In sound work for films and so on, recording a "room tone" is where you record the space where the action is going to happen, but while nothing is happening. I don't have any personal experience in that world, but I feel like I'm forever interested in music where not much is happening, so 'Room Tones' made me laugh - a collection of recordings that are barely there but still serve a point? I mean, I'm not Steve Roden or anything, but the name clicked. I'm usually looking for double-meanings in an album name and it hardly needs to be said at this point that any music made in the last few years is probably in some way about being tucked away indoors. So tones made in rooms, made for rooms? Sure. 



When I was writing about my last album on Shimmering Moods, 'Recording', I compared music-making to a diary. Two and a half years later, I still really strongly feel that same sense. I don't write with a project or release in mind, usually - if anything I've been working hard on not being too bound by what I've already done - but it still all comes from me and I typically select things for coherence. That seems like something I expect from a diary. Perhaps where the metaphor falls down is that a diary is chronological, while with 'Room Tones' I'm pulling together finished bits and pieces I feel work together. It was 2007 when I made the recording that gives 'Ōokayama Cats At Night' its name, sitting on the back porch of my apartment, waiting for the washing to finish. In contrast, I made 'Tonal Drift' as soon as I recorded the korimako that showed up to make some noise in the garden at my current place. And while most of this music was completed around the same time, one track is maybe five years older than the others.

Handstitched* is thrilled to announce the next installment of the split-artist series, Ian Hawgood and Fields We Found feature alongside each other for an outing of outstanding musical composure and tranquility. 

Ian's music needs little introduction, with many releases and collaborations under his belt on numerous well-known labels - to say he's prolific is pretty close to the mark. Ian also curates the wonderful Home Normal label, here in the UK. "upward eyes" is seriene, slow-moving and hauntingly subtle, prolonged space fills the moments we frequently overlook and leaves time for reflection during a quiet time spent in an open space. We are honoured to have his debut EP "upward eyes" featuring on Handstitched*. 

Fields We Found has just released his outstanding album "Distance" on the lovely Seil Records, which has been on constant rotation here at Handstitched* over the past month - and the new EP "kindred" is equally as moving, graceful and bewitching. The equilibrium and expression within "kindred" is harmonious - and at the same time, quietly sonorous.

Fields We Found and Ian Hawgood are both welcomed to Handstitched* with many thanks and admiration for their respective musical works as part of the split-artist series, it's great to have them visiting Handstitched* for this special release.

Ian Hawgood / Fields We Found - upward eyes/kindred [HS45/T S4mpl3r]

Fossil Hunting Collective is musician and sound artist Jamie Jones, from Guelph in Canada who has been active under this artist name since 2019. He has previously released music on labels such as Ambientologist, ROHS, Polar Seas and Rusted Tone Recordings across this project name and as (ph)authers (alongside Hymns57) and Still Harbours (with Brad Deschamps). Followers of our discography may also recall 2020’s contribution to our Home Diaries series, entitled ‘Aperture’. 

‘Cyanotype’ was made primarily, via the beautiful surprises thrown out of various guitar pedals along with re-amped loops played back through old cassette recorders. Whilst virtual plugins are also used throughout the process, Jones places an emphasis on the physical too, with his small body acoustic guitar strung with nylons, a Jazzmaster guitar, a baritone ukulele and reel to reel tape. The sound is a heady blend of melancholy, nostalgic and life-affirming movements, using droning texture, tape decay and loosely performed instrumentation to tell dreamy stories.

The theme for this album was born out of the emotions that Jones pours into his music, as he contemplates the day-to-day struggles of his daughter Hunter, who has been Type 1 Diabetic for the last two years of their life. This autoimmune disease can be life-threatening if not managed correctly and around 95% of Jones’ headspace is occupied with worry, as follows strict procedures to count carbohydrates, weigh out food and monitor blood sugar metrics to ensure that his daughter does not become hypoglycaemic, which could lead to a coma. Controlling this disease is a full-time job and one which Jones carries the weight of at all times. The worry, care and withered energy levels mean that these emotions surface their way into the music, when he sits down in his studio late at night.

The album is a homage to what Hunter must go through each day of their life, living with Type 1 Diabetes.  No child or parent should have to go through this. No child should need to understand how it all works, but they are forced to wonder ‘why me’.  On top of the weight of the emotional trauma, there is a physical trauma that comes with being injected with devices and life-saving medication numerous times a day, until a cure can be found. Jones and his family are keen to remind themselves when they can, that the disease does not define the being, and they still celebrate all the positive splendour life can offer. These tracks are an emotional journey of the day-to-day; there is the good and the bad, days of hope and wonder, days of melancholy and sadness.  Above all, they are not alone in this fight, and they all work together as a unit, protecting their family bond fiercely, like bees.

At an age of around 18 months, Hunter adopted the nickname ‘B’, after being so enthralled with their bee costume for Halloween that they continued to wear on many occasions afterwards. The track titles for this album are all influenced by bee related terminology but also, in some cases there are double meanings, such as ‘Apiary’ (meaning home), ‘Castes’ (members of the family) ‘Mellitus Propolis’ combines Mellitus (Latin for sweet)) used in describing Diabetes Mellitus and Propolis (the resin that bees use to hold hives together).

The album package makes use of the artist’s wife Richelle Forsey, who is a visual artist. Richelle often employs a process using the energy of the sun (ultra violet) to expose a camera-less image on paper coated with iron salts. This is called a cyanotype and the paper undergoes a chemical reaction which fixes the image, thus creating an imprinted monochrome ‘blueprint’.

"Tender" is an album created using a different approach than my previous works, such as "Dusk to Dawn", "Sui" and "Kotoba". It was created by endlessly carving up various samples, reconstructing them, and reducing the number of sounds as much as possible.

From the finished songs, I felt a tenderness that I had never experienced before. I hope this soundscape will transport you to a place of tenderness.

this is a very similar patch as Untitled VI, except that now there are three voices instead of one: SMR, piston honda (which is also in the rosie efx loop from time to time, which is a bad habit/crutch that i lean on way too often) and e350. SMR is droning and fluttering into clouds, while the piston honda and e350 are both hitting an optomix before going into rings for some reverb. there is also a field recording churning in the background inside the disting, which i am randomly and manually controlling the playback speed on. 

i could listen to this for hours (and did)

These are five untamed field recordings captured between the desolate streets of suburban Treviso in late June 2018. 
Five explorations of the secret language whispered by its houses and by the slow and mysterious movements of its inhabitants exhausted by the summer heat. 

Matter owns a hidden language, a dusty and ancient one. 
Sound is matter. 

Matter is a tactile manifestation of something that is higher, or at least something that lives hidden among the cracks of our everyday life. 

Something vast, which is capable of moving matter and space. 
Something speaking in codes. 

The movements captured in this work are sometimes brusque, sometimes more tired and dragged. 

These are five declarations of love towards a more real world of truth, a world that is hidden but that somehow manifests itself continuously through the familiar sound of objects and everyday life. 

All five recordings are first single takes, recorded on worn out tape rolls found here and there. 

All recordings captured with a rusty Phillips portable tape recorder and a contact mic.
