The first single to be taken from Slam’s truly astounding upcoming album ‘Reverse Proceed’ sees the hypnotic Pattern A3 alongside some of Techno’s biggest and brightest new stars adding their own versions also.

Slam have chosen one of the major standout tracks from Reverse Proceed to set the tone prior to the album’s full release in late October. With the album built around the concept of varying sequences, it’s fitting that the first single be given such an apt name. Taken directly form the Cirklon sequencer pattern that helped design the track Pattern A3 features heavily modulating synths that seems to have a fully organic life of their own set against the typical backdrop of 909 drums. 

Following on from Slam’s original, Soma have enlisted the help of 3 of the label’s favourite contemporary Techno artists. Argentina’s Jonas Kopp is first up on remix duties and deliver an absolute pile-driver of a remix with his signature thudding drums and machine-gun like percussion firing rapidly against subtle and stripped synth elements.
 
Swedish based Bleak is a very welcome addition to this package as he offers his own ‘Modular Interpretation’. Heavy sub bass and intelligent drum work outs combine with yet more subtle hints of the original’s synth elements to give a more deep and introspective version. 

Rounding off the EP is latest Soma artist Charles Fenckler. The young French artist is making waves in Techno at the moment and has certainly delivered on this project, giving his version a much more minimalistic, stripped and ends up with a solid dance floor burner.

Danny Wabbit returns to the forefront with Manic, a carefully crafted five track EP that serves as a visceral journey through the psychological spectrum of the dancefloor.

The EP opens with the unexpected: 'Fear Is Nothing But A Tool', a cinematic dubstep intro to set a dark, preparatory tone. It then ignites with the title track 'Manic', a hypnotic and powerful techno cut built to induce peak-time frenzy.

Stripping techno back to its raw essence, 'Severed' delivers a minimalist homage to the genre's warehouse roots. This raw intensity then gives way to the meditative groove of 'Breath Work', a track centered on calming, pulsating rhythms. The EP closes with the soulful and uplifting vibes of 'That One House Track', the perfect euphoric finale to a long night.

It’s a rare moment in the life of Robert Hood’s M-Plant label when he hands over to another producer, but no surprise that he should pick Mark Broom for the next release, seeing as he’s previously been entrusted to provide edits of Hood’s tracks for the label’s 20th Anniversary celebrations (MPM19) and is currently tearing up dancefloors with his unreleased dubplate mix of Floorplan’s ‘Never Grow Old’.

The original version of ‘Stunned’ was released on Mark Broom & Dave Hill’s renowned Pure Plastic label back in 1997. The “97 Mix” featured here started as a live mix of the track, which Mark has now tweaked for maximum dancefloor devastation.

It’s accompanied on the flip side by a brand new composition of equally outstanding quality. Broom is in fine form on ‘Decay’ with his tight production skills delivering the kind of tough, raw Techno that sits perfectly on M-Plant.

Returning victorious to M-Plant after the Floorplan album and EP takeover, Robert Hood, whose work under his own name has continued to garner equal support with the ‘Paradygm Shift’ series for Dekmantel, brings the heat with this triple-tracker in May.

The original minimal techno master wastes no time with opener ‘Clocks’. There’s a sense of urgency as the track builds, looping into its crescendo with waves of staccato hi-hats. Tick tock, tick tock.

Over on the flipside there’s a familiarity in the opening chords of ‘Low Life’ that will resonate with fans of Hood’s work. Instantly recognisable, it’s stamped with his ability to bring funk and groove to the colder stomp of techno.

Final opus, ‘Go’ brings a spiralling samba tempo to the dancefloor. The punchy drumbeat is interwoven with sweeping cymbals for a highly effective infectiousness, like a call to arms, or better still, the Brazilian call to carnival.

I arrived in Los Angeles in 1989 where I become bi-costal traveling between Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco working in the Film and Music Industry. Dancing in the Sound Factory, End-Up, Ice Factory, Mayan, Orbit, the Cat Club and the underground of LA. I threw undergrounds in downtown Los Angeles and ran a legal warehouse for four years. This is my beginning. It will never end.

Before I got into this music I wanted to be an originator ; I wanted to be original".
Founding member of the legendary group Underground Resistance as a 'Minister Of Information' with ‘Mad’ Mike Banks & Jeff Mills, his seminal works on Jeff Mill's Axis and his very own M-Plant imprint paved the way for a wave of stripped-down dancefloor minimalism that directed much of techno's path throughout the late Nineties.
Robert Hood makes minimal Detroit techno with an emphasis on soul and experimentation over flash and popularity. 

"Growing up in Detroit, I grew up with Motown in the house - a lot of Motown and Philadelphia soul, artists like Marvin Gaye of course and Curtis Mayfield. I remember Isaac Hayes, the soundtrack from ‘Shaft’ had come out. My father was a jazz musician; he played piano, trumpet and drums. My mother was in an R’n’B group.
We listened to a lot of Motown - in fact, my grandfather’s first cousin is Berry Gordy.
"I was influenced by my father - I wanted to play trumpet like he did."
Robert's father tragically died when he was just 6. The photo of Robert siting down holding a trumpet is his fathers.

In the early 90's he began to concentrate on his own production 'Vision EP', the 'Riot EP' and X-102 were big stepping-stones for him as they were the first releases he worked 100% on his own. The X-101 to X-102, were Waveform Transmission projects with Mills for Tresor. He slowly progressed to work more and more on his own, but collaberated on some of the first Axis releases with label owner Jeff Mills as H&M (Hood & Mills) with ‘Tranquilizer EP’ and ‘Drama’.

He soon decided it was time for him to start his own label to focus on what was in his soul musically. M-Plant started in ’94. I had developed this “grey area” sound - what I mean by that is that in Detroit, even when the sun is out, there’s something in the atmosphere. I don’t know if its pollution or whatever, but the sky has that grey haze over it. It’s got to be something from the industrial factories there. I’d never really heard a sound like that before and it came from a Roland Juno - it was a chord sound that really went along with my depiction of what Detroit was at that time. A lot of buildings were abandoned and there was a lot of lifelessness in the city, especially downtown. The M-Plant, in minimalism, kind of reflected that. I remember thinking of Detroit like a museum. You know, like a work of art standing still, suspended in time. There wasn’t a whole lot of activity going on.

Releasing singles such as "Internal Empire,", “The Protein Valve” "Music Data," and "Moveable Parts", "The Pace", more recently "Range", "Alpha" and that isn't even touching his other monikers Floorplan, Monobox, The Vision, etc.
"M-Plant is what I've always wanted to hear: the basic stripped down, raw sound. Just drums, basslines and funky grooves and only what's essential. Only what is essential to make people move. I started to look at it as a science, the art of making people move their butts, speaking to their heart, mind and soul. “It's a heart-felt rhythmic techno sound. M-Plant is just M. minimal. “

Although his desire to remain underground has been replaced by an urge to reach a wider audience, mainly via his housier, disco, gospel moniker Floorplan with his daughter Lyric Hood,   Hood remains fiercely critical of artistic and economic movements destructive to inner-city communities and has combined his musical enterprises with outreach and social activist ends.
