A through-composed piece for piano and two voices (either tenor and baritone as on this recording, or - probably preferably - soprano and mezzo) which uses various sections of the Requiem text with the hope of providing a sense of consolation and peace.
(Apologies for the high notes in this homespun recording ... I'm sure better singers would enjoy performing them!)

Alexander Ilyinsky, Berceuse

Stefan Kraft added some beautiful orchestral sounds to Debra's piano piece. Here I used the exactly same vocals as in the previous version with just the piano.

This prelude has an intense dark energy that comes from the Presto tempo and the key of B flat minor; there are some moments of respite, including a few tender, aching phrases just before the end, but largely the mood is one restless momentum, with touches of fury and pain in the mix. The ending is one of defiance.

Watch the ships that slit the oceans

Those liquid roads will soon be gone
as the foam turns back to sea.

And so is life.
For a while I'll make a difference
a sillage that shows the way
for my sons to follow me.

break the waves of violent seas.
They will learn and take my place
when I'm no more than debris.

I love composing; always have done. 
The infinite potential for ways to put notes together is endlessly fascinating, and the capacity for expressing one's own feelings and personality through this process is rich, intimate and very precious to me.  
I write Opera, Oratorio, Orchestral music, Chamber music, Church music and Song. An ongoing project is composing 'Songs without Words' for solo piano; it is a way of trying to articulate my experience of life, its joys and its pains, its hopes and its disappointments.
