The song speaks to the cyclical aspects of coming into our power. Like the moon, we are in a constant state of becoming and renewing. The blood moon of 2015 brought me to a new phase of becoming. During a time when the world is on fire, how can we tune in to the sacred within to guide us through these changes?

The 2nd to last line is an ode to Octavia Butler, whose writing continues to shape my relationship to self and the world.

Monsoon Winds

On Araw ng mga Patay (Day of the Dead/ All Soul’s Day in the Philippines), I release this offering to our ancestors. This song is an ode to the living, written during a time when I needed to be reminded of what to live for-- seeing my mom live out her dreams in Italy and Paris; moments of deep belonging in the land and waters of Mindanao and the incredible beauty and abundance of the Coast Salish lands (Pacific NW). 

This day is a memorable one. As a child in the Philippines, I remember going to the cemetery and setting up the feast of the dead with my family. Due to trauma and migration, I have a tenuous relationship to my blood lineage. I want to honor where I come from, with all of the skeletons of my ancestors laid bare. Knowing that some of them were complicit in violence and colonization, I can feel that at least one of them is very much rooting for me and our collective liberation. This is an offering for Grandma Hope, for Noory, for Jennifer Laude, for Sun and for Tita Virgie. This is also for my mother, who radiates life, and also my father, who was watching us live our best lives and made his presence known. This is also for us-- trans and queer and nonbinary, black and brown and brilliant and beautiful, who deserve so much more in this world.
