Unknown Tribe welcomes Anthony Asher-Yates's musical project Bålsam on it's 4th CD release. With "Subtropic Year" Bålsam takes us on a journey to where he has been living for the past 2 years -mountains of Colombia- and his very personal mystical experience he had during the creation of this album

"Subtropic Year , is an album created under the mysterious energy of my first child growing in her mothers womb and the powerful experience of our labor and homebirth.
Many of these songs are composed of field recordings taken from the subtropical region of Valle del cauca, ( Colombia) on the road to the Pacific ocean

"A cloud gathers at the peak of a green mountain,
a living curtain of leaves that could have been a
garland laid to rest upon the brow of the stone
apex, where the clinging arms of roots recede and
give way to progressively whiter stone faces,
pockmarked and stoic, a wisdom of bones.

Beneath the Urth, the hollowed cavity of Hell
wells up, an ironclad chasm full with hot black air,
delivering the profane names of the great thralls
it has called downward, like a long hissing
poisonous tongue, curling into a meaningless
symbol, thrust into the narrowing ceiling of the 
pyramid.

From a great distance apart, lowered eyes
consider the reverberant Urth, and the buried
dead. A hand turns, with an opened palm, and the 
seas reply, enveloping the landscape, reclaiming
its long forgotten inheritance."

"One day, my piano (a nice upright Feurich made in Langlau in 1984) was opened because the hammers had to be repaired.
The strings were visible and the cylinder was removed. 
Like this, the piano looked like a boneless animal with his skin removed. 
Like the Beef Skinned from Soutine, or an anatomic picture from Vesale. 
I started tapping on the strings, on the wood case, scratching the keys and the strings, to bring life back to this carcass. 
It was the beginning of the first track, L’allégorie de la Carcasse.
This album is like a reconquest of the keyboards and a tribute as well. 
Synthesizers, piano, pump organ and even the computer keyboard, are the principal source of the tracks. 
I tried to keep a pleasure of playing, of improvising, in the spirit of jazz music which I love.
I used other instruments and objects, like shakuhachi and turntable.
However, the composition process needs to go back and forth between instruments and computer, analogic and digital, improvisation and editing. 
Sometimes, the computer and the machines makes you do things that you didn’t expect. 
It’s the life of the music and the creation. 
And it’s the dimension that I want to keep with Véhicule: not a dogmatic way of
composing, but just a journey, always surprising, in the sounds.."

It was in the comfort of my home, during the hot summer months of Montreal that I composed this album. True to my process, my minimalist approach arose from limiting my pedal board, switching their positions and recording mundane sounds like the rain falling. I never have expectations in regards to music and I think this allows me to have an honest relationship with it.
