This month Carhartt WIP Radio welcomes Cindy Li aka @ciel_dj, a Canadian DJ, producer, event host, and label manager. Ciel has been making waves in Toronto since the launch of her radio show in 2015 titled “Work In Progress.” Following its success, she began throwing a series of progressive parties under the same name in the area.
 
As a producer, Ciel is prolific. In 2017, she released her debut EP “Electrical Encounters“ on UK label @peachdiscs, which was followed by four more EPs and a mini-album "Trojan Horse". Her work is eclectic, featuring four-to-the-floor rhythms as well as more experimental ambient and New Age sounds. In 2019, Li launched the label Parallel Minds (@weareparallelminds) alongside artists like Daniel 58 (@58daniel) and Yohei S, (@whyesss) designed to bring progressive, Toronto-based electronic music artists to the rest of the world. Ciel’s DJ sets are just as dynamic as her own productions, refusing to conform to one particular genre. Shifting from breaks to electro, or minimal techno to jungle, their versatility reflects her love of different sounds.
 
For Carhartt WIP Radio, Ciel has put together a vibrant mix featuring purely original, unreleased material, melding house and break atmospheres, with flashes of techno and deep dub throughout.

As ever, we sat down with this month’s host, discussing how classical music training both helped and hindered her as an artist, the representation of women within electronic music, and her work as an encampment support volunteer. Check the full interview here:

Lawrence S. Williams Jr., better known as L.A. Williams, is an American DJ and producer from Chicago. Founder of the label Chisel, producer of over 27 releases, he has an idiosyncratic take to rhythms, sounds and grooves. 

As a huge fan, both impressed and beguiled, I wanted to shine a light on him. I still am often tripped up trying to blend his tracks while D'Jaying and fit them in a mix soooooooo I had to make this all L.A. mix ᏊˊꈊˋᏊ I spent the last few months collecting nearly all his releases on Discogs to use for the mix; a lot isn't available digitally, and it just felt right. 

I think the best way to hear his unique world and sound is via a tour of his various sides and styles, weaving and roiling, building and bubbling, jacking and smacking.

This year it’s been nice to see James Bangura get the props and respect that he deserves. For many years he has been hustling behind the scenes, releasing music and pushing forward a keen sense of community and collaborative energy which has afforded him many friends and admirers. He is now finally getting the credit that’s long been due.

James has been incredibly busy over the past few years, since 2020 he has released records on the likes of Mister Saturday Night, Art E Fax and World Building.

 
These records have cemented him as a producer but behind the decks James remains a force to be reckoned with.

He is also one of the co founders of the longstanding group ““Black Rave Culture” which has helped champion and pioneer an array of musicians via collaborations and beyond.

Q. How would you describe yourself?
A. A quiet dancer who uses music to connect with others. 

Q. How long have you been a part of the NY music scene? 
A. About 12 years as a dancer but 6 years as a dj. (I was a curious kid who stayed in the street)

Q. Tell us a little bit about this mix.
A. This mix is a little rude, sticky but sweet. I wanted to pull elements from my queer haitian identity and experiences as an NYC native. A lot of the tracks selected are from DJs and artists I look up to. The grooves, syncopation and cuts I mix are to paint a picture of it being 2am in the club, you are pumping & dancing so hard that you are sweating your hair and clothes out but you can’t stop because the music feels too good. In my own way if I was old enough to play at sound factory or the tunnel, this is what it would sound like!
