De verhalen achter iconische soundtracks krijgen zelden de aandacht die ze verdienen. Daarom zoomt Op de vijfde rij in een nieuw drieluik voor de verandering eens volledig in op filmmuziek. Met als belangrijkste vraag: wat maakt nou een briljante soundtrack?

In deze eerste aflevering spreek Cesar Majorana tijdens de 50ste editie van Film Fest Gent met de componisten van drie van de meest opvallende soundtracks van het laatste decennium: Daniel Pemberton, die met Into the Spider-Verse ons hele idee van wat een superhelden film is veranderde; Volker Bertelmann, die met All Quiet on the Western Front John Williams versloeg voor een Oscar; en Gustavo Santaolalla, die na de prijswinnende soundtracks van Babel en Brokeback Mountain de grootste soundtrack van zijn carrière afleverde, voor de game en serie The Last Of Us.

Wat doet een music supervisor? En welke verhalen schuilen er achter hun werk? In deze tweede aflevering van een drieluik over iconische soundtracks spreekt Cesar Majorana met twee music supervisors over hun werk.

Laura Bell, de voornaamste music supervisor in Nederland, legt uit waarom de komst van streaming voorgoed het gebruik van muziek in Nederlandse films en series heeft veranderd. En de Britse music supervisor Lucy Bright, een grootheid in het vakgebied, vertelt onder meer hoe de onvergetelijke Under Pressure dansscène uit Aftersun tot stand kwam.

Waar is de soundtrack van Spoorloos gebleven? Henny Vrienten componeerde in 1988 een onvergetelijke soundtrack voor George Sluizers thriller Spoorloos. Het is een van de hoogtepunten uit de Nederlandse filmmuziekgeschiedenis, maar de soundtrack werd nooit uitgebracht en ook in het archief van Eye Filmmuseum ligt het niet.
 
In deze slotaflevering van ons drieluik over muziek spreekt Cesar Majorana met bewonderaars van de soundtrack en gaat hij op zoek naar de vermiste tape.

I like the original version by Pantha du Prince soo much, but I always felt like I missed something. My favourite sequence in the tune dropped in very late and I liked to see it featured the way it deserves. 

So here's the RVL treatment of the great tune made by Pantha du Prince. I wanted to change as little as possible to preserve the enchanting vibe of the original track. Enjoy ;-)

Pantha Du Prince - Satellite Snyper (RVL's Face Hugger Floor Range Remix)

An incident during last summer worked as the initial spark for "Spiderbite"; DJ Phoney was working on two songs and left the mic open while taking a shower for inspiration (it was darn hot outside). A spider – hidden in a bathrobe - bit him. The spot on his skin swell and turned red, so he called a medical emergency number and they made fun of him ("Stop on by for an amputation!") since spiders in Germany are harmless. 
(Here's something extra embarrassing: he even kept the dead spider in a matchbox for half an hour – because of a possible antidote, thinking of Jeff Hanneman. haha)

Thus the vocal idea was born and instantly recorded on top of a raw psychy Funk instrumental. 
The outcome sounds like The Vampires Of Dartmoore flirting with a garage Funk act plus a martial arts score or some British library music influence. 

There is also an extremely ltd vinyl 7" available (66 copies only).
