During a trip to defected in malta the first party was held at a huge outdoor venue called UNO. The main arena wasnt really my thing, so i decided to take a wander around this vast club, i stumbled upon a little stage with the words "staytrue" written in neon behind the dj booth. the music pumping out was incredible! It had harmony, melody, it’s mid tempo, the production stunning, even some oldschool licks.. I recognised the logo straight away but not really paid it much attention, so I promised myself to check it out when home. This mix is the result of that experience. At a time when mediocrity and artifice dilute and diminish dance music, Kid Fonque has formulated the antidote. 
Enter ‘Stay True Sounds’, a independent record label that places good taste over hits and longevity over trends. The label’s creative agenda is simple: to unearth, nurture and present real, evocative music. 
Stay True Sounds became a Defected sub-label in January 2023.. this mix highlights that experience in Malta. The mix is Recorded through a condesa carmen mixer, which enhances the already great quality of these productions. Enjoy!

Whilst being off work since having surgery these last few months  my thoughts have gone to my record collection as im a bit bored of the same old bullshit thats going around at the mo. When Balearic Burgers john asked me to knock up a mix for londons Loose fm radio i thought mmmm something a bit different is needed here. I’ve always been a fan of breakbeat music in all its guises, from oldschool funk, rave D&b, jungle and broken beat, stems from my upbringing with mum and dad’s love for funk and disco no doubt. here we have a 3 hr mix of funk and soul 45s. its was put together for  a bar in singapore who requested a mix of "organic" type music. ive been collecting this format for the last 20 years after getting bored of the house music being played around me at that time. i set out for something a bit different so i purchased a comp by keb darge called legendary deep funk, i was brought up on this type of music so it was a no brainer. so i started playing dads old 45s, james brown, war etc round local pubs and the odd club backroom. one bank holiday monday i was djing in my local boozer in melton mowbray, a local northern soul dealer (john manship) was propping up the bar and came over and said "hey ive a load of stuff like this you might be interested in at my house,  come and have a look" so i took him up on the offer and went round the following sunday afternoon. WOW!  racks of extremely rare northern soul and dusty funk 45s just waiting for me. he set me up on a turntable and gave me a few boxes to go through.   this type of music wasnt really fasionable at the time so after carefully choosing the ones i liked i made him an offer of about 50 quid and bid him farewell. i did this for a few weeks and got real friendly with him. then one sunday he asked me if id heard of keb darge, "of coarse" i replied, well hes playing here at my annual get together of like minded folk do you wanna play? i took him up on the offer and that weekend i djed with and partied with the man himself. he gave me the copy of the "joseph henry" 45 which is on this mix along with his address and phone number to vist his funk night at madam jojos in london.   my mates were not too keen on this "old" music and i couldnt drive so failedto go.  ive included some well knowns so not to over do it with the punters, you will have heard some, youll not heard others. from easy to get to near on impossible to get. sorry if the levels are a bit all over but thats the nature of some of these recordings.
