Back To The Future - The Ulster String Quartet

This is a short extract of a concert recording by the Queen's University Belfast Brass Band, which is a student music performance ensemble. It is a recording of their end of year concert performance.

This recording was made for surround sound and has been adapted for stereo listening. A makeshift control room was created to allow for high quality monitoring.

This is a cover by a band called Rickshaw, of a song called Rickshaw which was originally performed by The Desert Sessions.

This track was recorded at Queen's Radio.

The recording room at Queen's Radio was not the best at the time, featuring a long and thin design with glass walls. SE Electronic H1 microphones allowed for a more directional vocal and guitar pickup, however for the latter, more body from the acoustic would have been better.

The keyboard is an old Casio model. Where a direct feed could have been taken, I felt it more characterful to mic up its speakers. I struck by how retro it sounded and wanted to make sure I captured how it really sounded, with everything that its old and well used speaker cones helped contribute towards it. 

A lot of fun!

I am a recording and mix engineer based out of Dublin, Belfast and Manchester.
I specialise in location recording, editing and mixing for classical and contemporary genres.

I am a Cubase and Pro Tools user and operate a purpose built recording rig based around Focusrite preamps. 
My mixing setup includes Focusrite Liquid plugins, Genelec and KRK monitoring.
