The sky was burning with ribbons of a red and orange Florida sunset as I drove slowly across the long, narrow bridge onto St. George Island. "Secret Garden" by Bruce Springsteen was playing on the radio.  I remember hearing Springsteen describe songwriting once as having your "antenna" out for inspiration and "tuning in" to a song that's humming out there in the atmosphere.  If you're not listening, you might miss it. "Everybody Feels Alone" was one of those songs that felt like that to write.

I was heading to a creative project called Write By The Sea, where a group of songwriters, artists, and musicians come together in a house and write and record a full album in one week.

100% of the proceeds of the album go to fund cancer research at the University of Florida.  I loved the whole idea of this.

I was writing alone the second day of the retreat and this song just seemed to fly out. I didn't know then that a few months later, the entire world would be plunged into a pandemic, and loneliness and isolation would be something that hundreds of millions of people across the world would be grappling with.  Somehow, Springsteen's "antenna" analogy resonates with me on this.

Sometimes you don't know why you're writing what you're writing, but it just feels like it needs to be said.  In writing this song, I just had the impression that we are all connected in our loneliness. The fact that everyone deals with this, means we're really not alone.  We are connected. "Everybody Feels Alone" speaks to this idea through the context of a relationship. The song came to me in hazy images and vignettes.  As a writer and artist, I absolutely love solitude and seek it out on a regular basis.  But loneliness is different than solitude.  I hope this song brings some comfort to anyone who may feel isolated or alone right now.  You're not alone.
