Progressive/Deep House - part 3

As Anton MAKe continued his assault on the underground dance scene, "Bulletproof" marked a new chapter in the Russian artist's arsenal. After a successful first volume in July 2020 in which five original tracks shone a light on Anton's skill and creativity, "Bulletproof, Vol. 2" continues the series with a trio of original tracks and a pair of high-class remixes.

Opening with the heavy rhythmic overtones of "LucyLidia", a grooved bassline quickly takes hold while percussive effects pan the stereo spectrum. A heavily modulated synth lead makes its presence felt while delicate motifs swirl hypnotically as the track evolves, reaching its melodic zenith at the breakdown before dropping back into the dense rhythmic forest in the second half. "Rotas" continues the strong percussive narrative, paired with a heavy beat. A glorious array of sumptuous pads and ‘rise and fall' arpeggio soon picks up the pace, reaching an octave pitched crescendo at the mid-point. Pausing for breath, all melodic elements then combine once more with the rhythmic backdrop to mesmerising effect in the second half. The third original track sees "Sator" make a powerful statement with a heavy, white noise infused bass pattern before complementary pads and symphonic strings filter into sonic range. Gloriously evocative, a glittering array of melodies wax and wane in gated and glissando fashion to continue a powerful and mature production narrative running through Anton's work.

Christian Wedekind needs little in the way of introduction. To the underground music fraternity, the German artist's D-Nox moniker has been a byword for quality for almost two decades, both in solo guise and with Brazilian star, Beckers. After an impressive Proton Music debut, remixing Juan Deminicis' "Life on the Moon" with ZAC, D-Nox now returns with a solo reworking of "Denouement" that bristles with dynamic verve and rhythmic prowess. Driving forward with a powerful running bassline, syncopated plucks and clever percussive integration pave the way for the central arpeggio in Anton MAKe's original to make its presence felt with a flowing ease. Delicious strings gently pulsate against the heavy beat before a new bassline makes its play at the breakdown before rhythm and melody join forces in the second half.

Sebastian Sellares has caused quite a stir on Proton Music since a debut remix of Hot TuneiK's "Circles of You" in June 2019. October 2020 then saw Sellares make his full EP debut for the label via his "Jinsei / Zen State" offering. Twin tracks of the highest quality led the way, complemented by a pair of remixes from heavyweights, Nick Muir and Matias Chilano. Now returning for the first time in 2021, the Sebastian Sellares interpretation of "Denouement" retains the original's intensity as a swathe of new production material echoes Vangelis, adding layers of undulating synths. Building with effervescent ease, traces of Anton MAKe's track are felt while the second half hits new heights through a combination of rhythmic and melodic interplay, rising in hypnotic intensity to reach an impressive conclusion.

A quintet of new productions find Anton MAKe, D-Nox and Sebastian Sellares squarely hitting the target in "Bulletproof, Vol. 2".

After a 2018 debut for PHW Elements, Sebastian Sellares has made increasingly sizeable waves with his smooth and unique musical style. Already seeing his music signed to an array of high-profile imprints including onedotsixtwo, UV and Or Two Strangers, Proton Music's 'Zen State / Jinsei' was a further notable highlight in October 2020 including remixes from Matias Chilano and Bedrock's Nick Muir.

The title-track opener is a gloriously atmospheric offering that builds gently over a rhythmic foundation of rolling top-line groove and pounding beat. Filtered pads soon enter the fray followed by atmospheric birdsong effects and rippling arpeggiated synth line that resonate with the 'Dunes at Dawn' title. Rising to a spine-tingling zenith at the mid-point alongside deep, captivating bassline, the second half continues the rich melodic collage creating a sumptuous start to the EP.

Continuing the powerful rhythmic basis of the opener, 'The Stars Above' scintillates with its chugging rhythmic vibe and syncopated bassline pattern. Evolving through subtle percussive urgency, dreamlike pads float across the mid-range beside steam-powered white noise waves, before intricately programmed synth plucks complete the foundations. Before long, undulating arpeggios glitter in delayed patterns as counterpoint phrasing adds emotion and guile to create a contemplative offering.

'Nocturne' completes the musical triptych, revelling in a subtle melodic hypnotism that blends acid-tinged loops with flowing analogue motifs. Panning the stereo spectrum with plucked phrases, a magnificent combination of counterpoint melodies rise and fall across a nine-minute magnum opus that results in another string to Sellares' increasingly powerful bow.

Black Roses Nineteenth EP comes from Erly Tepshi, one of the label founders. In this EP you'll dive into the unknown, fasten your seatbelts for a journey into the space where the light of the stars will bring some brightness in the darkest universe and get lost in a fantasy world. The first track is "Hidden feat. Eleonora", deep grooves with a solid kick and spatial elements surround the unique vocals of Eleonora. The second track is "Seven Deadly Sins", inspired by the homonym anime. In this track the leads will give a sense of redemption. The third track is "Dune" characterised by a strong and dark bassline the plucks will make you feel lost in a desolate desert. The last track is "Pride" in collaboration with Abstraal, in this track the groove from the French duo fits perfectly with the sweet and melancholic harmonies and pads inserted by Tepshi.

Without holding his breath or glancing back, Steyoyoke's newest artist Aaryon steps forward and plunges himself straight into the deep end with his debut EP 'Fairy Tales'. Comprising of two originals, a remix from Ran Salman and two remixes from Animal Picnic, this release is sure to leave its mark.

The title track is a solid first release and a fine introduction of things to come from this artist. Possessing an exotic energy and hypnotic vibe, 'Fairy Tales' is driven by a strong momentum, that dominates and pushes you beneath a surface of beats. Deep bassline kicks and thrumming techno vibes are harmoniously laced with intense melodies that genuinely evoke a sense of fairy tale madness.

Ran Salman is next in line to flavour 'Fairy Tales' with his sound and puts forth an edgier, slightly darker version. The intensity is a little more progressive and a smidge dirtier, but it mirrors that exact same drive and momentum from the original. 

Track number three is the Club Edit from Spanish duo Animal Picnic, who are taking up remix duties with Steyoyoke for the first time. Their interpretation of 'Fairy Tales' seems to have more punch and attitude, which definitely boosts 'Fairy Tales' with an added sense of presence.

Their second remix brings soaring key changes, beautiful transitions and smooth basslines. Layers of deep percussion are infused with broody undertones, creating a beautiful platform of warm rich sounds. 

'Chlorine' is Aaryon's second track on the EP and it bares a harsher, sharper quality, then is heard on any of the other tracks on this release. Laden with sparse synth riffs and a bouncy techno jive, this track is both powerful and commanding. It is also another testament to support Aaryon’s talent and skill.
