Co-written with my friend, composer, sound-designer, Reaktor-Ensemble whisperer and all round excellent human Chris Warner, this is our first collaboration for Audio Network, written during the lock-downs of 2020 and 2021. Featuring a variety of electronics, industrial noises and general miserableness, it's the perfect album not to play at any dinner parties.

The Caves Sessions - Recorded in Chislehurst Caves

Released June 21st 2018 for Motor Neurone Disease awareness day, Synaptic Counterpoint is a new piece for saxophone quintet and tuned percussion.  All proceeds from the sale, streaming and broadcast of the music are being donated to the Motor Neurone Disease Association to support their work into finding a cure for this fatal disease that currently kills 6 people a day in the UK.

Inspired by some images of her research, I wrote the piece for my friend Jenny Greig, a neuroscientist working on the disease at the Department of Basic and Clinical Neuroscience at King’s College London. The piece features Jenny on soprano, alto and tenor saxophones, Josie Simmons on baritone sax and me on percussion. We recorded it at Strongroom Studios, London.

The cover art was created from images of motor neurons created in the lab from patient stem cells, taken by Jenny as part of her research, with graphic design by James Bergersen. The piece features two custom-built Bütone drums (a type of steel ‘tank drum’) designed by James and me, and built by James.

Research and imaging was performed at King's College London. It was funded by a Medical Research Council CASE studentship in partnership with Vertex Pharmaceuticals

Synaptic Counterpoint

Released December 2018 by Audio Network, Hilbre Island is an album of 7 tracks that re-visit the original soundtrack I composed for Hilbre, a short film about the nature of the island. Shot and directed by timelapse / natural history specialist Andrew Schonfelder, the film is available on Vimeo. This 2018 album version sees the structures of the original pieces extended, samples replaced by real players with numerous new parts, and new mixes of all the tracks. It also features two new tunes that were not on the original soundtrack - Turning of the Tide and Magpies and Mist.

I wrote 3 tracks and co-wrote 2 more with Ruth Barrett, Bella Saer and Nigel Crouch for this album of tuned percussion based minimalism for KPM, published through EMI Production Music / Sony ATV. I recorded, edited and mixed the album, and co-produced it with Ruth Barrett. Marimba, vibes and xylophone are performed by Simone Rebello in Strongroom Studio 1, with Ruth Barrett playing celeste.

The Jellyheads formed in 1994 when we were all music and sound recording students at the University of Surrey. What started as an excuse to bugger about in studios late into the night (using as many weird bits of kit as we could find ranging from vintage vocoders and tape loops to devices made from toast),  somehow turned into an actual band. We even went through a brief spurt of doing gigs including a particularly good one on a burning barge on the Thames.  This album is obviously fairly silly, but was a huge amount of fun to make so I hope at least 1 person on sound cloud enjoys it. It's the first album from The Jellyheads and only took us about 12 years to get it together, though there are rumours of a second one being released before we all die. It was mainly recorded through Neve desks onto 2 inch tape with Dolby SR noise reduction  If you know what Dolby SR is, then fair play to you.  I co-wrote most of the material and play bass and occasionally marimba / vibes / percussion / synths. Scary, intense & disturbing - low brass & metallic percussion recorded in Chislehurst Caves. Low brass trio (tuba, bass trombone, french horn) double tracked with and without  mutes to give the rasping effect and reverse Tam Tam effects where percussionist Paul Clarvis plays the gong with a 'super ball' (a rubber ball rubbed across the surface). Also includes slowed down Waterphone sounds.
