It was Wednesday night, and anticipation was high. Robot Heart and Mayan Warrior were to link up for the very first time in Burning Man history. So despite it being my third Burn, and second time playing the bus, it felt like my first time all over again. There is truly nothing like seeing the surreal orgy of lights from atop the bus; its glowing, pulsing heart serving as a beacon admidst the entropy. A sea of neon bicycles followed us until we found the perfect spot in the desert. Suddenly the crowd kept multiplying as the Mayan Warrior converged. The energy in the air was palpalbe and increasing in intenisty by the minute. At one point after mixing a record I looked back up to see my surroundings and realized our meeting place had completely transformed into another dimension. It was the beginning of one of the most intense nights of my life. And I am extremely grateful to have been a part of that mystical experience. Thank you to Robot Heart and everybody involved in creating the magic. I will never forget it.

Jon Charnis - Robot Heart - Burning Man 2016

Where to start . . . ?! This second Burning Man experience was indescribable. 
Filled with serendipitous moments, my week was as magical as it could have been.

Robot Heart was the last of the seven shows I played and certainly one I was looking forward to the most. Why? Because I was given the opportunity to play an extended set. Pretty damn special isn't it?!

It's 7.30AM, Saturday after man burn, I wake up all dusty in my yurt after playing through a mad storm at White Ocean from 3 to 5AM hoping for the weather to have settled a little. I walk outside and guess what . . . 
it is a complete white out!!! 

Putting all the good will I have out there, I decide to jump on my bicycle and ride out to the deep playa to find the bus. The wind is very strong and the visibility so low that I literally get thrown off it. I desperately start walking, like a blind man, following whatever sound I can hear. Slowly losing hope, I eventually run into a bunch of white walkers on the same mission. I realise time is running low as I have lost all sense of direction. My skepticism increases, yet my ears magically take me to the Heart just before the start of my agreed set time - 8.30AM. Monolink is performing live in front of a bunch of troopers. I get informed that performances have slightly been delayed due to weather conditions. The sky gets darker by the minute. The crew warns me that rain had been forecasted and that music would have to be turned off for safety reasons in case of another storm. I then realise that my set could just get canceled. Sad face. I pray the weather gods for mercy.
As I get on, the sky magically clears. No more wind, barely any clouds, no more dust. My nightmare turns into a dream and my journey on the decks begins.

I hope you’ll appreciate and enjoy the spontaneity of this set.

Art Project:
Ursa Major
Reaching to grab what is within her grasp is Ursa Major, a 14 foot tall, grizzly bear sow. She may simply be reaching for berries but perceivably she is reaching higher: to the northern sky and the constellation that is her name, Ursa Major. In navigation, the constellation is useful in pointing the way to the North Star.  Ursa Major’s pose is inspiring, she brings the gaze and hopes of the participant skyward. She also demonstrates respect for the bears and nature, her pose is not like a taxidermy bear. She is in her natural state and unthreatening.  With a durable, unique material that was used on their previous Burning Man project (Penny the Goose), Ursa Major’s fur will be made of US and Canadian pennies. The pattern and feel will be like fur.

Early in the evening, so initially a very family affair, but it quickly turned into a lovely dance party with friends and strangers alike.   A lovely experience with great hosts....

Art: Da Vinci Virus - Brennan Steele

Symbolizing the connection between people, technology, and the environment, the Da Vinci Virus was a giant kinetic clockwork bacteriophage. Participants powered the bio machine by pulling a dangling chain to rotate the cube and engage the clockwork skin of the capsid head, thus spinning all of the gears in unison revealing hidden murals etched on each face.  Inline with the theme of last years burn, the Virus was inspired by Da Vinci’s love off geared machines, and burned Friday Night.

Anthony Mansfield - Robot Heart - Burning Man 2016

Making my return to the Playa for the sixth time held special meaning for me as it does every year. However I see Burning Man like lovers. You can't compare them, they're uniquely different experiences. And just like the complexity of lovers, my Burn was magical, beautiful, intense, emotional, intoxicating, lustful, serendipitous, mesmerizing, and yes, sometimes just a pain in the ass.

Still, after all these years, it's my favorite thing on the planet! Playing on the bus is beyond an honor. Sharing my music and reciprocating energy from that perspective with the open canvas and unparalleled conditions is an indescribable feeling. What I'm trying to say is, it all comes from the Heart.

art: Soup Flavored Blankets 

Soup Flavored Blankets creates a welcoming and interactive space dedicated to the chilly, wandering souls of deep playa. Within the walls of our cracker box, participants will experience a rag tag team of Burners providing delectable hot soups, steaming libations and cozy blankets equipped with a convenient soup/beverage pouch. Playa wanderlust exists within all of us and Soup Flavored Blankets is your rejuvenation station along the way.
We're a multifarious crew of friends from Los Angeles, Reno, Chicago and New York who share a passion for soup and service. The SFB story stems from a brief moment many, many years ago, far beyond Black Rock City's Esplanade, on a frigid deep playa evening. There, gazing at the brothtaking sky and discussing the soupernatural, sat our founder, Noodles and his brother, Max. Although initially vibrant and jovial, their topic of discussion soon shifted to the bitter cold air and a desire for simple pleasures.

"I could sure go for a blanket right now. You know, warm me up from the outside in." Max remarked as he shivered in the deepest of deep playa.

"I could go for a bowl of soup to warm me up from the inside out!" Noodles replied.
Now what followed may be the worst idea ever uttered as Max suggested: "How about a bowl of blanket flavored soup?"
In a harsh tone, Noodles replied: "That's sounds disgusting! Who want's to eat soup that tastes like blankets!?"
Hours passed and their situation worsened. But suddenly, a dusty thought shot out of the Man's neon head, blew across the playa, swirled around the temple walls and shot directly into Noodles's noggin as an idea of spectacular brilliance.
"Some Soup Flavored Blankets, now that would be warmly delicious!" He proclaimed.
Max agreed! And the two brothers jumped to their feet, crossed the cold desert floor and returned to camp to procrastinate for seven years.
As veteran burners we understand the significance of your trash fence quest and the sometimes difficult elements you encounter. Soup Flavored Blankets is a warm soupy refuge and our gift to the many wandering souls of Burning Man.

Alright, Gab Rhome, you convinced us! Our livers (and waistlines) could use a cleansing break after all those delicious cocktails. Let’s cut out booze for a while and enjoy a rejuvenating and energizing glass of the earth’s most delicious, most healthy foods: milk!  

Gab Rhome, born in Montréal and living in NYC, milked his favorite cow (what’s her name by the way?) on his farm to ensure today’s Schirmchendrink is full of vitamins, minerals and amino acids. 

Grab a cookie and dip it into Gab’s dreamy and hypnotic vibes. 

He began his musical journey at an early age playing multiple instruments while being shaped by jazz music, and it only took a few years before making a transition towards the rhythms of dance music. 

Only within few years of producing Gab gained worldwide attention with releases on label heavy weights such as All Day I Dream, Anjunadeep, Kindisch, Get Physical and Last night on Earth.  

His delicate melodic tech-house productions have brought him on journeys across the globe, for example to the @radiovenao Gathering in Panama, where this set was recorded. As you are about to experience, a similar voyage is built during his dj sets.

It all began right there on the playa, six years ago under the rays of the morning sun, immersed in the magic of the beautiful Robot Heart sound stage.  A community so powerful and strong, it has become the biggest inspiration for my own musical journey. The people I met, the music I heard and the feelings I had that first night have left a lasting impression and inspired me to learn a new skill and start playing and producing music.

In the modern world, traveling around the world, making countless acquaintances we get lost in this endless whirlpool of activity. We start seeking a sense of belonging, experiences that unite us and inspire to create. This is what Robot Heart does for many of us, whether you come here to dance, play or connect. 

My own experience led me to start experimenting with sound and styles, curating artists that would join us on the playa for a week and become family for life.  We grew into a amazing community, which we call White Ocean, united by our love and passion for creativity and exploration. There is nothing more inspiring for me at the moment than seeing how music can improve our lives and open our minds to new adventures and experiences. It did it for me......

It has been the greatest honor to come back to where it all started and play my set for Robot Heart's 10 year anniversary on the playa. I wish your journey to continue for my years to come:)

Happy New Year everyone! 

2019 is necessarily going to result in some new beginnings in my life and hopefully some positive changes and evolutions for us all.

In line with my own growth, I wanted to get back to my roots of digging really deep to put together a mix that I think is dreamy, ethereal, with haunting vocals and subtle but groovy basslines.

Also, after 3 weeks of watching updates from our dear friends traveling from Vietnam to Mexico I couldn’t keep it together without sharing something with everyone!
