Recordings of my guitar students, Akheem and Jerano, for a crowdfunding campaign. The successful campaign funded their studies with the Stellenbosch Conservatorium Certificate Programme in 2017. These tracks were originally released to those that funded the campaign but have now been made public.

Composed and performed at the Sonic Mmabolela artist's residency led by  Francisco López and Barbara Ellison. Samples were taken from some of the audio recordings made on the reserve and are played back in the rhythmical patterns made by birds and insects. The rhythms are based on notation of what I heard during the multiple listening sessions we had.

Bat Eared Fox

“Sleep, slap en slurp” describes the different things the elephant can do with their trunk. An elephant calf takes time to master the ability of using their trunk and this is because it is very flexible and serves many uses. The young elephant must take time to work out the various muscle movements that allow him to use his trunk. The music represents the playful nature of the young elephant, where small motives that in the beginning that do not seem to be pertinent parts of the material start to take over as the main musical material. This expresses the way in which the young elephant discovers its confidence in the various abilities of his trunk.

Sleep, Slap, Slurp was composed in collaboration with Kaoru Iwamura in 2018. Three performances were held in 2018 and 2019. The premiere was on the 18th of August in the Cromhouthuis, Amsterdam, as part of the Geelvinck Museum festival.

The Klipspringer (rock-jumper) is an antelope native to Southern Africa and is endangered due to hunting. It is equipped with special hooves making it easy to quickly jump from rock to rock. When it is spotted its defensive reaction is to freeze allowing it to be easily camouflaged within its environment due to the patterns on its coat. It also has very large ears allowing for impeccable hearing. The piece for harp sets up the different types of terrains of the Klipspringer’s habitat. Short motives represent the Klipspringer moving in and out of camouflage. The changing of camouflage is also represented by subtle changes in harmonic and rhythmic density. Whilst growing up in South Africa we spotted the Klipspringer on family holidays. Remembering the Klipspringer brings back the energetic excitement of travelling through the African bush.

Rhino Midden was performed by the trumpet trio Chloë Abbott, Elisabeth Lusche, and Jerome Burns. The work was performed with live electronics and spatialized for the Wave-Field Synthesis Festival 2018 organised by the Game of Life Foundation and the Institute of Sonology.
