When Rich Porter was seven years old, he came up with his first rap name: Young Buck. He was forced to abandon the title with the rise of G-Unit, but ironically enough, this New Haven, CT-based rapper’s style has become a true fusion of Dirty South and East Coast hip-hop paradigms. 
Rich began seriously pursuing music in 2009 through a summer internship at Hot 97 in New York, where he helped to organize album release parties and mixtape shows under the Music Business Department. He gained considerable networking experience there, even socializing with artists like P. Diddy and The Game. Meanwhile, he was studying at Berkeley College in New York, where he gained a Bachelors of Science in Marketing. His free time was occupied teaching himself music engineering, a skill which he markets in the New Haven area. 
In December 2011, Rich teamed up with a local rap group called Rosette City Music (R+C+M), and also started recording in their studio as a solo artist. Rich and R+C+M have been performing throughout the New Haven area, at venues including local nightclubs Pulse, Chazmo’s, Boku’s, and Hartford nightclub Cloud Nine. The group also has an upcoming show at Yale University. Rich has already gained a considerable buzz throughout the area. In fact, he’s even been promoted by 93.7 radio personality Jenny Boom Boom and DJ Craig G. Some of his success can surely be attributed to Rich’s marketing skills: he’s helped R+C+M develop not only as a group of musicians, but also as a brand, with distinct icons and apparel. 
On his singles, Rich lays out short poignant phrases with a delivery sometimes reminiscent of Young Jeezy. His lyrics include the visceral content of street, or “trap-style,” hip-hop with the kind of urgency more often found in traditionally content-poor down South rap. The fact that other listeners from his native city of New Haven can relate to what he raps is a source of pride for him. Perhaps thanks to his strong local fan base, his song “John Madden,” became popular enough on Twitter to be retweeted by the namesake football icon. 
Currently, Rich is working on releasing a full mixtape and on a radio edit for his “John Madden” single. He’s been able to successfully combine staying true to his roots—remaining a voice of the streets—while ambitiously pursuing his music career. It’s a combination of two often-opposing ends that are hard to balance, but Rich couldn’t imagine approaching the industry any other way.
