’ has undergone not one but two re-inventions in 2023. 

First up, producer and composer Robert Burbidge has breathed new life into his old track, turning a shimmering Balearic tune that revolved around Robert’s trumpet riffs into a fuller, richer and more dynamic version. Backed by Samba-esque drums from Dan Hudson, toe-tapping bass and guitar from Ian Stanford and stunning string and synth work from Alex Johnston, the updated version swoons and swings in all the right places, creating a dreamy and evocative piece of music. 

The second part of the re-invention comes as the Yorkshire composer has turned over the stems for the remix treatment. 

DJ, producer and soundtrack artist Mr Bird is first up, with the prodigious remix artist turning in a silky-smooth version that makes the most of the languid, jazz-influenced original. A veteran with more than 200 remixes for the likes of The Herbaliser, Lee Fields and Odyssey, 
Mr Bird turns the found sounds up and concentrates on the flow and rhythm of the remix, creating the kind of track you could hear Gilles Peterson rhapsodising over on his 6 Music Radio show. 

Not to be outdone, Cork DJ and producer Matthew Collins steps up next and delivers a beautifully Balearic rework, dialling in more disco and fun vibes and providing a gently propulsive beat underneath to power the remix forward.

UK producer Robert Burbidge teams up with scratch champion for new release ‘Rainy Day’ 
‘Rainy Day’ features DeeJay Random, a 2 x Technics/DMC champion and also includes a remix from Annabel (lee)'s Richard E UK producer Robert Burbidge has enjoyed a prolific 2022 to date and has turned to the hip hop and  scratch champion DeeJay Random for his next collaboration ‘Rainy Day.’
‘Rainy Day’ is a wonderfully-chilled spoken word release featuring long-time collaborator Winter on vocals with Burbidge on piano. Burbidge and Winter (keys) then teamed up with Ian Stanford (guitar and keys) and Steve Gligorovic (bass) to create an almost-finished track that ‘Down By The Sea’ era Groove Armada would be proud of. 
But, says Robert, there was something missing from the track. And after discussions, those parts were sent to DeeJay Random, a scratch DJ DMC champion who’s played alongside Jazzy Jeff and Coldcut and rocked clubs like Fabric and Pikes, Ibiza. He worked his magic on his turntables to provide intricate cuts and scratches over the original track, creating a laid-back but highly textured collaboration that brilliantly blurs the lines between indie and hip hop. 
Burbidge has had a busy 2022, with several well-received releases while also working on 2023’s album ‘Blood and Tumbleweed.’ But as Burbidge recalls, ‘Rainy Day’ was all about taking his sound back to his roots. 
“We wanted to collaborate for a while with DeeJay Random, so this track was perfect. I’d worked with a scratch DJ before and was even taught to scratch in my 20s by my friend Ric Morley AKA undosequence who was an excellent scratch DJ. We’d buy records, watch the DMC Championships and then scratch back at my house. We then started putting on nights in Leeds and Hebden bridge where Ric would scratch over the bands and house DJs. I was really inspired by DJ Food, Coldcut, DJ Vadim and DJ Shadow, so it’s great to have come full circle and create our own take on that sound.” ‘Rainy Day’ is backed by an excellent remix from  Richard E. A composer and producer for Annabel (lee) with albums released on Ninja Tune and Youngbloods, Richard E makes greater use of Winter’s atmospheric spoken word vocals, creating a slightly moodier remix that recalls Boards of Canada’s dreamier moments. ‘Rainy Day’ is released as a stand-alone single on 4th November via Tune Core and iTunes with the full ‘Blood and Tumbleweed’ album to follow in 2023. UK producer Robert Burbidge starts new year with cinematic new single ‘Morley’ 

New Americana-influenced single tells the story of ‘Morley,’ a fictitious character here to save listeners from their mid-afternoon slump

UK producer and composer Robert Burbidge spent 2022 releasing a series of stunning dreamscape singles, criss-crossing the line between indie, chill-out, downtempo and soundtrack-inspired music. 

And he starts 2023 with more of the same with the release of his new single ‘Morley.’ Once again, he teams up with long-time friend and collaborator Stevie Gligorovic to create his new Americana-influenced single. 

And they had a very clear musical mission as they started work.

“We wanted to push the sonic environment into a dreamscape of an Americana “Mid-day Mare,” says Robert. “We wanted to try and capture the doldrums of a 3:45pm lull of another day at work in a dead end job, the time of day when your blood sugar plummets.”

The end result is a dreamy bed of music, all lush guitar and bass licks (courtesy of another long-time collaborator Ian Stanford), shimmering drums and a melody that lazily ebbs and flows. 

And riding that lazy flow of melody is the story of ‘Morley,’ a fictitious and very kitschy character created by regular collaborator Winter. Taken from one of Winter’s short story collections, the heroic character of Morley provides a real focal point for the track, giving ‘Morley’ a real sense of “optimism and perseverance in a seemingly dismal situation.”

When taken alongside the music, Winter’s writing and emphatic vocals bring real life and joy into ‘Morley,’ creating an immersive, almost cinematic track that tells a real story. Which neatly reflects the musical direction Burbidge and his team have been leaning towards recently.

“I’d say my love of films plays into ‘Morley’ and how music really helps to create the immersive story world for the audience. I just watched the film ‘Brian and Charles’ and I loved the sound design in it - it was subtle but powerful.”

Which perfectly sums up the musical direction Burbidge and co are heading at the moment.

For all that you plan ahead in life, to try and create certainty out of chaos, some of the best moments come when you least expect them. 

And that’s true of the new release from Robert Burbidge and Winter, ‘A Voice of One Calling In The Wilderness.’

While improvising on a 1937 Chickering concert grand piano owned by Grammy-nominated engineer and producer Dennis Moody, LA composer Winter started ‘channelling something or someone’ and conjured the most incredibly moving four minutes of piano playing. And thankfully Moody was there to press record, otherwise, this moment would have been lost forever.
‘A Voice of One Calling In The Wilderness’ is released on March 17, 2023

First released in February 2022, Amarillo gets a new lease of life thanks to the pop-punk Armadillo remix. 

The track’s original producers Robert Burbidge and Steve Gligorovic are the brains behind the Armadillo remix, as they pump up the beats and the BPM to create an energetic rework that totally transforms the original. 

With guitars and a New Order style bassline to the fore, and with Winter’s vocals sounding more urgent and insistent, the Armadillo remix breathes new life into one of Robert Burbidge’s best releases.

UK composer Robert Burbidge has taken that Mark Twain quote and run with the idea he’s gone back in time to rework one of his first tracks under his previous moniker, Rubberlips.

In its original incarnation, ‘Lagoon’ was a six-minute blast of shimmering chill out, a Balearic Cafe Del Mar-style tune that revolved around Robert’s trumpet riffs.

Fast-forward nearly a decade, the track has been subtly re-titled ‘Beluga Lagoon’ and reimagined with a fuller, richer sound. The hazy, chill-out vibe has been updated with a more dynamic direction and jazz-inspired flexes on keys, strings and synths. Add in swaying percussion from Alexander Johnston, Dan Hudson’s Samba-smooth drums and a pulsating bassline from Ian Stanford, and ‘Beluga Lagoon’s update is a more powerful and dynamic reworking that veers towards colourful sunset Samba.

From cosmic indie jams to spaced-out chill-out anthems, there’s not much Yorkshire producer and composer Robert Burbidge can’t turn his musical talents to.

But even so, his new single ‘Just Because’ is a striking change of pace, as Robert teams up with singer and lyricist Mikey B on the indie-pogo punk of ‘Just Because.’’ 

With Robert and the Mikey channeling their inner Ian Dury, ‘Just Because’ launches with a thunderous rolling bassline - courtesy of long-time collaborator  Ian Stanford who also doubles up on rhythm guitar - and doesn’t let up from there. The on-point politically active lyrics might have been written in 2017 along with the first idea for the track, but they make perfect sense for a polarised and discontented summer of 2023. Working alongside fellow collaborator Winter, co-producer Steve Gligorovic, and with mastering by Dennis Moody, Burbidge has created an indie-pop single that will stand the test of time. 

The package is completed with two remixes that both take the original in stunningly different directions. 

Spanish disco synth king James Rod steps up first with his arpeggiator, creating a driving and moody remix underpinned by a huge new synth bassline and placing the dynamic guitars from Oceanjaws’ Brian Acton higher in the mix. James is one of the most prolific and respected disco and nu-disco producers in the world, with releases on Gouranga, Midnight Records, and Ashley Beedle’s Ramrock records. This remix fits in perfectly for the producer known for his dark and uplifting synth disco. 

Leeds DJ and producer Andy Buchan then turns in a chugging mid-tempo indie-disco remix that makes full use of the incendiary vocals. Known for his disco and indie edits and original music that spans house and nu-disco, Andy uses his near-decade of production experience on his ‘Just Because’ remix, creating a new version that neatly straddles the disco and indie worlds.

Music is truly timeless. 

Tracks and albums written over a decade ago can still sound as relevant and important as if they were written today. The only thing that matters is the music. 

And that’s especially true for Robert Burbidge, who’s followed up a treasure-trove of freshly-created singles in 2023 with his latest release ‘Nightingale’ that first came to life over a decade ago. 

‘Nightingale’ was an improvisational composition created and recorded in 2009 by Winter, with the basis of the track recorded during a one-take capture in her native LA. 

Winter’s plangent piano lines and off-the-cuff melodies form the body of ‘Nightingale,’ says Robert. 

“Winter has a catalogue of pretty phenomenal improvisational captures that are all one take - you can actually hear the pauses in the recording, where she’s thinking real time of what to do next musically. She manages to hit some really interesting chord progressions and harmonies that seem to just come out of nowhere.” 

Nightingale was produced by Steve Gligorovic and Robert, who added a soundscape feel to ‘Nightingale’ by mixing in bird sounds and atmospheric synths to Winter’s stunning piano track. 

The result is the stunningly simple and effective ‘Nightingale,’ a sombre yet powerful single that neatly bookends Robert Burbidge’s stunning year of music. And as Robert says, it doesn’t matter whether the track was written in 2009 or 1009, as the source material is so powerful. 

“When Winter sent me this piano tune, I really wanted to do something with it, to enhance and capture the mood and atmosphere of the piano tune. Some people might equate this to a fine bottle of wine in their cellar that has been ageing properly.”

British art-rock favorite Richard E is elated to share “To The Moon”, the first single from his upcoming Opening Scene album, due for release in January 2024.

A mesmerizing track exploring cryptocurrency, NFTs, and the emergence of the blockchain, "To The Moon" creates a mystical mood. Instant wealth is a dream many people have, but those dreams often come crashing down. The music video for “To The Moon” will be released on November 17th.

When describing his new single in greater detail, Richard E writes:

"At the time I wrote it, "To The Moon" was a very popular phrase in the crypto world. Coins that suddenly increase in value were described as such by Elon Musk and digital currency adopters.

On the album, it's the only song where the music was dictated by the title. Writing the music usually inspires the lyrics, or I find some lines that I've already written that fit the rhythm and mood from the music.

On a lyrical level, I was trying to express the craziness of the crypto phenomenon, but "To The Moon" is also a romantic phrase. It also references a 13th Century Chinese myth involving a turbulent relationship between the Goddess of the Moon and the God of the Sun, which revolved around the pill of immortality, but eventually made peace. The song is also given a timeless feel by this. Realistic and romantic at the same time."

“To The Moon" exudes an old-fashioned prog pop sound with hypnotic vocals reminiscent of David Bowie or Bryan Ferry, jaunty guitar riffs, and psychedelic undertones.

Great dance rock remix by multi instrumentalist producer Robert Burbidge aka Rubberlips.

His work has had repeated global airplay, including on the UK’s BBC Radio 1, Soho Radio, on cult LA station KCRW and via the award-winning Lopsided World of L show.

Robert Burbidge, the acclaimed UK writer and composer, has no shortage of hits over the last few years, having created a body of work that stands up to the best in the business, with tracks like ‘Still Life’ and ‘Just Because’ getting picked up by Radio 1 amongst others.

Richard E, signed to Ninja Tune and Youngblood Records via his work with Annabel (lee)  and fresh from the recent success of his debut solo album Opening Scene, tones down the shoe-gaze flourish of the original in favour of a subtly-charged remix by putting Winter’s plangent piano to the fore. 

By smoothing out the indie-rock feel of the original and adding in driving and drifting metronomic percussion (not to mention the duelling guitar solos of Jon Dalton), Richard E has created a lush slice of indie-pop that bursts with summer magic and energy.

A classically trained trumpet player, composer and producer, Robert Burbidge is one of those rare talents that blurs the lines between classical and contemporary music.

Having trained as a professional trumpet, cornet, flugelhorn and piano player from the age of seven, Robert made his way into several orchestras and bands including the National Children’s Wind Orchestra.

With classical music in his blood thanks to his parent’s upbringing, he then broadened his musical scope, turning first to jazz, and brass bands and then dance music as a teenager.

Working under the name Rubberlips, Robert became a hit on the dance music scene, working alongside Grammy-award winner Louie Vega, Utah Saints, Damo Suzuki (CAN), Groove Armada’s Tom Finlay and Ashley Beedle, while performing at prestigious venues including the Royal Albert Hall, Dublin Castle in London, Trades Club and Beatherder festival.
Robert has now moved on from his Rubberlips alias and launched a solo career as an independent composer, producer and music maker. As well as working on solo projects for a variety of highly-respected labels, he’s also collaborated with a wide range of diverse names including Gregory Thomas (Funkadelic), Robin Lee (Faze Action) and Kevin G Davy (Cymande). And working alongside long-time collaborator  Steve Gligorovic and singer/songwriter Winter, he’s released several stunning singles they are currently finishing with their first album, Cold Hearts and Bad Debt,   with Winter alongside  The Haggis Horns ( Mark Ronson, Amy Winehouse,  Jamiroquai, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas)  and Toby Baker (BB King, Sinead O Connor, Eric Clapton).
His work has had repeated global airplay, including on the UK’s BBC Radio 1, Soho Radio, on cult LA station KCRW and via the award-winning Lopsided World of L show.

Equally at home producing with a live band or using cutting-edge software, he’s perfectly positioned once again to blur the boundaries between music genres. And as ever, Robert’s unique sound resonates with depth, texture and that all-important groove that blurs the lines between classical and contemporary music.
