Beautiful and calming textures... makes me want to melt into the waters far beyond my reach

ElEkTrAwBoT - Personal Madness

I started by recording a couple of modular feedback patches, with a loose goal of generating steady, slowly animated tones. A Doepfer BBD delay was used as a hub to process a mix of droning pulse waves from two VCOs—the result of which was fed back into the delay. The BBD also outputs CV that corresponds to manually set controls as well as input CV signals, and this was used to modulate other patch parameters in the feedback loop.

The output was split to a crossfader that was sent to a handful of filters and another delay with a long interval—the idea here was to create a bit of slow movement to keep the timbral/spectral qualities in slow motion. 

I stacked a couple of sections of the drones together in Ableton, and layered in parts of a recent recording Tides (in chord mode) being granularly processed with Nebulae v2. This created some mid-higher frequency 'blooms'. Also added some simple granular processing in Ableton that was spread wider in the stereo field. Lastly added in some looped field recordings that introduce some higher frequencies and textures that I wanted to include.

Disquiet Junto Project 0611: Music That Listens to Itself

The Assignment: Record a piece of music that repurposes itself as it proceeds.

Background: On September 29, 2023, there is going to be an event at a place called the Berkeley Alembic, in Berkeley, California, where I’ll play recordings of music that share a specific theme, and I’ll discuss the sounds with the people who come to listen. The event is titled Music That Listens to Itself, part of the Expanded Listening series developed by Erik Davis (Techgnosis, Burning Shore). That is the theme. Part of the goal of this project is to develop tracks for potential inclusion in the event, and to pursue ideas related to the event’s theme.

Step 1: The underlying idea is to produce music that, so to speak, listens to itself. This would be music that employs techniques to revisit itself — repurposes itself — as it proceeds. From reverb to echo to tape loops to granular synthesis to accessing a buffer, various techniques serve such a compositional and performance purpose. Consider a means to achieve this result.

Step 2: Record a piece of music that employs the technique you focused on as a result of Step 1. Please note: for the Berkeley Alembic event, I’ll be sharing music that is particularly quiet, particularly appropriate to a meditative state of mind. You don’t need to record quiet music for this project, but quiet music is what I’ll be playing at the event.

Aphanite

We are living the dawn of artificial intelligence and it's a wave we can't stop. I've been intrigued by this idea throughout the majority of my life, yet I cannot fully express in words the fear I now feel at its gates.

From Hollywood to Japanese animation, the majority of sci-fi infused dystopian atmospheres to this concept..yet all of it felt so far fetched and out of my lifetime; (and although never seemed impossible) at the time felt something exclusively for enjoyment purposes...yet, here we are.

Don't get me wrong, the aesthetic is just right, I will always be entertained by experiencing a vision of some future; something that is an evolution of life at the moment, yet honestly, as much as I'm inspired by it, I cannot help but feel a bit xenophobic on this matter (as a normal 21st century person should feel, I might add..)

Anyways..one particular monument of this theme is 'Ghost In The Shell' (1995) by the genius of Masamune Shirow,
which offers insights on the first instances of silicon-based sentience. 'The Power Of A Shell Is The Power Of Its Ghost' is an ambient piece I've composed inspired by this theme.

While their image remains trapped in glamourous clichés, European cities (Lisbon, Paris, London etc.) undergo post-pandemic capitalist dystopia. Their inhabitants are hindered by the wear and tear of life - unemployment, debt, poverty - while millions are pumped into tourism and foreign investment. This collaborative release by Ryefield Society and James A. McDermid takes its roots in these bittersweet places where beauty is hindered by misery, pollution and/or human contempt."

S’accommoder is a quest for peace and solace in those industrial landscapes. Ryefield Society evokes urban melancholy with acoustic instruments, repetitive melodies and field recordings. Wistful and anxious from its opening track ("A dead world of sunshine and rain" - a title borrowed from the great American writer Richard Wright), this intimate journey finds relief in love and art as narrated in the meditative and organic "A focus on colours".

Perdido - Portuguese for "lost" - considers a tourist's experience of European life: eating pastries alongside the Seine in Paris, or perhaps hearing the echoing voice of the Fado singer along the cobbled side streets of Lisbon - all of it dreamy, beautiful and delightful; yet it's something slowly becoming more and more manufactured as a way to encourage more tourism and more money into the areas slowly being gentrified beyond recognition.

Nicholas Maloney is a sound artist, multi-instrumentalist, performer, and recording engineer from Jackson, Mississippi. He earned his bachelor's degree in Recording Industry Production from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2017.  Working primarily in the areas of drone, ambient, musique concrète, and electroacoustic improvisation, Nicholas creates recordings that he feels can provoke emotion, while at the same time offering a pallet of sound that can be used to practice the rewarding act of deep listening. He looks to challenge the listeners’ focus and perception of sound. Much of his work explores the textural nature of sound within a framework of progressing and evolving compositions. He is interested in the interaction among texture, sound, and space.​
