The Art Of Us (TAOU) begins with the story of Blair French, a cosmic messenger raised in a house of 7 on the outskirts of a historic city. From dancing at mom's disco parties at a young age, to releasing rap tapes in middle school, winning best soundtrack for the multi-award-winning film DETROPIA and hitting the Billboard charts with his Pure Sounds of Michigan compilation; ultimately French found a home in the world of all things Detroit, Pan-African, Balearic, and ambient. TAOU is his first instrumental LP under his own name, (despite a 25 year career), bringing together his closest musical compatriots.

Blair's diverse production shines on this immersive 14 track release, transcending organic/electronic, uptempo/downtempo, and light/dark, tapping in heavyweight characters including Pathe Jassi, John Arnold, Craig Huckaby, Todd Modes, Kaylan Waterman, Peter Croce, Eddie Logix, Paul Randolph, 2040, Michael Jurczak and more.

Sonically, TAOU holds peak-hour Deep Cosmic Afro House freak outs ("Faded By The Sun", "Celebration Ritual", "F O A", "Chest Drum"), blunted beatdown cuts ("Stay Detroit", "Jeans", "Drop Ceiling Shuffle", "River Crossing"), and soulful R&B and Afrobeat compositions ("Honey Rooftops", "Genes", "Space Time Curvature").

Rocksteady Disco is extremely excited to release this multi-faceted EP from one of American dance music’s most prolific musical minds: JKriv. First up, is “Aguaxirê”— a deep Afro-Brazilian house cut in praise of the Yoruban orisha Oya. Full of moody Detroit-style pads, driving percussion, acid basslines, live trumpet (performed by Escort mainstay Nathan Warner), and an expertly plucked sample, this 9 minute odyssey is crafted for ecstatic dance floor use. Moving to the B side, we hear J rework the música popular brasileira classic “Ive Brussel” into a pool-side day party anthem, complete with a full overdub of the bassline by J with his Fender Jazz bass. Following that is a traditional deejay edit of “Deep Cove View”, a breezy and chilled out Brazilian jazz fusion cut with plenty of piano, slap bass, and vocal scatting. J flexes his production, performance, and arrangement prowess here, delivering 3 tracks ready for the party, the after hours, or the after-after hours.

First up is “Life Is A Circle”, a peak hour Philadelphia Disco classic, remastered and extended in all the right places for maximum ecstatic dance floor use. Rounding out the A side is “What Can I Do For You?”, a Gallery-era R&B proto-disco cut with a massive drum break that never got the 12” treatment that it deserved until now. On the flip Peter delivers some dance floor meditation, complete with tons of drums and dub poetry for the heads that dream of a better day. One of Detroit’s brightest young house producer is Jaco Matthews, and his vinyl release on Rocksteady Disco is long overdue. “Lesson One” leads off the EP, a peak hour deep afro house track highlighting Jaco’s brilliant drum programming. “Snacks” follows, a bouncy and swinging composition with stuttering vocals and enough jack to make Robert Owens proud. On the flip is Jaco’s massive remix of Peter Croce’s “Revival”, full of moody pads, uplifting piano, driving 909, and a timeless message for our strange times.

Rocksteady Disco's newest recruit is Eddie Logix. He's been at the heart of the Detroit underground for over 15 years, most recently with his Technically Yeah live hardware nights, a grip of ambient and hip-hop releases, engineering for Assemble Sound. He’s one half of left-field funk-hop duo Mega Powers with Pig Pen, and of BLKSHRK alongside Blair French, who first appeared on Rocksteady Disco back in 2016 on ...For Todd.

Placebo Palace is Eddie's first solo dance EP, combining all of this experience into a diverse offering for discerning dance floors. The EP leads with “Que Locos”, a tropical house banger driven by brass and Latin-Jazz piano. “Baby Girl” rounds out the A side, with a dusty R&B vocal sample coupled with a massive and unexpected bassline. The B side is darker and deeper, starting with the frantic Afro-Jazz-Deep House “Sunday Palaver”. Closing the EP is “Bottle Rocket”, a psychedelic surf rock-tinged disco-not-disco chugger, with live guitar by Daniel Monk and electric bass by stphn-b. More forward thinking music from Detroit via Rocksteady Disco!

Rocksteady Disco closes the sweltering season with the aprop​os ​Ice Accountant EP by MAN VS INDIAN MAN, sonically chronicling the transition from summer to fall in Detroit. Featuring Detroit artists ​Evan Haywood and Ian Finkelstein​ (the latter of Scott Grooves’ Overdubs keyboard fame) as ​MAN VS INDIA​N MAN, ​Ice Accountant boasts Rocksteady Disco’s most high-profile lineup from its releases to date.

The EP kicks off with LA’s Electro Pharaoh himself, ​Egyptian Lover​, living up to the track’s chilly title, complete with his signature 808 and vocoder stylings. Detroit’s Disco au Courant ​Pontchartrain​ grabs the baton for the next cut with an uplifting remix that will have you wishing summer would never end. It sees him on the keyboard and a special, exclusive synth solo from Finkelstein.

Hailing from Itajubá, Brazil, ​Table Daddy​ kicks off the B-Side with his dirty, bittersweet yet beautiful and melodic Techno interpretation that truly flips and distorts the source material in curious, compelling and unexpected ways; fans of Kyle Hall’s Wild Oats and Jay Daniels’ Watusi High are sure to feel this remix.

MVIM’s original version comes in at Track 4, finally getting the vinyl release it deserves. Here the listener is treated to all of Haywood’s soulful vocals, coupled with Finkelstein’s cryptic synthesizer work. Rounding out the five-track journey is ​ASHOD​’s “Cloud Nine.” A sublimely executed downtempo, slomo production that perfectly incorporates Haywood’s arresting dubbed-out vocals, it’s well-suited as an after-hours closing tune.

Vinyl purchasers will receive a download code for ​Peter Croce​’s extended mix of the original track. Here the Rocksteady Label boss—channeling his inner Tom Moulton—takes the proverbial razor and tape, extending the dramatic original into an airy, DJ-friendly version that is reminiscent of Cut Copy meets STRFKR meets Flight Facilities.

A release party is being held at MotorCity Wine in Detroit on September 7th, featuring live sets from Ian Finkelstein and Evan Haywood, and DJ sets from Pontchartrain b2b Peter Croce. Entry is free, and there will be record and merch giveaways.

Peter Croce takes the baton back from Blair French for Rocksteady Disco's 9th release entitled Agape. It's vision is similar to Standing Still Is An Illusion, with Peter's unique take on this Afro-Brazilian deep house three-tracker. The a-side holds "Agape (Love Wins)", a deep and emotive house cut, with driving drums and lush strings that tease until they climax. Kicking off the b-side is "Maracatu Detroit", an upbeat love letter to Peter's home city produced through a bouncy Brazilian-funk lens; a track that is sure to bring a smile to the dancers. It was Memorial Day Weekend 2016, and the sun shined bright over the Detroit River. Pontchartrain stepped up to the decks at the Red Bull stage at Movement Electronic Music Festival donning his infamous "Detroit vs. Itself" t-shirt. His first song through the Rane rotary mixer was a dubplate made specifically for his set: “Afterlife”. It’s a brilliantly executed daytime disco rework that warrants the praise of summer anthem that it’s earning. 

On the flip is “Pool”, an equally sunny slomo beatdown rework from Blair French. It's a delightful blend of cerebral and soulful, and is finally getting a release after being originally championed by Peter Croce on his Le Mellotron Paris set back in early 2018. 

This 7" is pressed heavy and cut loud at 33.3 RPM with a normal non-dinked hole.

Rocksteady Disco is extremely excited to release this multi-faceted EP from one of American dance music’s most prolific musical minds: JKriv. First up, is “Aguaxirê”— a deep Afro-Brazilian house cut in praise of the Yoruban orisha Oya. Full of moody Detroit-style pads, driving percussion, acid basslines, live trumpet (performed by Escort mainstay Nathan Warner), and an expertly plucked sample, this 9 minute odyssey is crafted for ecstatic dance floor use. Moving to the B side, we hear J rework the música popular brasileira classic “Ive Brussel” into a pool-side day party anthem, complete with a full overdub of the bassline by J with his Fender Jazz bass. Following that is a traditional deejay edit of “Deep Cove View”, a breezy and chilled out Brazilian jazz fusion cut with plenty of piano, slap bass, and vocal scatting. J flexes his production, performance, and arrangement prowess here, delivering 3 tracks ready for the party, the after hours, or the after-after hours.

Hailing from Brooklyn, JKriv (real name: Jason Kriveloff) is a producer, DJ, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, co-label head of Razor-N-Tape Records, and co-producer/guitarist of live disco band Escort. Throughout his illustrious musical career which spans nearly 20 years, his tracks have garnered plays from superstar DJ’s such as Disclosure, Derrick Carter, and Pete Tong. As a DJ himself, he’s shared bills with the likes of Todd Terje, Session Victim, and Dimitri from Paris just to name a few. JKriv’s experience playing in bands translates over to his solo work, as he takes an organic approach to production, playing analog instruments (guitar, bass, keyboards, synth) on many of his releases. His catalog is extensive and showcases his seemingly effortless knack for blending modern and vintage club-oriented sounds.

His latest release is “Aguaxirê”, the title track of his upcoming three-track EP of the same name coming out on Rocksteady Disco on May 17th. Kriv utilizes an array of synthesizers and samplers on “Aguaxirê” to lay out the melodies, Afro-Brazilian rhythms and vocal samples heard throughout the 9-minute track. He enlists professional trumpeter, and fellow Escort band-mate Nathan Warner to deliver the lush trumpet section of his brilliant horn arrangement. JKriv could not have chosen a better label than Rocksteady Disco to release his EP. Rocksteady Disco is a Detroit-based boutique record label and party series founded in 2014 by Peter Croce. The label has steadily released Disco, House, and Techno cuts tinged with African and Brazilian influences over the last five years. Rocksteady Disco states that it aims to take its listeners on a “life-affirming journey that engages the heart, body and mind” and its latest release “Aguaxirê” does exactly that.

The track opens with the moody chords that underlie its entirety. Then comes the vocal sample, which JKriv selects and blends in exquisitely. It features a call and response style vocal in a foreign language which sounds like an African dialect. It matches the vibe of his emotionally striking instrumental almost too well. The exotic rhythms are the backbone of the song, constantly driving it forward, but when the acid bassline comes in at around the halfway point, “Aguaxirê” really starts to take flight. Six minutes into the song, Warner’s live trumpeting comes in and the track soars. It’s an epic climax that JKriv built up to gradually and masterfully. Rocksteady Disco's newest recruit is Eddie Logix. He's been at the heart of the Detroit underground for over 15 years, most recently with his Technically Yeah live hardware nights, a grip of ambient and hip-hop releases, engineering for Assemble Sound. He’s one half of left-field funk-hop duo Mega Powers with Pig Pen, and of BLKSHRK alongside Blair French, who first appeared on Rocksteady Disco back in 2016 on ...For Todd.

Placebo Palace is Eddie's first solo dance EP, combining all of this experience into a diverse offering for discerning dance floors. The EP leads with “Que Locos”, a tropical house banger driven by brass and Latin-Jazz piano. “Baby Girl” rounds out the A side, with a dusty R&B vocal sample coupled with a massive and unexpected bassline. The B side is darker and deeper, starting with the frantic Afro-Jazz-Deep House “Sunday Palaver” that we have featured today. Closing the EP is “Bottle Rocket”, a psychedelic surf rock-tinged disco-not-disco chugger, with live guitar by Daniel Monk and electric bass by stphn-b.

It appears that copies of this EP are flying fast! Placebo Palace is set to hit stores January 14th and you can pre-order the record via bandcamp.

Blair's diverse production shines on this immersive 14 track release, transcending organic/electronic, uptempo/downtempo, and light/dark, tapping in heavyweight characters including Pathe Jassi, John Arnold, Craig Huckaby, Todd Modes, Kaylan Waterman, Peter Croce, Eddie Logix, Paul Randolph, 2040, Michael Jurczak and more.
