The kalimba as we know it is a simple diatonic instrument you can instantly play with. It has a cosy, innocent vibe that connects instantly. We have rebuilt the kalimba in a sampler to add our electronic arsenal of lofi EFX. We wanted to automize, chop, pitch, bend, delay and filter the kalimba to its extends without ending up in a loose experimental space. Out came the very chilled tune "colimba“.
But have we got in touch with the original mbira spirit of the instrument's origins rooted in the African Culture? After listening to the original polyphonic and polyrhythmic mbira music we were pretty much surprised and felt delighted to hear how the ancient mbira healing spirit also shines in the context of our music of pianos, guitars and heavy electronic lofi processing.

"Warm Flicker" is the first single from the first rocomoco album "Into The Blue" (September 2021)

The track combines downtempo music and lofi hip hop. It is inspired by the vibe of Nineties music from Kruder and Dorfmeister, Rockers Hifi or Guru's Jazzmatazz and you will hear the crunch and the dust of nowadays lofi hip hop productions.  

One of the samples contains the shout out “Keep it warm flicker” which leads to the main topic of the track. Warm Flicker sentimentally looks back to real live moments when the flame of a candle and a good friend by your side had been enough to make you feel at home in the world. Today the computer screens have replaced the candles. Even tho it is a cold type of light, LED monitors are able to evoke cozy illusions of social participation. They are keeping us entertained and they are holding us back from asking and overthinking too much.

“Siren, in Greek mythology a creature, half bird, half woman, who lured sailors to their doom with his sweet song” (Encyclopaedia Britannica) “Serenity of the Sirens” is the new joint single with The Hidden from the forthcoming album “Electric Paradise” (May 17th). The track comes with a serene 90ies downtempo vibe straight from the bottom of the ocean while the drums are merging Hip Hop with a programmed CR-78 Bossa Nova. We will also perform the track live at the Gallery “Reflektor Neukoelln” in Berlin within the “Electric Paradise” album release night (May 17th, 19:30 C E T) where we want to create an inspiring space through a blend of texts, images, videos, and, most importantly, music focusing the unconscious, emotional worlds in the relationships between humans, machines, and Artificial Intelligence. We hope that we can escape the special serenity and seductive abilities of machine learning applications as cunningly and calmly as Homer did on his odyssey, tied to the mast of his ship.

3:30pm w/The Hidden

"Wonderland" sits somewhere between downtempo indie pop and chillhop. Call and response melodies from Japanese kotos and electric guitars are telling tales from beautifully strange and undetected places. 

It's the second single from the upcoming EP „3:30pm“ by rocomoco + The Hidden. The single has been released January the 13th by Aviary Bridge Records. The first single "3:30pm" (Nov 2019) got good responses from blogs like Le Visiteur, Online, The Word Is Bond and VibeGods. Stereofox wrote: "Yeah, this isn't your average Lo-fi track". The tune went top ten on Hypem and gained over 50 lofi hiphop and chillhop playlists on Spotify.

"Wonderland" also comes with a video that relates to the "Roaring Twenties". Europe connected by luxury trains. Martin Gropius and Le Corbusier designed visions of functional and cozy homes for all. A brave new world of art and futurism and the metropolis cities played out as hedonistic amusement parks. "Wonderland" is about these golden vibes we are still hooked on so much.

Wonderland w/The Hidden

We are closing the chapter „3:30pm“ with an intrumental bonus of „I feel so much better“. The production of this track started December 2018 and we managed to finish it February 2020. That was a long journey but it paid out in our ears: now everything is in balance. The beat is lush and the vibes are truly warm and chilled. Summer.

We are happy that we can look back on a long and lasting creative journey with Dan McRae from Southampton who calls himself The Hidden. When we started the track Dan wrote: "The thought behind the title 'Cat's In The Basket' is the opposite of the saying 'The cat's out of the bag' which means a secret has been revealed, so the idea of 'Cat's in the basket' is to mean keeping a secret or hiding something. So I quite like the idea of the cat being a symbol for something private"
