From icy New York, the original love and lurking anthem "No Letting Go" gets an update from the MSR Crew -- Robzilla, Select and Morsy.

Wayne Wonder's original track dropped in 2003 on the Diwali Riddim and was a massive hit in Jamaica and everywhere else.

The lyrics are a bit mysterious, which Wonder described when it was released.

"I just wrote this song [about a girl] without calling her name in the song because she always said to me, 'You are always [calling] these other girls' names.' I said, 'I don’t have to call your name, I'll just write a song and you can appreciate it.'"

We've taken the vocals to a deeper place, and taken the instrumental straight to 2:30am.

Dutty Artz presents a dancehall EP with tunes from Jamaica’s upper echelon—Tifa, Ward 21, Chan Dizzy, Keida and Trawma—all produced by New York City’s Robzilla.

The EP documents an exciting trip for the New York DJ. He had produced riddims for years in the US but had never visited Jamaica. These songs were recorded on his first trip to the island.

“We were descending into Kingston and I was feeling this nervous anticipation,” he said. “Here’s a culture that’s so vibrant and original, that I worshipped as a kid growing up in Hawaii — an island all the way around the world — and now I’m going to meet and record artists I’ve only heard on tracks.”

Jamaica is vibes.

The title, Too Tall Monster Come for Kingston, is clearly Godzilla, but also about anticipation. And Zilla stands tall at 6’7”, so there’s that.

The project was slated to be a collaboration between Robzilla and fellow producer Matt Shadetek, who accompanied him to Jamaica. Shadetek also recorded songs at Shaggy’s Big Yard Studios in downtown Jamaica, filming the progress for NYC’s Dubspot, an electronic music production school. But a hard drive failure caused Shadetek to lose all his tunes, except for a demo of Tifa’s “I Love You,” a jubilant melody for the summer.

The producers brought a New York style to the riddims, straying from more commercial sounds in the dancehall world. “I wanted to try some darker moods, some minimal tracks where it was all about the drums,” said Zilla. “And the artists told us that they were excited to get on tracks that sounded different.”

The compilation shows love to longtime artists like Ward 21, Tifa and Chan Dizzy, as well as relative newcomers like Keida and Trawma. Ward 21 brings their manic badman game to “Mock and Chat.” Keida is sultry and longing on “Didn’t Save Your Love.” Tifa lays down the law on “So Awesome.”

The riddims, so foundational to Jamaican music culture, are included for both DJs and deejays (Jamaican vocalists are referred to as “deejays” or "singjays"). They’ll also give the listener a different vibe.

As dancehall’s rhythms permeates pop music in the Top 40, we must pay our respects to the originators — the island where musicians have been pounding out these riddims for decades. At its core, the EP is a loving shout-out from Robzilla to Jamaica, a tribute in riddim.
