The art of the Dj has always been about providing a new context for the music: a german electronic track being played for b-boys in the Bronx or a lush Philadelphia string driven disco tune enhanced by a drum machine and causing havoc on the dancefloor of the Warehouse in Chicago - these are statements made by djs who liked to say that music knows no borders, both in terms of time and space. That's the art of Rocky Marsiano too, a veteran portuguese DJ, with an extensive resume - behind the decks, grabbing a mike or handling the mpc. 

Rocky has travelled a lot through music: to New Orleans, to Brazil, to New York and Philly and beyond. His latest project, Meu Kamba, was an lp filled with african grooves from former portuguese colonies. It was an exercise built on memory and identity, but also with eyes and ears firmly planted in the future. Africa is part of our musical DNA he defended through his productions, sampling heavily from angolan, cape verdean and mozambican vinyl. Now, he presents two re-edits that point to Angola and Cape Verde, to semba and funaná, and offer a new present to the dancefloor. Once again, like Frankie Knuckles did in Chicago, the TR 909 works as the glue that holds everything together, bringing these old grooves up to date, providing them with a new context and, more importantly, keeping the music alive with new audiences, new dancefllors, new dancers. The art of the dj is also the art of keeping time, of playing the right tune at the exact moment. And the time of "Ritinha" and "Djó Djó" is now!

Lisbon is a puzzle of images, a labyrinth of sounds, a great landscape for the most improbable encounters, a European capital filled with Africa. This is the starting point for Meu Kamba Três, Rocky Marsiano’s seventh album. 
The heavily sample-based production methods that were so present in the sounds of previously released Meu Kamba (2014) and Meu Kamba Vol. Dois (2016) are now naturally replaced and upgraded by his beatsmith touch with a fresh approach. 

Meu Kamba Três was recorded between Lisbon and Luanda, Amsterdam and Maputo, featuring collaborations with artists such as Sagaz, Selma Uamusse (Mozambique), Prince Wadada (Angola), Milton Gulli (Mozambique) and Karlon and instrumentalists such as the percussion master Toni and Nelson da Costa (veteran guitar player from Guiné-Bissau who has played for many Guinean and Cape Verdean bands in the 80s and 90s). Also featuring on the album is Sr Alfaiate, one of Portugal’s most notorious scratch DJs. 

With Lisbon’s very own vibes as a source of main inspiration – where semba and funana, samba, kuduro and kizomba mix with hip-hop, fado, soul and house into hybrid musical forms that make us travel to the past and to the future – Meu Kamba Três is an ambitious album by Rocky Marsiano and to that effect he has brought forward all of his past as a hip-hop head, producer, DJ, MC and above all a rhythm lover. So that he could musically transmit the sense of community that has always been so present throughout his 20+ year long career into new tracks for the dancefloor.

At the start of 2020 a fellow DJ/vinyl collector, Tom B, invited me to come and spin at the March edition of legendary Avenida Brasil, one of the longest running BR-themed parties in Paris. He also challenged me to perform a live set on my MPC, specifically made for that night. Unfortunately a few weeks later everything was cancelled. But I kept on making beats, while sampling my Brazilian records. Weeks later this
album was born… It is the most personal album yet, it is an homage to my family’s Brazilian heritage and a dedication to my mother.

When I was still a small child, some of my very first music memories were the many faces of MPB artists “smiling” at me from the covers of my mother’s vinyl collection. I was born in Zagreb to a Portuguese mother (who was raised in Rio de Janeiro) and a Croatian father and grew up listening to Chico Buarque, Elis Regina, Caetano Veloso, Milton Nascimento but also to other, less worldly known but very important artists whose brilliant music my mother collected in the early 70s. This collection of 10” records called “História da Música Popular Brasileira - MPB” was at the time released by Edições Abril and was distributed and sold at many newspaper stands all over Brazil. My mom, being a true music lover, bought the whole collection. Not long after, when her family was moving back from Brazil to Portugal, all the records travelled by ship with her. The same year after marrying my dad, she moved to Zagreb taking again the collection with her. Another journey the records made
was when our family moved to Lisbon in 1992, with a one year stop in Rome.

Now, I am very happy to have the collection with me here in Amsterdam. They are part of my family's multi- cultural heritage and a living proof that great music can stand the test of time.

Rocky Marsiano is the instrumental/beats project of the Portuguese old school producer/MC/DJ D-Mars. "The Pyramid Sessions", its criticaly highly acclaimed debut album (Loop:Recordings) from 2005, with a strong jazz influence, opened doors for the projecy to start performing live. With the releases of its 2nd album (Outside the Pyramid) and 3rd albums (Back To The Pyramid) D-​Mars further explored jazz fusion by adding elements of soul/funk and Brazilian music (his mother was raised in Rio).​ The fourth album "Back To The Pyramid" was entirely produced in Amsterdam, where D-Mars is now living, and is a tribute to his mother's Brazilian records. The album was released on vinyl only as a way to show his respect to that format and culture.
The latest release "Meu Kamba" brings a very new element to Rocky's production: music from Angola, Cabo Verde and Mozambique. Receiving a lot of international praise, "Meu Kamba" is a colourful journey through the great rhythms from these three african countires.
﻿Rocky Marsiano has performed at all the main venues and festivals in Portugal, (p.e., Lux Frágil, Mexe Fest, Gulbenkian, Lisbon Casino) and was selected by BBC1's DJ and music ambassador Gilles Peterson as part of his night at Casa da Música (Porto). He also DJs regularly at some of Lisbon's main clubs (Radio-Hotel, Music Box, etc.)
