The first piece I've made in god knows how long, and it was a difficult one. With having less time and motivation to do music, it's left me less able to do stuff when I actually sit down and try. At one point I thought this would be the last piece I ever make, but I have since picked up a little motivation to start on other projects, hopefully you'll see them a little sooner than this.

Suspense On The High Seas

Every time I finish a track and upload here, it seems to be after a years-long hiatus. On every return, my skills have gotten rustier, and it makes things more difficult not just because I struggle to do what I specifically want, but also because I can't make anything *good*. In my daydreams I often think about becoming a musician of some renown, maybe not enough to live off of it, but still demonstrably able to create some great pieces. All the while, even thinking about sitting down to actually make something fills me with anxiety, because it would mean I'd have to reckon with the fact that not only am I miles away from being as good as I think I am, but that I almost certainly never will be either. The fear of being "bad" holds me in place, but the delusion of being "great" has meant I haven't humbled myself and tried to develop my skills in a realistic way. This song is about trying to break away from both of those parts of myself.

Apart from some brainstorming, this song was made from start to finish in 8 days, on a strict deadline to coincide with a separate art project. As such, there's a lot of rough edges, and I probably should've done more vocal takes, but the quick turnaround also means I don't overthink it, and can try and move on to something new rather than labouring for months over something too ambitious. I don't want another hiatus, I want to try and make a go of this.

Inspiration for this was looking out at a very gloomy grey day and trying to capture that melancholy in strings. Diverged a little into plain unsettling over the course of writing it. Timing things was a bitch so that's been slightly rushed for the sake of getting something out.

The Ancient, The Land

The boss theme for Vampyr, for use in my Curse of Strahd d&d campaign. This took months to finish (partly because I was working on The Ancient, The Land concurrently, as well as general DMing stuff) but I'm pretty happy with it. Went for a very different feel to the previous piece: instead of high-paced hype, slow tense and brooding. Pic is one of the 8 different icons I'm using for the Vampyr encounter.
