Maps and Diagrams - Occupying Space

The four tracks that comprise GIVING WATER TO THE DEAD were composed using sound materials originally recorded for the sound installation Histories of the Present, a public artwork commissioned by the City of Berkeley in 2019. But where the installation was about a melding of practices and sounds into a single gesture, Crouch and Novak wanted to take the opportunity of a split release to exploring divergent paths starting from common ground. For GIVING WATER TO THE DEAD, each artist started with the same source material and plotted their own direction without direct influence from the other.  As artists in a relationship and sharing a studio this was no easy feat. Despite the planned divergence the resulting tracks compliment each other, as the artists do.

Handstitched* returns with a new release in the split-artist series - where two artists feature back-to-back on both CD and tape. Offthesky and Soysea meet somewhere in the middle for this amazing release. Both of the artists' music compliment each other very nicely, a perfect pairing of musical minds and sound.

Offthesky makes his second appearance on Handstitched*, after the mesmerising "to break is something sacred" long-player in 2019. Jason's new work "Anatomy of Infinity" features three epic pieces, shrouded in timeworn mystery, far-eastern echoes shine through, glistening and descending through a contrast of discord and awe-inspiring beams of light. 

Soysea makes a welcome appearance on Handtitched* - after hearing his music previously we were excited to get a chance to release "Oriens". Michele's music is nicely-rounded, understated drones and subtle vocals carry the listener through longitudinal divisions, meaningful and with purpose, the music is splendid, soulful and thought-provoking. 

It's amazing to get the chance, once again for another Offthesky release, this time alongside Soysea - the music is simply elegant, and contentment, which Handstitched* is very happy to put proudly out-there. Each format is limited to 50 copies each. The tape release is slid into hand-made, creased, folded and assembled cotton rag O-cards, the CD release comes in hand-made gatefold sleeves with mixed-media collage cover artworks, every design is individual, unique and made by hand.

"'Rituals' is the first solo album by CIRCA ALTO, an electroacoustic set of songs built around clarinet, guitars, pianos, and electronics. Copenhagen-based multi-instrumentalist and composer Mathias Lystbæk is behind CIRCA ALTO, working with cinematic and experimental music in genres such as jazz, classical, and ambient music. He balances composed material with improvisation, relying primarily on acoustic instrumentation. On this record, he is joined by Tom James Scott, who adds piano on tracks three and four, while artist Maja Malmcrona created the accompanying artwork."

"Invierno has (as the title may already suggest) two topics or themes it is mainly influenced by:
The country of Spain and the season of winter. It was recorded in the winter of 2021/22, and
the Spanish influence is founded mainly on the listening-experience of Rodrigo's Concerto de
Aranjuez. I tried to transform the melancholic summer-atmosphere of this beautiful work into
the winter season by using some tiny fragments, granulating them and communicating with
them via my modular synth. The tracks developed in a constant flow.
The Rags of Winter are two pieces created right afterwards in the same atmosphere with the
use of the modular again and a Ciat Lonbarde Sidrax as a second instrument.
I am glad that this album, which is quite dear to me, found a home on the beautiful Rohs
label, and would like to thank Andrea Porcu many times for his care about it."

On November 5, 2022, Daniel Carter and Stefan Christoff improvised together at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Brooklyn, a community space, with strong connections to migrant justice activism, that is also a temporary home for many newly arrived asylum seekers some of whom sat to listen to the musical exchange. 
This session was the first encounter between Carter and Christoff that resulted in musical explorations. Remaining from this session were a couple of audio fragments which Christoff shared with a network of musicians globally who remixed and reimagined them. In Astronomy is the resulting album.

A recording engineer with a career spanning over 20 years in Japan and a bodywork therapist, Nobuya Uchida collaborates with fellow musicians to provide musical accompaniment during his bodywork sessions.

His music first became publicly available under the artist name "Uchida Sound Labo" in 2022.

"Kuus" represents an edited, rearranged, and reconstructed version of his one-hour ambient music series titled "kuu series 1~4."
