Sets II

Legend has it that Hólmar was born during the dawn of winter solstice, way up in the highlands of Iceland, to one of it’s oldest and most secret “Hidden People” communes.  Sadly his elvish mother passed from complications during birth, and one fateful night not long after,  he was found by his human adoptive parents on their doorstep. They were sheep farmers in the valley below and in a letter they found by his side, they were promised the protection of their flock in exchange for raising him as their own. Knowing the many tales of wrath inflicted on villagers not complying with their highland neighbors, they took him in straight away and Hólmar spent his formative years on their quaint farm. 

His mother, an avid swimmer, would bring him to the cold mountain lakes during the summer months and teach him all there was to know about being the best there was in the water. It was during one of these lessons, he was discovered by the national synchronized swimming coach, who by chance was hiking in the area. Enamored by Hólmar’s raw talent, he negotiated his move from the tranquil countryside to the nations capital, Reykjavik City. There he began his training and quickly became an integral member of the Icelandic squad. It was during the course of his training for the Olympics in Seoul, that he suffered a serious injury which ended his professional swimming career abruptly. Fortunately, he was able to continue his passion for synchronized group movements above water and formed a dance troupe called the “Black Widows”.  He traveled with them all over Scandinavia winning multiple competitions and dance off’s.

Throughout his time with the “Widows" he discovered his passion for music while putting together playlists for their shows. Eventually he was asked to perform these playlists "live" at parties all over Reykjavik's then bustling underground scene. After many late night gigs, not showing up to practice and seriously messing up some of their shows, he was promptly ousted from the troupe. This was a devastating moment for Holmar and after a great deal of soul searching, he moved to New York.  

During one of Holmar’s parties at a former brothel on the Lower East Side, he met Greg Oreck and shortly thereafter founded “Thugfucker”. After working together for a few years, during one hot summer night in Hólmar’s studio in Williamsburg, they created “Disco Gnome”. This record ended up being the first release on Life and Death Records and launched them into the international scene along with Tale of Us and Dj Tennis. He spent next years touring with Greg and fellow mates at Life and Death causing general mayhem and good times at clubs and festivals all around the globe. 

In 2011 he went to Burning Man for the first time, a pivotal moment for him, and now he can be found every year, riding his bike around and playing many marathon sets all week long. 
In recent years in addition to his work with "Thugfucker" he has started new collaborations. He co-founded “Lovestruckk” with Nico Stojan, “Theory of Light” with Brian Cid, “The Birds Fly South” with Maxxi Soundsystem and his first release in 2018 will be an E.P with L.A’s Jon Charnis.  He is also a part of a new dj collective the infamous "Twister Sizterz".

In 2018 we will see his departure from “Thugfucker",  launching his solo career

Vanjee - DISTRIKT - Burning Man 2023

It has been a real honor to play at Camp DISTRIKT for the very first time in a year of complete novelty for several reasons: a new location right on the edge of the playa with almost nothing around it, giving it a truly special feeling. Also, it was a sunset to nighttime slot that was debuted with my set and those of my colleagues... and on a day when Carl Cox and Sharam had performed before me. A real challenge. That's DISTRIKT—once the first track plays, the crowd's energy takes over and the session flows effortlessly. An absolute delight. Looking forward to returning.

Get Physical Radio - Beauty/Beast (Philipp Jung & Holmar)

I was thinking about all the long waits in line for Burning Man tickets over the years and decided to give some of you something to listen to while the walking person icon slowly makes its way across the screen holding all our hopes in its little tiny pixel hands. 

The wait time  is usually about as long as it took to get from one side of the playa to the other last year after it rained and the playa shrimp rose up to attempt to take over the world!! 

Burning Mud. Mudding man. Raining man. Remember the wild stories (all from the outside media or Diplo and Chris Rock) vs the kindness and generosity of strangers out on the playa. I hope, even if faced with adversity last year, maybe, just maybe, you also saw how wonderful people can be when called upon in a ‘crisis’. 

I was lucky enough to stay until Tuesday night and grateful to still get to play a sunrise on the Robot Heart albeit a few days later than planned. There was so much love in the air that (finally) beautiful morning. If you missed it or want to listen once more or are just bored and looking for something to distract you while waiting in line for this years tickets (I’ll be waiting too) then here’s burning man/mud/magic 2023.  Feel the love in the air and the tickle of playa shrimp on the soles of your feet.

Lee Burridge - Robot Heart - Burning Man 2023

Hello everyone, last year, as Christina and I made our first journey to Burning Man, excitement would be understated with plans to deliver an electrifying set at the iconic Robot Heart Bus after Lee Burridge. However, nature had other plans — unprecedented heavy rains and flooding at the event meant that, unfortunately, my performance could not go ahead. 

On my recent US tour, our ever-supportive friend, Benjamin from Robert Heart and the rest of the crew, extended a heartfelt invitation to play at their unique San Francisco-Oakland residency. 

This mix is not just a set; it's a token of appreciation to all who were there and an offering to those who couldn’t join us. 

Immerse yourself in a slice of the magic from that night. Whether you're listening from near or far, I hope it transports you right there with us. 

Looking forward to the next gathering at the Robot Heart residency in San Francisco / Oakland on May 9th.

For pretty much the whole year I’m either headed towards or away from Burning Man. 

Each year out there there’s this moment in space and time where I feel perfectly balanced between the two. It’s a moment where time stands still, just for a second. 

That moment is when the first ember of the day’s sun peaks over the mountain top to begin its journey once more. 

I try to find a piece of music to express the feeling of stillness and presence I get.  This year the sun was kind enough to arrive 1 hour 28 minutes and 40 seconds into this mix. I was in awe. I’m still in awe.

Some of the magic of the playa for me is where the nature blends with boundless creativity. Where love meets wonder and we get to laugh, dance and play. Add a dash of music for good measure and, for a moment, that magic catches its breath to take it all in, and stands still.

2024 was one of my favorite years ever. Thank you to all you artists and lovers, cooks and cuddlers. To all those who toil for months before and after to make it happen and to anyone who gave anything to another. You’re all amazing. I’m currently headed back towards (or is it away from) that moment once more.

German duo andhim serve up our next Foxcast ahead of their performance during this year's Cityfox Halloween.

andhim are a DJ and producer duo founded by Simon Haehnel & Tobias Müller. Since their start in 2010, they have published numerous songs and remixes and worked with artists such as Diplo, Rüfüs du Sol or Theophilus London on an internationally successful level.

With residencies in New York, Los Angeles, London and Berlin, they are among the most successful DJ duos in the scene. Over the last decade, andhim have manifested their signature sound without any boundaries in expressing themselves on a creative level. They have cultivated an exceptionally loyal fan base of musical lovers all over the world.

andhim founded their own label Superfriends Records in 2016 which captures a refined and contagiously unique electronic sound. It is an outlet for the duo’s most ambitious ideas. Among others, Artists like Roman Flügel or Acid Pauli released on the label.

It’s been a while since I played DISTRIKT last. After this years experience I’m somewhat kicking myself. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a crowd at Burning Man so wild and fun. The party was electric. Fire! And, it was only Tuesday. ‘Pacing it’ was obviously out of the question for the five thousand or so that joined me. The Robot Heart bus rolled up and plugged in. Hoj tore the place up before me. Our day party extended into night and most of us left with a smile on our faces and an electricity that carried us forward. Beautiful people swung above the crowd in a birdcage (is that safe I kept asking myself in my head)and hips wiggled and swung while the multi-level dance floor bumped and bounced. Basically, best day party at Burning Man ever ever. So, thank you DISTRIKT for giving me an extended set and an amazing party to play. Let’s do it again next year. It’s a date?

"It was a warm Thursday night and I rode up with my crew to the Mayan Warrior linked up with Robot Heart and couldn’t believe my eyes. 
In 9 years of Burning Man I had never seen so many people at one party. 
I always choose to play just one event during the week at Black Rock, preferring to spend the rest of my days and nights exploring and enjoying all the various levels of this incredible experience without the hassle of running from one party to the next. And preparing for my set around 7am I sensed that this was going to be a magnificent morning. I was a little nervous but I had those good butterflies swirling and as the vermilion hue of the pre-dawn began to rise, I stepped up and played this set that you can listen to now. 
I will never forget it.
Being invited to play the Friday sunrise on both buses was a dream come true and I’d like to thank all the thousands and thousands of people that joined me for this special moment and to the dedicated heroes of the Burn that made it possible.
