Ritual Poison

Belfast’s Robin Wylie has long been twisting up heavy, analogue bass sounds, winning the ears of the likes of David Holmes along the way. After debuting on Ritual Poison with the swirling, hazy breaks of ‘St Paul’s’ on last year’s ‘Pharmakon’ compilation, he arrives full force with four-tracker ‘What is Zero?’.

Build around booming subs, bubbling acid and ecstatic female vocals, the title track highlights Wylie’s knack for dancefloor fusion, peak time electro seeped in subtle rave flavours. ‘Pulse Track’ draws inspiration from somewhere between 90s techno and bleep, adding a modern percussive drive and bass weight. The electro-breaks of ‘Shadows In The Sunlight’ serves up a journey of tension and release, building then breaking in waves of 303. And ‘Kid Dynamite’ earns its title, low end exploding under heavy breakbeat house riding crunchy acid, whoops and warping effects.

Artwork come from label favourite Alec Jagodzinski, whose 2000 AD-inspired imagery accentuates the EP’s sonic evocation of resistance to an encroaching dystopian future.

One of Belfast’s true unsung heroes, Robin Wylie chooses to ignore the typical four four sounds that Belfast is well known for, instead opting for breakbeat, 2-step & jungle influences.

His studio is a hardware haven, where a Midas desk handles all the routing and connections, making capturing live jams easy, yet also providing the ability to take mixing and mastering out of the box for other artists by running material through a host of outboard equipment.

Robin’s release on Extended Play touches on a lot of what we love, breakbeats, acid, Detroit synth lines & sprinkles of dub magic. A versatile four tracker that mixes between the peak time energy of Tweakin & Cuts Of Doom, the dubbed out Wach Ya & downtempo Ibiza Dub.

The New Rhodes

The Devroy EP by Robin Wylie is a 4 track EP which takes you on a nostalgic journey through the 90s capturing the early spirit of rave. Made using analogue equipment, this EP is creative, raw, and unique and tells the story of one night in Birmingham.

Opening with My Sound Rude Boy, a 136 bpm breakbeat track reminiscent of the tunes of 1991 complete with whistles, classic rave samples, and a steady driving rhythm which is only interrupted by an emotive hands in the air breakdown - standard - before returning with more force, additional choppy amen heat, cymbal clash and acid warbles. We're on our way straight back to 91 and I think we've found the rave!

"If you want it" that is ........although there was no turning back now. The 2nd track set at 140 bpm is a relentless, intense, explosion of sound on a more techno tip - sound the alarm! With a pounding rhythm and crazy cartoon style samples, this track has got us feeling like we've gone on the Waltzers a bit too soon after smoking a zoot! Sounds, lights, people, action.... exciting!

Out of the fairground we head into the rave. A dark, smoky warehouse with a banging wall of sound! The sounds of "Acid tastes better with you" is blaring out the speakers, a serious yet hypnotic beat filled with acid bleeps that bubble up and down in intensity as lasers cast a fleeting light on the ravers inside dancing til dawn.

Before we knew it, the sun was shining through the windows and people started piling outside! We decided to get some fresh air and see what the fuss was about. Outside we saw a massive rig had been put up and some mad tune around the 158 bpm was going off! A 4x4 stomper with loads of chopped up breaks over calming pads and other mad noises was blaring out the speakers and people were going nuts. This was different - and proper banging too. We looked around at each other in the light of day and smiled. We'd made it! DESIRE 96!

Ritual Poison celebrates its tenth release with ‘Pharmakon’, a 16-track tape/digital compilation featuring artwork from long-term collaborator Martin Wollerstam. Wth the label started in South London in 2017 by BufoBufo and Corporeal Face, ‘Pharmakon’ welcomes back various members of the RP family while embracing a host of friends and favourites. 


Zodiac Childs and G303 open Side A with the dark, deadly Reese and acid combo of IDM builder ‘Stoor De Zender’. Luxe continues the bumping beats, adding lush pads and vocals on ‘Untitled 045’, then Robin Wylie ventures into twinkly-eyed breaks for ‘St Paul’s’, before BufoBufo’s dreamy ‘Distant Lights’ completes the opening movement. ‘When You’re Alone’ by The Something Something Project (aka Kolya and Susan’s Boy) switches the vibe, soaring into gossamer vocal trance, while Local Group unveil a deeper side to their sound, with the trippy breaks of ‘Mandlebrot Set’. Birmingham’s Rawtrachs heats things back up with the 160 pump of ‘Crazy Deep Feelings’, and Five Eyes takes us to the flip via the captivating, ethereal jungle of ‘Hydro’. 


On the other side, West Norwood Cassette Library starts via a stomping, chunky remix of ‘Dropping With The Force’ by Escape Earth – an alias of the label’s joint founders. Anna Wall & Corbi return to RP with ‘Space Kicks’, epic piano-led breakbeat house, and Ambient Babestation Meltdown combines with Club Glow’s Borai for ‘The Drum Machine (Must Be Stopped)’, an analogue workout that recalls the heady days of electroclash. Escape Earth’s ‘Self Destruct’  is the sound of bass and breaks in existential crisis, while Corporeal Face’s ‘No Longer Have Respect’ is a breakbeat slammer with cosmic alignment. Almaty’s ‘The Peacock Room’ changes tack, re-grounding with emotional acid, N°’s ‘Sink Or Swim’ is mutant, urban dancehall, swaying for one final dance, then WILES’ ‘King Crab’ muscles out the door and into the night with attitude-infused acid chug.

Back from their second year of curating the lineup for Boomtown Fair’s “Botanica Zoo” micro-venue, All Colours Music return with the next instalment of their “Breaks, Steps & Bass” VA series.

Featuring the likes of Sheffield’s jungle mainstay Charla Green, Dublin’s Choki Biki Records founder Sharpson, SE London’s illusive Anti Traxx and more, this 15-track compilation is a celebration of bass music across the spectrum of breakbeats, garage, uk funky, dubstep, hardcore, jungle and everything in between.
