Everyone’s favourite bangin’ Brisbane duo X CLUB. ready up four typically in your face cuts of driving, textured techno on 1Ø PILLS MATE that have us dreaming of giant warehouses and sweaty hugs. Channeling big rave energy from grime, electro and breaks - and ultimately using this influence to texture their heavy sound - the pair take inspiration from the 90’s rave movement and contemporary experimental artists.

‘Turning A Blind Eye To This Nonsense’ delivers on the escapism it promises, staying true to the driven aesthetic that the duo have become known for; sirens blaring, deep atmospherics and uncompromising rave. Fellow Australian Mutant Joe is enlisted on ‘Silo’ - an acid dipped techno-electro workout spawned from the depths of hell.

The record's biggest moments arrive on ‘Beta Rays’, where both the artist's interest in sound design and sonic engineering across their respective solo projects really shines across 8 minutes of cinematic rave. Managing to capture the nostalgic rave feeling that Bicep’s ‘Glue’ channelled to roaring success, X CLUB. serve up an emotionally-driven journey that is destined to dominate sound systems around the globe.

Their UK influence is felt most heavily on ‘300mpbs’ (½ of the duo, Benedict Clarke, is actually from Bristol); a gnarly cut of snarling drum & bass influenced breaks that is sure to incite a gun-finger trigger rush in the club.

Appropriate name for this mix as well as 'Groove On!' became the mantra for every track selection, transition, and layer I worked through while putting this together. This one came with a clear mission: to celebrate hard groove in all its forms—past, present, and future. The result is a mix that not only showcases the evolution of the genre but also fits snugly into the broader series ethos. From modern hard groove stalwarts like Chlär and Julian Muller to foundational acts like Killa Productions, every track had to contribute to that relentless, dancefloor-focused rhythm.

What makes hard groove so fascinating (and at times, difficult) is balancing its history with its modern reinterpretations. Some tracks lean into its roots, with that unmistakable percussive drive and looping funkiness, while others push boundaries, incorporating contemporary techno, acid, and even trance elements. For example, 'Las Lilas' might stand out to some as the odd one here, but I find it as groovy as any other track and proof that a little melodic flair can still fit within the groove’s hypnotic pulse whilst also aligning it with the other mixes + giving us a well needed melodic break before we get back to grooving.

The mix starts a bit heavier on techno vibes—tracks like Introversion’s ‘Body’ and Franck’s ‘Rose Tinted Glasses’ set the tone before we fully dive into hard groove territory. From there, it’s all about relentless energy, intricate drum patterns, acid-tinged loops, and basslines that keep pulling you deeper. Highlights include Mall Grab’s ‘Disconnect,’ Chlär’s ‘Competitive Influencing,’ and old-school heaters from Killa Productions with ‘Women Beat Their Men.’ or Deetron ‘Decipher Language’ And to cap it all off, Joris Voorn’s classic track ‘Incident’ with its ever-evolving energy, proving why it’s a cornerstone track for me.
This mix isn’t just about the tracks, though. It’s a journey through the soundscapes that shaped my understanding of peak-hour energy and what it means to get a crowd moving—not just physically but emotionally. Funky, relentless, and always with a wink toward the groove’s future.
