Mid way through 2013 and multi-faceted brainchild of Timo Mass and Santos, Rockets and Ponies, rides high with its latest signing, Katie Cruel. A refreshingly poetic entree for this eclectic label, Cruel’s City City EP embodies the timeless, classic & intelligent music ethos that Mass and Santos are so keen to champion. 

Making her début as second bassist for Joshua Tree’s Earthlings in 1998, Wendy Rae Fowler dipped her toes into a pool of artistic credibility that has since taken her on an alternative rock journey as fascinating as it is prolific. 

Fowler’s exemplary rock credentials are the sum of her experiences as both accomplished musician and singer-songwriter, honing her craft with visionary stars of American Rock along the way. Following a stint with her Earthlings comrades supporting Queens of the Stone Age on a brief tour of America’s West Coast, Fowler’s dusky, foreboding vocals became the backdrop to two QOTSA tracks, a juncture that led to a meeting of minds with legendary musician Mark Lanegan with whom she would later collaborate on several pieces.

In 2005, a chance meeting with UNKLE’s Richard File would become a defining moment for both artists as their similar influences drew them to an inimitable musical pairing. While treading the traditional industry paradigm led the pair to critical acclaim, ‘We Fell to Earth’ soon etched their sound into the hearts and minds of a wider audience as their tracks featured on a slew of TV dramas including Gossip Girl, The Prisoner and CSI:NY. Later, the pair co-wrote the theme to lauded US crime drama ‘The Killing’.

As clearly as her rich musical heritage speaks for itself, Fowler’s unswerving talent and remarkable experiences have led to this, a point where her gospel, blues and Morricone influences find a soul-baring platform in alter-ego Katie Cruel.

Echoing of Sergio Leone’s Spaghetti Western misadventures, City City is a theatrically dark soliloquy warmed with gnarly guitars and foreboding instrumentals. This provocative piece is both strangely uplifting and dark, a tone that Timo Mass captures with indulgent textures of crackling vinyl and gnarly pistolero electric guitars for his remix. While Timo’s atmospheric remix is pacey and focuses intently on Cruel’s powerful vocal, studio partner Santos cranks off-centre notes and glitchy dynamic percs in a minimal accompaniment with industrial hues. 

Concluding this tumultuous package, This is not a Love Song’s acoustic guitar and ambling drums are the raw, outlandish terrain upon which Cruel’s charismatic vocal scales the pinnacle of despair with filmic results

Crack is premiering a brand new remix from minimal tastemaker Ricardo Villalobos and frequent collaborator Max Loderbauer. The track is taken from a forthcoming remix collection of prolific German jazz drummer Wolfgang Haffner’s work that also includes contributions From Nightmares on Wax, Acid Mondays and Timo Maas, who runs the Rockets & Ponies label alongside Santos.

Villalobos and Loderbauer, who worked together on a celebration of Munich jazz label ECM back in 2011, have contributed a total of three remixes for the collection, two of which are already available on the vinyl version, while this third Meloopdia extension of Haffner’s Melodia will only be available on the digital release, and is as sparse and stretching as you’d expect, twisting and eking out the track with the production duo's distinctive style.

Rolling bongos are set against loose shimmers and rattles which are sporadically interrupted by short sharp keys and haunting, whispering vocals that we hear throughout the EP. One thing I love about these tracks is they are so versatile, I can see them being played around the world at various venues by different artists and I am really looking forward to dropping them on the terrace at DC10 this summer. 

Joining Acid Mondays on 'Chi Ka Pasa,' with two reworks, is the highly talented (and Toi Toi favourite), Ion Ludwig. With releases on Lick My Deck, Meandar Music and Trelik Ion has proved his ability time and time again. His two mix's of Acid Mondays original track 'Chi Ka Pasa' bring new meanings and a new story to the tracks. His 'Progmix II', which will only be released on vinyl, brings a more direct and percussive element to the track, whilst his digital 'Progmantra Mix' creates a hazy atmospheric essence. The addition of distant sirens and a grooving bubbling bassline allow our minds and bodies to move, whilst still controlled by vocals and mystery.

The balance of Acid Mondays and Ion Ludwig is one of delicate, intricate productions with exciting experimentation and musical evolution. The forward thinking aspects on this EP are in line with both my own and Rockets & Ponies style, ambition and creativity. Listen to it, see if we are wrong!"

Rockets and Ponies returns for its latest release of 2015 courtesy of Russian-born Alexey Shlykov, aka Mr. Pepper, titled Phi Ratio. This newest artist to the label has his focus on live instrumentation, fusing it with minimal and techno elements to form a cohesive punchy sound.

The whole EP conjures up the atmosphere of sun-soaked terraces in Ibiza, beginning with Just Do featuring Elisha’s vocals. Roadtested by label boss Timo Maas to “incredible reactions” all summer, the track combines dark piano stabs with repetitive deep atmospheric vocals. Each track is suited to different hours of the day, you could say that Sunflower signifies the rising sun, turning people’s attention from Just Do’s deepness to the floating melody of Glance, which moves in and out of focus, sustained by raw and engulfing tribal percussion. The title track, Phi Ratio twins a rolling bassline with distorted synth sections and to round off proceedings we have Sky Underfoot, perfectly treading the middle-ground between after party and main-room dancing.

While the remixes of Timo Maas’ and Basti’s collaboration together with Eric Volta for Mobilee are climbing the charts and the original of „We Were Riding High“ is still is on heavy rotation, Rockets & Ponies delivers the „If This Was Hate“ EP by Basti Grub. 
The release kicks off with the main track „If This Was Hate“, featuring the Vocals of Masheé, is nothing less than a sweet seduction brought to the dancefloors. No hate, no harsh feelings, just a splendid groover loaded with percussions and vibes. 
Next up is „Rave On Me“, a percussive and dubby 7 minutes roller with those haunting vocals you can’t resist. Time to get lost… 
The release is rounded out by 2 remixes for „If This Was Hate“ from up and coming Aviation Center. Not much is known about this Berlin based producer, who dropped his first release under that alter ego earlier this year, played Fusion and Garbicz Festival live, and delivered a remix in two versions which we could agree on immediately.

Visionary, legend, Jack-of-all-trades, seeker, giver, foodie, wizard…..there are many words to describe Timo Maas. Even after 30 years of dedication to his crowd, his down-to-earth mentality has put him in a unique position in the world of electronic music. His style is difficult to describe, as Timo approaches music with a youthful interest and passion of constant discovery. Thinking of this, you might better understand the approach of his imprint and baby, Rockets & Ponies.  

The label was started in 2008 with a single-sided 17min vinyl release. Yes, you read correctly, a single-sided 17 minute track, of course with an everlasting Intro. After that the Label went silent til 2010, the year Timo started working closely with Santos, who later released his own album on Rockets and Ponies, Maas’ own album „Lifer“ followed shortly after in 2013. Remixes followed by Fur Coat, Tim Green, Youandme, and Maetrik amongst others. 

In 2014 the label released remixes for Wolfgang Haffner, some may say the best German jazz drummer. Legends like Ricardo Villalobos & Max Loderbauer as well as Nightmares on Wax appeared on the label for remix treatments. 

You see, it is a difficult task to describe what Rockets & Ponies is about, maybe it is the easiest to realize that it’s Timo and his open mindset which sets the pace and creates projects and collaborations. 

In 2017 the label released on record store day the remixes for Moby’s „Porcelain", arguably one of Moby’s most popular tracks. James Teej and Timo teamed up for one version, and Sebastian Mullaert (Minilogue) delivered an 14min anthem, which made it into almost everyone’s record bag. 

In 2018 the label started to focus more and more on bringing new artists to the label, such as Of Norway, Basti Grub and Aviation Center, and as approaches it’s 10th Anniversary, the label is undergoing another rebirth….a period of relentless focus on surprises.
