Our 18th episode welcomes @julya-karma, a NYC-based DJ & producer with roots extending from Lebanon to California, and through her musical abilities, and contagious energy, has quickly emerged in New York's underground scene.

Julya's connection to sound started early as she began studying classical piano at the age of 6, and since, has been passionately involved in music at every stage of her life. As an obsessive curator, she finds mixing to be the perfect format for creating an atmosphere of deep, moving melodies, eclectic sounds, and stimulating progressions. An artist bound by no genre, Julya tells powerful, emotional stories through her music, and her live performances allow audiences to unite together to transcend beyond time and enter a higher level of consciousness.

I am so grateful to Robot Heart for inviting me to perform this set which was without doubt one of the most memorable experiences of my life. 

A few years ago, I was dancing as the sun rose over Robot Heart in total wonderment, in a state of total inspiration. During lockdown I recalled that feeling and got to work on two albums, Yin, a classical record and Yang an electronic one. 

Writing these two albums was my therapy during the pandemic, dreaming of a day I could connect with people again on the Playa. It’s just so wild, that the fantasy came true in the best way possible and I got to perform this set, transitioning from Yin to Yang with a special arrangement for the Robot Heart Sunset, opening with about 20 minutes of piano and sound bowls before the electronic beats kick in. 

In order to play the piano live here, I had my beloved Steinway sampled into a virtual instrument and it was a real thrill to be able to play with that sound on the playa!

Yin and Yang were recorded in 432 Hz tuning and are musical expressions of my musings about life, the universe and infinite consciousness. 

I’ve always been fascinated by this quote by William Blake, and it was ringing through my mind the whole of the Freeburn week, and especially during this performance. 

He wrote: “If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is, Infinite. For man has closed himself up, till he sees all things thro' narrow chinks of his cavern.” 

The view from atop the Robot Heart bus warmed my heart, the doors of perception were being cleansed by the beautiful souls in front of me, and I am infinitely grateful. 🙏🏽

Reza Safinia - Robot Heart - Free Burn 2021

This year's free/renegade burn unfolded itself most unexpectedly. 
14 days before the burn, I received an invite from Amsterdam to support a friend's art project with my music. Everything which followed felt like a streak of kind gestures from the universe. 

This art project by Studio Drift brought two hundred drones to the playa to fly a series of magical art pieces in the black rock city sky.  

A tribute for all hearts who have burned in this place. ⁣⁣⁣A gift for the burning man culture and an homage to previous artists who united this beautiful community.  ⁣

To everyone who made this trip and experience possible, thank you. I have no words. The same goes for all those who came to listen. 

All the beautiful burners who showered me with love, support, food, and gifts all week, realize you are part of this recording. 

I am sending my endless love to the Studio Drift  & Robot Heart families for this opportunity to co-create. Without words of how you gift in such a selfless manner. ⁣⁣

This was me in flow on Saturday morning before the sun came out and Diplo took over. I loved this moment in time. I wish you all a beautiful journey, and I look forward to many dusty camping adventures with most of you.

Unders - Robot Heart - Free Burn 2021

The “FreeBurn” was so needed! To celebrate life - we needed to reflect, dance, laugh, cry, and let go - in the place we call home. 

I was a bit nervous playing music this year - I had not DJ'd on the bus for four years after parking myself on “a bench” because of hearing issues. So when I found out I was going to play a small “opening of the bus” set I was stoked to get reacquainted before my scheduled Friday sunrise set. I started with my favorite chill track at the moment. The rest were selected because they gave me a dusty vibe, and I wanted to hear them on the bus system. Some were given to me by close friends - So it was a dusty family affair of sorts. The last track of that set has the vocal “Fade out again” - those lyrics gave me the idea to fade the set into my sunrise set. It was unplanned that these two sets would live together. Or even work together - I only planned my bus opening track and my sunrise moment. 

This leads me to my sunrise set. Where to begin? - how to honor Geo - celebrate the sun - tip my hat to the night - take the crowd on a bit of a journey - share sounds that speak to me - spread some love. I knew I wanted to have a special moment for Geo, but it did not hit me until I was on the plane headed out west. It was sunset and the sun was hitting my eyes through the plane window - and that was the moment it clicked. I was lucky to have WiFi on the pane and searched on all our group chats for a sound bite of Geo that would make sense with the track I had in mind. It took me a few hours, but I found a video with one. It was perfect - very subtle and very Geo. I did a quick edit in Ableton and thought WOW indeed. Big thank you to Brian Cid for taking the edit to the next level and to Jean for delivering the track to me before my set. 

We designed a Geo tattoo this year - I placed one on each forearm - facing opposite directions a few hours before I was to play. Energy in, energy out - That was my “mantra” for my set. I could feel so much love around me, in front of me, and above me in the heart - then the Drone show appeared and blew my mind. Thank you Studio Drift for the beautifully concepted and executed tribute.  

It was hard to judge the sun this year -  as there was so much smoke, but in the end, all was perfect. Feeling all the emotions, I just looked directly at the sun and had a little chat with Geo, expressed gratitude and shed some tears of my own. 

One of my favorite all time sunrise Djs was to play after me - it was surreal. Looking back now, I can see Lee Burridge showing up at sunset and surprising us all was part of Geo’s doing. Geo always called me Dilly Dill. So to have a DillLeeDill morning still has me smiling. Ironically this was the ten year mark where Lee and I first truly connected on the bus with a random morning 5 hour b2b set that started our friendship :) 

Lee had to leave early and there was only going to be an hour left till we were originally scheduled to close the morning. We had asked Holmar if he wanted to play the next day after Diplo (so he could have a long set) and I would just go back on after Lee. Somehow this one hour turned into almost three hours. And I was playing music from folders that were dusty themselves. This set is a whole other story!

I feel blessed to have been able to express myself musically on our magical bus after such a long break. Let’s see what’s next.

Playa Venao is one of my favorite places to play music in the whole world, maybe my favorite after Burning Man... 
This opportunity I had to play the soundtrack for one of the most beautiful sunsets I've ever seen, allowed me to be soft, vulnerable and show a different side of myself. 
There was no need to push the vibe, no need to push the tempo, we could all just be together and feel...

Guy Laliberté - Robot Heart - Free Burn 2021

I'd be lying if I said it was easy to play a sunsrise set at burning man... especially at robot heart.  I had to literally help pull an ancient cow statue down from the top of the heart two years ago to be sent to Germany.  It's like I had to do these ancient quests and other sunset sets to be put in the position to play this past burn, so i was not taking that lightly.  By sheer coincidence I found myself in Reno the night before this and drove straight from my set there to the middle of the desert to a gps location at 5:30 in the morning.  I prepared myself for the sunrise; I knew there would be some doubters, but that just made me work harder... oh and I was on acid.  I think it may have been the best dj set of my life so far ..

Diplo - Robot Heart - Free Burn 2021

On Monday afternoon my camp Rise and I headed out for the first time on our artcar. Driving all across Burning Man for five hours was the perfect way to get a sense of the magnitude of this incredible spectacle. Besides my fellow Rise family more and more people hopped on the artcar. The vibe was incredible! And this ended up being one of my favourite memories of the week.

At one point we were cruising deep playa while the sun was setting. The artcar was super packed. Everything is covered in a smooth golden light. People dancing. People holding on to the car on their boards. People cruising along on their bikes. This was such a surreal and magical scene to experience. And int he back of our minds we were all realizing that this was only the first day. This was only the beginning of one of the most special weeks of our lives.

As it all happened very spontaneously, nothing was recorded, and so I decided to re-record part of this memorable journey and share it with you.

Special thanks to Rise for hosting me and for bringing the most incredible art experience to the playa.

If you are about to dive into this set, we invite you to read these words, as they will give deeper meaning to your experience with this musical landscape.

An Orchestra for the Spirit was played live in Black Rock City, riding the Maxa Deer. It was an offering of frequencies and words to bring unity to the Burning Man community that was about to witness the temple rise in flames.

As we believe in synchronicities over coincidences, we are sensitive and deeply touched by the powerful fires that burned for weeks in our beloved California. We contemplated what our best offering could be to support, and realized it is the perfect timing to share hours of music and inspiring poetry, to navigate the mysterious waves of trascendence and trust. 

From our hearts, this set is for everyone feeling the painful part of a shedding skin, a letter lost, a broken heart, or a physical or metaphorical home brought to ashes that now requires full trust to rise again and build a new landscape.

Here’s to new landscapes. 

We allow this orchestra for the spirit to tell the rest.
