History of the mantra
Karacharana Kritam is the 14th shloka of Adi Shankara's Shiva Aparadha Kshamapana stotram.

The meaning of this stotram literally translates to seeking forgiveness from past ill-deeds.

The mantra was traditionally practiced by Shiva disciples as a daily prayer. They would chant it for hours in deep penance.

Devotees would hold a Rudraksha mala to count the number of repetitions of this prayer.

I seek your blessings, Lord Shiva, may I be forgiven for the sins of my hands, feet, speech, actions, ears, eyes or mind.

Lord Shiva has several forms and avatars. Many of his avtars such as Pashupatinath and Vishwanath and others are very famous. Similarly, Lord Kalabhairav is also a fearest forms of Lord Shiva. This form of Lord Shiva, described by Adi Shankaracharya in the Kalabhairav Ashtakam, is shown to be black, with a garland of skulls and snakes, he has three eyes and holding weapons of destruction in his four hands.
In the Kalabhairava Ashtakam, Adi Shankaracharya praised Lord Kalabhairava as the Lord of Kashi, he actually means the Agya Chakra - signifying total awareness of the present moment. In that Adi Shankaracharya says that even the divine energies, bow down at the feet of Kalabhairava, yearning for that state of bliss and samadhi.
People must chant Kaal Bhairav Ashtakam and it is believed that those who chant it on a daily basis, it brings positive changes in their life and if people can not chant it on a daily basis then they should never miss it on Kalashtami Day which falls every month on Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha. Chanting Kaal Bhairav Ashtakam has a lot of benefits and these benefits are mentioned below

The Kala Bhairav Ashtakam was composed by the great philosopher saint of the 8th century AD Adi Shankara. It has a selection of 8 Slokams hence called a Ashtakam. It is considered highly auspicious to chant Kala Bhairava Ashtakam during Kalashtami day. Kala Bhairava Ashtakam is a stotram on Lord Kala Bhairava. God Kalabhairava is the destructive form of god Shiva. Kalabhairava is also regarded as the guardian of Lord Shiva Temples.

Deva raja sevya mana pavangri pankajam,
Vyala yagna suthra mindu shekaram krupakaram,
Naradadhi yogi vrundha vandhitham digambaram,
Kasika puradhi nadha Kalabhairavam bhaje. 1

Meaning

I salute Kalabhairava, the lord of the city of Kasi,
Whose lotus like feet is being served by Devendra,
Who is merciful and wears the moon on his forehead ,
Who wears a snake as his sacred thread,
Who wears the different directions as his cloth,
And who is worshipped by sages like Narada.

Bhanu koti bhaswaram, bhavabdhi tharakam param,
Neelakanda meepsidartha dayakam trilochanam,
Kalakala mambujaksha maksha soola maksharam,
Kasika puradhi nadha Kalabhairavam bhaje 2

Meaning

I salute Kalabhairava, the lord of the city of Kasi,
Who shines like billions of suns,
Who helps us cross this miserable ocean of life,
Who is supreme and has a blue neck,
Who has three eyes and grants us our desires,
Who is the death to the God of death,
Who has lotus flower like eyes,
Who has the undefeatable trident,
And who does not have decay.

* could also be translated as death to the time.

Soola tanga pasa danda pani madhi karanam,
Syama kaya madhi devamaksharam niramayam,
Bheema vikramam prabhum vichithra thandava priyam,
Kasika puradhi nadha Kalabhairavam bhaje

Meaning

I salute Kalabhairava, the lord of the city of Kasi,
Who has a spear, a chord and a stick as weapons,
Who is black in colour and the primeval cause,
Who is deathless and the first God,
Who is free from decay and ill health,
Who is the Lord who is a great hero,
And who likes the special vigorous thandava*
