Vortices is a composition for alto saxophone and prepared piano. This piece has been created for Alto Saxophonist Kyle Landry for the Composer/Performer Symbiosis Seminar. A drawing of a vortex created for the first draft of this composition is the cause of both, the title Vortices, and the main musical idea. The result is a composition for Alto Saxophone and Prepared Piano that explodes the use of acoustics between both instruments creating a world of sonorities. The piano is used as a reverb device throughout the composition. This is achieved by having the sustain pedal down during the whole composition and having the saxophonist play into the piano, creating reverb from the strings of the piano. The prepared piano uses different tools to create changes of timbre. The tools I am using for the prepared piano are the following: percussion mallets, magnetic devices called ebows, ping-pong balls, etc. Indeterminacy is an important element in this composition. The visual aspect of the piano is very important, and it is the center of interaction of this piece.

From the liner notes: "Modernism scares people. Is it because it’s new? That can’t be the whole explanation, because everybody likes to discover new things, right? Maybe it's the amount of newness. While discovery always involves a degree of unfamiliarity, modernism can drive really far into unfamiliar territory, becoming distant from any known landmarks. So much unfamiliarity can be scary.

It can even be alienating. The unpopularity of Revolution 9 (by one of the world’s most popular bands) is the evidence that the Beatles' experimentation with found sound, tape loops, and studio technology pushed their fans away. Revolution 9 is modernist because it is a song that’s not a song, something so unfamiliar that it not only breaks with the past, but also breaks its own category.

Varèse’s Poème électronique must have also seemed like a categorical contradiction: poetry created on machines?! The piece—no less than its title—expresses his modernist zeal through never-had-a-past electronic sounds. 'The world is changing, and we change with it. The more we allow our minds the romantic luxury of treasuring the past in memory, the less able we become to face the future and determine the new values in it.'"

I made this track a few years ago at our house/venue Bay Area 51 in San Francisco, where my studio bordered our backyard and the best thing in the world was to jam some uplifting but slighty melancholy tracks and soak in some afternoon sun.  This track is a direct product of those times, so i decided share it outside of an official release and perhaps it will find a place in your summertime.  Hope you enjoy >

Welcome back to our new mix and feature program. CSS072 features Detroit, Pure Rave. Pure Rave, a collective based in Detroit, Michigan, is an ongoing experiment in "chance dance". Using various prepared turntables, "damaged" records, the occasional drum machine, the effect is an indeterminate arrangement of patterns and rhythmic sonic collage. Real-time experimentation with the goal of hitting your pleasure center for whatever your brain thinks is interesting. This 90 minute mix is composed by using various records on two prepared turntables and one cdj to create asynchronous loops and mixing those down together to make the "tracks" you hear on the mix.

Pure Rave

Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Roco Córdova is a vocalist, composer, producer and improviser based in the San Francisco Bay Area. They possess a B.Mus. in Composition from the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music and an M.A. in Composition from Mills College in Oakland, California. They have studied under the guidance of Carlos Carrillo, Manuel Ceide, Roscoe Mitchell, Zeena Parkins and James Fei. As a singer they have trained under the instruction of countertenor Paul Flight and have participated in vocal advancement workshops with Meredith Monk. 
Their music has been described as "slow-boiling, apparently timeless" with "an odd momentum of its own" (The Washington Post). Cordova's work fuses diverse influences with electronic media, chance operations, gradual processes, noise, improvisation, and timbral techniques of composition. Their compositions explore intersections between literature, visual arts and sound. Voice is at the core of their music making: they incorporate extended techniques like throat singing, overtone singing, falsetto, yodeling, and vocal clicks and pops into live performances that emphasize the electronic processing of these sounds. Recently, they have been focused in exploring the intersection between their practice as vocalist-improviser with electronic dance musics.
As a touring vocalist and improviser with The Art Ensemble of Chicago, they have performed in venues including but not limited to: The Tennessee Theater in Knoxville, Tennessee; The Pritzker Pavilion in Chicago, Illinois; SESC Pompéia in São Paulo, Brazil; The Kennedy Center in Washington D.C.; and the Maison des Arts in Créteil, France.Roco recently soloed and performed the role of Pilate with the California Bach Society in their 2022 performances of the St. John Passion. They have also collaborated with artists like Monopiece, Dirt and Copper, Theresa Wong, GeraldCaselDance, La Macacoa and Danistha Rivero.
