The Rodolfo Rivas Project has always been about talking to interesting individuals and learning from their experiences. Since I am a lawyer working in International Trade, Intellectual Property, and Dispute Settlement, many of my guests work in these areas. 

However, I’ve also featured filmmakers because film is a passion of mine, CEOs because I also dabble in entrepreneurship, and other professionals, with the idea of covering some of my interests. As this project grows, I look forward to including writers, scientists, athletes, politicians, and many other industry leaders.

Since I am based in Switzerland, and Swiss culture is closely linked to watches, I plan to talk to many individuals in the industry to learn more about the different facets of the industry.

The first of hopefully many guests in the watch world is none other than Mr. Roy Davidoff, a celebrity dealer in the watch community.

Roy and his brother are based in Geneva out of their shop in the Old Town. Roy has become a point of reference, and his shop is an essential stop for any watch enthusiast visiting Geneva before a necessary appointment.

Roy has worked in the industry for decades and made a name for himself as one of the foremost experts on the Omega Speedmaster. But since then, he has branched out into everything related to watches.

In our conversation, we covered how he got into watches, his views on the ever-changing industry, the Omega x Swatch Moonswatch collaboration, and if the balance of power in the watch industry can be altered. During my visit, I was a fly on the wall and saw with delight how he operates, and believe me when I say he is working 24x7.

Season 5 Episode 08 – Nir Baranga, Director, Trade in Services and Investment Department at the Foreign Trade Administration of the Ministry of Economy, Israel.

Nir is one of my earliest colleagues at the Ministry. We started around the same time and remain kicking and screaming. He is a frontline negotiator leading bilateral, plurilateral, and multilateral services negotiations for Israel.

When he visits Geneva, we usually talk about many things besides trade, and podcasts are one of them. We have wanted to do this podcast for some time, but fitting it into our busy schedules has been challenging.

Luckily, during his last visit to the World Trade Organization (WTO) for the ongoing Joint Initiative on e-commerce, we managed to find some time to talk and record this interesting conversation covering his professional career and how his career path has changed a couple of times, and how in hindsight it all makes sense.

He also provides an insightful view into what it means to be an International trade negotiator going back to the Trade in Services Agreement negotiation (TiSA), which was one of his first experiences in International trade negotiations.

We could have also talked about many other things, but perhaps those conversations are left for another episode.

Season 5 Episode 10 – Willy Alfaro, Director, Vision & Strategy at the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Willy has been in Geneva and the WTO since the GATT days and has had a vibrant experience across the WTO, serving in different capacities across various divisions.

Everyone knows Willy, and this is because he is a very knowledgeable and friendly person who, in terms of the Multilateral Trading System, has seen it all.

We discussed some influences in his decision to study at the University of Geneva, how he got involved in International Trade, how the GATT has evolved into the WTO, and how the organization has changed. We also discuss some of the challenges ahead and how trade is part of the solution.

Season 5 Episode 11. Tayutic Mena, Counsellor, Permanent Mission of Costa Rica to the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Tayutic is a seasoned veteran among the delegates dealing with the WTO. I have been working with him for many years, and we have worked together in many negotiations, including the ITA expansion, EGA, and TiSA. Since then, he has become a celebrity in the WTO, thanks to his involvement in agriculture, a topic that is close to his heart, and by the way he describes it, it should be close to everyone's heart. 

In our conversation, we covered a lot; from his background, growing up in Costa Rica, he talks about Costa Rica's strong interest in multilateralism and how they have decided to double down and be heard across all multilateral initiatives, successfully punching above its weight.

Our conversation was insightful, refreshing, and fun!

Season 5 Episode 12. Kilian Riedhof, Award-winning Filmmaker known for "Gladbeck" (2018), “You Will Not Have My Hate" (2022), and his latest "Stella. A Life." (2023), which stars Berlinale best actress award-winner Paula Beer.

Kilian is a multi-talented Director and writer who studied at the Hamburg Film School. He was at the Zurich Film Festival to present his latest film, and that is when I had the pleasure to sit down with him to discuss his career, his craft, his latest film, and also a bit about what he is working on next. 

As you know, I love films, and I enjoyed talking about films, techniques, storytelling, and some of the challenges faced when making a film and working as a filmmaker.

Kilian is a master of his craft and a delightful individual. I highly recommend watching his film, which has been a long-gestating project that he finally got to make.

This is the first episode of our sixth season, and I could not think of a better guest than Ralph Ossa, who has been serving as Chief Economist for the WTO for over a year after a long career as an academic.

Ralph walks us through his career, describing his interests, motivations, and some of the challenges he encountered along the way. The way he describes it clearly explains the evolution in his career and how he is driven by a deep commitment to creating meaningful change by thinking about some of the most critical issues we currently face in the World and trying to inform and bring solutions to them.

Continuing with our second season, I had the pleasure of hosting Miguel Villamizar, who is likely among one of the most well-liked individuals in International Trade. When you meet him, you will know what I am talking about, and after listening to this conversation, you will likely agree with me.

I didn't know this, but Miguel has been listening to the podcast for some time, so having him as a guest was a pleasure. I have wanted to invite him for a while; I am glad I finally did!

I was happy to stroll down memory lane and listen to Miguel's journey. We covered how he got interested in International Economic Law after briefly flirting with Marine Biology! There is also much more he talks about, including the formative experience coaching the wunderkind team at the John Jackson Moot Court and how he got to the World Trade Organization.

Season 6, Episode 3. Ana Laura Lizano is Minister Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of Costa Rica to the World Trade Organization (WTO).

This is episode 70 if you are keeping track. I can't believe it has been 70 already!

I do these for myself because I love doing them, but it is great to hear when people reach out to say they enjoy them. Thanks to everyone who has reached out; I really appreciate it.

Ana has worked in International Trade for many years, including in the private sector, the government, and in diplomacy in Geneva for the last few years. This is where I met her. Although we have been in the same circles for several years, I haven't worked much with her, so I looked forward to our conversation.

We talked about International Trade, Diplomacy, the work she has been doing in the Trade and Environmental Sustainability Structured Discussions (TESSD) at the WTO, and also about movies, which I want to explore further with my guests.

Marisa Goldstein is an experienced lawyer who has worked in the Legal Affairs Dvision at the WTO for many years, and she has certainly left her mark.

I have known her since the beginning of my career in International Trade, and she is a well-known and well-liked figure in the community. We have collaborated a couple of times and even raced in the same races.

In our conversation, we delved into her career, law school, international relations, and the fascinating journey that led her to Geneva. We also explored the impactful work she's been doing at the WTO, including the upcoming 22nd edition of the John H. Jackson Moot Court Competition with the European Law Students' Association (ELSA). We discussed the challenges she faced, the lessons she learned, and her advice for aspiring international trade practioners. Her career path is truly inspiring.

My conversation with Marisa was a delightful and insightful experience. I am thrilled to share it with you and I'm sure you'll find it as engaging as I did!
